Archive 10

After a couple of requests and an overlong and bloated talk page had emerged, I finally decided to take it upon myself to do a new archive of everything on the page. Please feel free to start a new discussion. RC Master 16:45, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

New Xbox 360 Hardware article

Since the article was getting rarther long (about 86 KiB, the wiki-media engine suggested a breaking up) I decided to farm off the whole section about Hardware to an article of its own, titled Xbox 360 Hardware. The main article can focus on giving a more general and brief outline, to keep the article short, while the specific hardware article can go into more depth for those who want it. Thoughts? RC Master 17:15, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Since there have been no vocallised thoughts on this in the week since I made the change, I will assume that this is a universally accepted change, and leave the article in place. RC Master 11:09, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Elite UK pricing

The article states that Microsoft anounced a UK retail price along with a European release date for the Elite. However, only the European release date has been announced for now. According to an Engadget article, UK retailers are taking pre-orders at £330, but there is still no official word on the matter from Microsoft. Perhaps someone with an account can edit the article? 82.95.254.30 15:59, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Actually, it looks like it might be £299.99 http://digg.com/xbox_360/Microsoft_Xbox_360_set_for_UK_price_cut_on_Friday_August_24 --Roddie Digital 20:14, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Warranty is still only 1yr

Amended the article, as it says that the warranty is 3yrs. This is untrue, as it's actually 1yr, extended to 3yr ONLY for RROD failures. [1]

Any Xbox 360 customer who experiences a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights will now be covered by a three year warranty from date of purchase. All other existing Xbox 360 warranty policies remain in place.

Please don't revert this edit without discussing.

Just to reinforce... this statement is true, and can be easily proved with Peter Moore's statement. When you read the statement, he says it very vaguely (and people who think they have a full-extended warranty will be upset later if their 360's die a different way then RROD). Anyhow, if you read his statement carefully, he says that its only for errors of the RROD nature. So basically, if you don't get a red ring, you're gonna be buying a new one if it's after a year. Just posted in case anyone disputed this :) WIKIPEEDIO 15:00, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

It is indeed true, The 3 year warraty is ONLY For the 3 red lights and Every other problem is Only covered under the 1 year warranty, Unless you buy an extended warranty. 71.29.175.199 (talk) 19:51, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Another common Fault/Flaw is the system error E74 (one Red Flashing light) which is not covered in the 3 year extended warranty. The current information on Wikipedia is incorrect and misleading and should be changed ASAP. Louis Best 21.01.08

sales

why does the section entitled sales, not actually have any information on xbox 360 sales? all it lists is units shipped, whoopty friggen doo. i know microsoft is only recording untis shipped, but there must be a reputable market research firm that ahs done research on the actual install base of the system... does anyone know of research of this type? and just because i like to repeat myself: from a reputable market research firm... 207.210.20.237 02:31, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

The answer is no - that figure would be an estimate anyway. Can't see what's wrong with 'units shipped' - the figure will represent an upper bound for sales figures - the actual sales figures will lag behind the units shipped figure by a few weeks/months..83.100.183.144 17:59, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Is anyone able to supply some European sales figures? It seems a bit strange that there are stats for the US and Japan, but not Europe. Roddie Digital 08:53, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

The article states that Many of the stats released by Microsoft were unchanged or not updated from July: More than 11.6 million consoles have been sold since launch. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.173.64.14 (talk) 00:21, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

I would like to see this reported "sales" figure changed to "shipped". While Microsoft and its stockholders may be interested in the revenue of units sold to retail chains, the public is most interested in the number of units actually purchased by end users. The figure listed for "sales" is deceptive, making the Xbox 360 appear to be similar in popularity to the Nintendo Wii when this is clearly not the case. I hope that the current protection of this article is legit and not a move to keep this mistake from being corrected.

there is definately a problem. there are more units sold than shipped... i think shipped should say 12.6 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.165.59.39 (talk) 19:47, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

