Reg Dean

[edit]
  • ... that Britain's oldest living man Reg Dean was an army chaplain in Burma during World War II?

  • Article length passed the minimum requirement. The hook was supported by a reference, and though I believe that the article may be longer, I think its good to go. Arius1998 (talk) 11:36, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
  • Some structural and close paraphrasing issues with the article, which reads like a newspaper article rather than an encyclopedic one; there's far too much trivia and approximating facts. The "oldestinbritain" website does not appear to be a reliable source by Wikipedia definitions. This also needs to be placed in time: "currently" means nothing to the reader, who won't know whether the article was last edited in September 2012 or January 2008. The overly close paraphrasing needs fixing as well: "Good friends, a religion, looking for the best in people not the worst, and being a vegetarian for 30 years" (a direct quote of Dean in the Daily Mirror) is quite close to "was a vegetarian for 30 years and attributes this, in addition to good friends, a religion, and looking for the best in people", and there are other overly close examples from this article. I will be adding more comments to the article talk page later. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:20, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
What's wrong with adding interesting facts to this article? Also, when it comes to lists (like the things that Reg attributes to his longevity), it's very hard not to paraphrase it. I mean, there's only a certain number of ways that you can write a list. Futurist110 (talk) 04:21, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
I think you need to be a bit more selective in those facts and in how you put them together. You also need to be more careful: "was a vegetarian" means he isn't any more, but his quote seems to indicate he still is. It is true that lists limit you in terms of paraphrasing; in this case, since it's a direct quote, why not give it in his own words, even if you leave some of them out? Update: an independent evaluator just rated the article a "Stub" on its talk page. Articles that are considered stubs aren't supposed to be approved for DYK: this may be a confirmation that more work needs to be done. Something to consider. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:06, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
  • Aside from changing "was" to "has been" regarding his vegetarianism on September 26, none of the issues have been addressed. I'm willing to give another 72 hours, but if no action has been taken by then, the article will be rejected, which is too bad, because I looked at one of the referenced videos, and I like Reg Dean a lot. • No further edits, and nominator has been online and editing elsewhere. Does not satisfy DYK requirements. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:17, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