The current sales numbers (consolewars) is inaccurate, at conflicts with all the numbers reported by major news organization, and Microsoft's own quarterly reports numbers. I'd suggest that we avoid using sources like this one for sales numbers, and stick to numbers gathered from places major news organizations and financial reports. -76.22.61.71 09:10, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

To my understanding, the consolewars list is actual consoles sold to the public while the quarterly reports are the ones sold to retailers (shipped). There seems to be several discussions going on in this talk page, but it still doesn't appear clear what needs to be done about it. Chan Yin Keen | Talk 10:33, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Hard drive only games

Some games will need a hard drive and have a hard-drive sticker on them.It looks to me like this is a change - http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=127508 - has this been confirmed?87.102.75.182 18:24, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

If you actually read the article, you would see that it says microsoft is stating that all games will be playable without a harddrive, but that users will not necessarily get the full experience. This has been the mantra all along and has not changed.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 19:05, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
That's not how I read it quote " "But just like some games will require you to have a Memory Unit to save games, some games will require you to have a Hard Drive to experience them."

Is this really a special edition or is it just stickers and a custom faceplate. IMO only 2 doesnt make it worth mentioning otherwise we should add every custom job we see. --Deathtrap3000 22:04, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Move content from the Technical Problems page

Also, according to the same article, Microsoft has reserved enough money for this problem to spend $100,- on every existing xbox 360 to fix it, or enough to replace every third xbox 360 ever made.

I removed that from the technical problems page (as it's not a technical problem). It probably belongs in the Sales section as one reason MS is losing money on the Xbox 360 (or something that hurts their profit margin). 171.71.37.207 19:48, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

You must be joking, its not stated there because of Microsofts "profit margin" but to prove how bad the described problem really is! Thus it's certainly relevant to "a technical problem". Therefore Ill have reverted your edit, which is obviously only inspired by your need to sensor the article to remove all references to the fact that there are obvious signals from several reliable sources that potentially one in three of all Xbox 360's will fail with a "general failure error" in the normal lifespan of the device (the next several years). "Achievement" or Gamerscore Template Proposal

Gears of War
Achievements
on Xbox 360
On the Disc
49 Achievements worth 1000 Gamerscore
Additional Content
8 Achievements worth 250 Gamerscore
[2]

I've been thinking, and I recon it would be valuable to have a small box on each game that has achievements, simply noting the maximum number of gamerscore and how many achievements there are to get those. Its been said before that either listing all the achievements, or talking about them specifically without any outside comment is "unencyclopeic." So how about a simple template that does it? To me they're a big part of the replaiblity of many games on 360 (and soon PC). So it just seems wierd all these pages on games that have them, but only a link, or no mention at all about them.

There could be an "on the disc" section, noting how many are available out of the box, and a "content download" saying how much is available from expansions available online. To me, that seems the simpliest way to do it across all LIVE games. Because it would get very complicated spliting it up into "paid D/L content" or "free D/L content" etc. Some links to specific sites within the template that go into more depth could be useful as well.

So the code might look something like this:

{{achievements
|platforms = [[Xbox 360]]
|discpoints = 1000
|discachieve = 49
|contentpoints = 250
|contentachieve = 8
|url1 = http://www.achieve360points.com/game/gearsofwar/
}}

I don't have the knowledge to do this myself mind, I'm just bringing the idea to the fore, to see if there is interest. And if someone else wouldn't be able to build it. Thoughts? RC Master 12:58, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Update: I've added a quick mock-up at the top right. RC Master 13:38, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Though it's a good idea there is a PROBLEM - many games (not gears obviously) are multiplatform - so adding a xbox 360 specific infobox would probably be 'not fair' or something. That said I think it's a good idea - I think it would be good if the achievements section could be expanded or contracted (hide/show).87.102.4.73 08:19, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
True. Then again, games which appear on PC as well as other consoles often have the entire "system requirements" of the CVG infobox devoted entirely to the PC version. Which ends up quite long in some cases. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (video game) as an example. So a small infobox adding information that, up until now, is completely ignored doesn't seem like a huge problem to me. Perhaps ambiguity could be overcome by putting "achievements on Xbox 360" Or "achivements on Xbox 360 and Windows Live" etc. With an extra "platform" tag to the template. Update: changed mockup to reflect this idea RC Master 13:34, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
ok, fair enough. I definately think the info box is the right place for it. I think Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Templates (talk) would be the next place for you to visit. or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games.87.102.66.173 11:28, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
Yeah that's a good idea, but start off by making it for Xbox 360 games which are exclusive and only run on the Xbox 360 (so far, unlike e.g. Halo & Halo 2 which started only on the Xbox, but then moved onto PC), e.g. Gears of War, Halo 3, Lost Planet, PGR 4, etc. But don't move onto ones that are with other consoles, e.g. Spider-man 3, Harry Potter ^^, etc. - Beautiful so ur (talk) 12:58, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

The HDMI port being included as part of the xBox 360 premium in august 2007 applies (as far as I know) only in the USA (and certainly not in the UK/Europe). No announcement has been made as to when this feature will be included in the European Premium Package.

Lates Xbox 360 Update

Why was this update released in the down low?

There was a new XBOX 360 update that was released through the XBOX Live MarketPlace on August 7. The Update 2.0.5766.0 is suppose to prepare the console for the new wireless instruments that will be released with the upcoming game Rock Band.

Is there a new update that was relased on September 20, 2007? I live in México and today I found it, but I don't know what this update do. Heretic Exodus 21:02, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

yes - most probably using the rca or scart connectors see Xbox_360_Accessories#AV_Connectors_and_Cables - though the best you will be able to see will be 480p.87.102.92.28 20:03, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

not likely europe. The 360 is a US phenomenon they haven't done huge numbers elsewhere. low penetrations in japan. Europe it sell well for a game machine but game machines don't move much there. If you exclude US data (which is a huge exclusion) the 360 comes in 3rd. The main market for it is the US. But it's a huge success int he US. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.75.33.118 (talk) 06:50, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

you sir, are an idiot. total xbox 360 sales minus USA 360 sales is still greater than total ps3 sales, so no, the xbox 360 would not fall to third place if we excluded the US, but it would fall from FIRST to second. the ps3 beats the xbox 360 is japan, and that is it. and it doesn't beat it enough even there to make up for europe. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.165.59.39 (talk) 10:52, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Downloadable content problems with replacement 360's

  • I don't think it was noted in the article already, but I think it should mention how replacement 360 consoles cannot play downloadable content for games (for example the Knights of the Nine expansion for Oblivion) unless the console is connected to the internet. DarthMaul431 19:15, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
Is this true - I assumed that downloaded content would be associated with the xbox live gamertag - once you recover the gamertag - you can use the content ??87.102.2.76 13:18, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
There are some issues with it, but it is technically unclear so its hard to mention in the article. At one point replacement consoles fully lost certain items. Since then it hs been possible to get them restored so long as the original gamertag that downloaded them does so, however depending on the circumstances it appears some require one to be signed on to xbox live, while others require the account just to be on the console to authenticate it. --Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 13:24, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Reading about this it seems that the console is licensed to the user (gamertag) - but is also licensed to the console (serial number) - if the user users a different console they need to be on xbox live to 'get authenticated'
However if the console breaks and is replaced - the new consoles serial does not match..
Looks like microsoft need to have some sort of proceedure for transferring the license (something like register your old xbox as busted - and swap the licence to the new one)
Hopefully they (microsoft drm experts) will sort this out soon.

Question2 - is this problem serious enough to mention on the main page? If it happened to me I'd be quite pissed off...87.102.2.76 13:55, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Primarily... does it have adequate sourcing? Without that it doesn't matter how much of a significant problem it would pose should it be true, or how "pissed off" (I don't really think the language was necessary) someone might be if it were to happen to them.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 17:45, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Sourcing? the facts are real, as for the extent of the problem I don't know how many people would/will be negatively affected. The thing came up on arstechnica.com, beyond that seaching blogs and forums for different combinations of DRM,broken,xbox360,license etc turns up some more articles like the two linked above..
It's a 'princess and the pea' situation though I'm not sure what you mean by 'sourcing' - given that blogs, forums etc probably won't count.???87.102.2.76 18:18, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm sure if its a real problem at least one semi-reliable source like IGN, 1-up, etc. will have some kind of coverage on it. But yes, blogs present a tough one as they don't have any peer-review or editorial oversight, nor do they have any accountability.--Oni Ookami AlfadorTalk|@ 18:53, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
I believe publishers like Ubisoft, associated the game expansion downloads to both the gamertag and the console....but one call to the MS customer service should have this resolved. For XBLA I'm 100% sure it's just associated with the gamertag. As for the gamertag needs to be online in order to play the game, well that's pretty obvious, otherwise what's there to prevent you from sharing it with MILLIONS of people. Kenimaru 10:53, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
According to what I've read, to get the content transfered to another console was difficult via the customer service - and actually required them to refund the points so that the content could be re-downloaded...
There were also issues with homes with multiple consoles - as described in one of the references above.87.102.18.211 12:05, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

homebrew development

The last section 'homebrew developement' is pretty much redundant since currently there isn't really anyway to develop/program on the xbox 360 console itself.. Maybe it should be removed - or is there work afoot to bring more to the console???87.102.2.76 13:59, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, fully homebrew (like, doing whatver you want on 360) is pretty much locked out. but with XNA people can make their own games and play them on 360. perhaps that should be mentioned instead/as well? RC Master 13:17, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Sales info (Aug. 23 2007)

First of all, the article says that 11.6 million units were sold, whereas in the infobox it says 11.6 million were shipped. Its references also say that those numbers are the number of shipped consoles. This new info just released - http://www.vgchartz.com/news/news.php?id=508 - says that the amount of xbox360 consoles sold to consumers (and not to retailers) is actually 10.51 million. The footnote at the bottom of that page says that the companies declare every console shipped to retailers as "sold". Remember, "shipped" doesn't necessarily mean "sold".--Kurotsyn 19:20, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, well 11.6 may not be accurate, bringing Vgchartz into this kind of ruins your point.

7FlushSetzer 20:32, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Meh, I've never even heard of VG Chartz before I saw that article, to tell you the truth. However, I did search around to see if it was a valid/accurate source. It didn't seem invalid to me. What are your reasons for VG Chartz being an invalid source? --Kurotsyn 18:20, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
Their figures are not a accurate count - more of a statistical guess - which could be considered misleading.. At least we can assume that the units shipped figure is true.87.102.84.56 20:51, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
As it's an estimate we would need a margin of error from them, sample size etc etc - it opens a whole can of worms - at the end of the day - is it worth it?87.102.84.56 20:54, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
Nope. We need facts. Let's take VG Chartz as example, they have estimated (or rather, guessed) in July that PS3 outsold Xbox 360, however when NPD released the actual figure, Xbox 360 still outsold PS3. Next Gen War is another personal website that's just full off useless numbers. Kenimaru 03:03, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

What are your points? The main reason everyone's been looking at this months VG Chartz is because it claims the Wii has outsold the 360. Which accurate or not, it's fairly obvious that it has. 24.117.164.51 01:29, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Regardless of whether the particular source is right or a guess, the question itself is a valid one. This is a complete guess on my part, but based on the PS3 infobox (and I am of course assuming it to be accurate), units sold might only be 70-75% of units shipped. If this is the case this is very significant, and in the absense of a reliable source we should not assume that 11.6 million shipped means anywhere near 11.6 million sold. BeL1EveR 16:33, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

So why not just changed "sold" to "shipped" then.83.100.158.113 08:36, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Price list

I've removed the price list from the article, as per the guidelines at WP:DIR#NOT, and also because its mostly unsourced, and also highly susceptible to rapid change.

Oli Filth 08:17, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Succeptibility to rapid change is not a barrier to inclusion on Wikipedia (it's one of the big differences between Wikipedia and paper encyclopedias - the news items on the front page are an example of this), and WP:DIR#NOT makes an exception if the price is notable information in itself - such as in a price war, which is arguably a dimension of the current console war. Breaking down prices by region doesn't obviously help with this, so is probably unencyclopedic, but one could possibly justify it as part of a discussion of sales strategy.
You also make a good point that the list is poorly referenced, so I'd suggest that anyone planning to resurrect the section find good references for prices - ideally official RRPs, not just the best deal you can find on amazon, as well as a good justification for notability of information. James pic 09:28, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Should we at least note the current US$ prices? Seems a bit odd that the launch prices are listed but the current prices are not. --Ray andrew 01:10, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

The key question, as always, is whether that's notable, verifiable information. I would say it probably is, as pricing on the next gen consoles has been discussed at great length in the video game press.
There's also the issue of how to present it in an encyclopedic manner - Wikipedia is not a catalog; I reckon the most appropriate way to include this information is as part of a discussion of market placement - any press article discussing pricing will also discuss how this figures into Microsoft's sales strategy, so if you find a good reference for price, you should be able to reference strategy too. statement about 10mil headstart

"At E3 in May 2006, Bill Gates announced that Microsoft would have a head start of 10 million units by the time Sony and Nintendo enter the market." That was taken from the article, but is it also worth mentioning that despite the headstart Nintendo have now caught up and according to some reports (Financial Times) Nintendo have actually made more sales? I only say this as it would make an interesting follow up to Bill Gates statement in this article about the 10 million unit heardstart. JayKeaton 22:30, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Nintendo is said to have passed them fairly recently. PS3 reports about 1/2 as many shipper and 1/3 as many sold. Based on the current estimate at the end of june. No info on if Halo 3 pushed them back on top yet.206.75.33.118 06:45, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

When you activate the free 30-day trial of xbox live gold, can you add a 12 month subscription code to that? And to first activate the 30 day trial, you dont need a credit card, right? Please someone respond and i will delete it then. Thank You. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brandon boudreaux (talkcontribs) 22:48, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Yes you can. As long as it isn't those two day trials, then you are fine. You can stack up to 3 12-month cards in one profile in one time (meaning the next year you can add another one). You don't really need a credit card; that is only for buying the subscription card on the marketplace. You can buy the pre-paid card at your nearest electronics store. 1yodsyo1 15:12, 25 October 2007 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 1yodsyo1 (talkcontribs)

Sales

The sales that are noted is actually the number of units shipped, not sold. It can be also noted due to the financial times confirming that the wii has overtaken the xbox 360, but on it's wiki page has a lower number of units sold stated, thus making the 360's sales incorrect. Xchiodosx 14:08, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Please remove all mentions of "Pro" and replace with "Premium" then clarify the cable differences outside of the chart.

I don't know why I can't edit the page myself, seeing as how I see no restrictions for unregistered users.

Anyway, there was no such thing, though many retailers have called it such since the beginning. It's just them being sloppy. Many retailers also call the 60GB PS3 "Pro" or "Premium" and it reflects in their computer systems, on shelf tags, and in advertisements.

Also, there is no mention of the Premium model's component cables in the section linked to when you click "Premium" in the contents.

I wanted to see if there was a difference between these and the Halo edition's component cables because Microsoft is supposedly selling the dongle included with the Elite for Halo Edition customers (and those few Premiums out there with HDMI, though those ctainly have optical outputs on their component cables. Any information on the Halo edition's possible cable differences (or similarities) would be appreciated. The chart doesn't even include this model. Are the cables identical? If so, it could really only be for the new Core known as the "Arcade" unit, despite what Microsoft said. That makes it significant because it's more confirmation of the unit's existence!

72.15.79.28 05:00, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

You're wrong. Microsoft has never called the Pro system "Premium", either. In fact, the only refference to either "Premium" or "Pro" is in the latest packaging, which is labeled "Xbox 360: Go Pro". As such it would be most accurate to reffer to it as either the "Xbox 360" (as Microsoft does) or the "Pro" (as most people do, and as microsoft has before). However, since "Premium" is used so often, even by Microsoft PR employees, Wiki would be doing a diservice to its readers for not mentioning it. PyroGamer 18:58, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

SKU

Article misues the acronym SKU. The Xbox 360 Premium, for example, is not one SKU, it has different SKUs in different European countries (different power leads). Halo 3

Just by looking at the people I know I can tell Halo 3 has sold much better than Gears of War... and even with the little information we have so far it is easy to see that Halo 3 has more sales. Just because we can't yet prove it doesn't make it not true. We might as well say gravity doesn't exist because we can't prove it. I don't know if you can actually prove gravity exists or not, I am just saying that facts are facts whether or not they have been proven. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.165.59.39 (talk) 21:25, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

No actual proof... But whoever has an Xbox will know it will be 1# sooner or later. Allen649 00:11, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Halo 3 has infinite sales, beating all other Xbox 360 games combined. 170 million dollars in the US is about 2 million sales (hard to guess with 3 editions) and there is also europe and that should make it about 4 million and then add in other countries (canada, australia, etc) and there is no way it is under 4 million sold (on launch days combined). and then the game has had extra days so now it could easily be at 7 million. definately more than gears though.

There is proof. Gamestop said about 4.5 million copies were at their stores with the added number at other stores. Halo 3 has already sold probably 10 million copies but I'll just put it as the highest brought game.Bizub4 00:24, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

halo 3 could have a 1:1 attach rate... i know people who purchased halo 3 but do not own an xbox 360 (the guy who was first in line at my blockbuster bot legendary edition and doesn't quite have enough money for an xbox 360 and is buying one next pay check. and also xbox 360 console sales could be through the roof from september, so having 10 million sales is possible, with new users and people buying the game without the system. i have heard of people buying 2 or 3 copies of the game, so they can have each edition, or so they can leave collecters or legendary unopened and still have a copy of the game to play). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.165.59.39 (talk) 18:32, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

stating halo3 has probably sold 10 million copies really gets rid of all your credibility. first microsoft stated they sold 170 million copies worth which is a little less then 3million. also halo3 doesn't have a 1:1 attach ratio with the 360 if it did that would of been announced already. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.104.90.230 (talk) 20:56, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

This is the reason why Halo 3 is listed as the top-selling game. The 5.2 million number was an estimate made by Reuters [3] : "which could mean Halo 3 has sold as many as 5.2 million copies." Since it was an estimate, it probably should not have been used as a top-selling game source for Halo 3. See #Halo 3 sales. --Silver Edge 05:00, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

To bad! Halo 3 has more than 5.2 million and last update we had from Gears of War was 4 million after nearly a year. Sorry to say it, but Halo 3 has the proven top sales of any Xbox 360 game. If you can find Gears of War having more than 5.2 million and raising that 1.2 million copies within the last few months then you can change it back. However, it will be pointless seeing as how the sales of the 360 are doubling up simply by the release of Halo 3 and if Gears of War did have more than Halo 3 as of now it won't for long. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Darth Botto (talkcontribs)

So you didn't read the comment above that specifically notes that the source for Halo 3's sales number was an estimate, not a solid number? Until there's solid proof of just how many copies Halo 3 sold, leave it alone. NeoChaosX (talk, walk) 23:55, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
Oh good! You found a source for Gears of War! What is it?
This source here - [4] As you can see, near the bottom it notes that Gears of War has sold over 4 million copies. As of yet, there is no reliable source that says Halo 3 has managed to sell more than approximately 3.7 million units, as seen here: [5], which notes that it has sold 3.7 million copies in the United States. Yes, I know that for some people it must be frustrating that there is no complete, comprehensive, up-to-date figure for all sales, but this *is* an encyclopedia, so only RELIABLE sources can be used, even if they're old. Halo 3 sales

The article that is being used to say that Halo 3 has sold 5.2 million is misleading. They say that Microsoft has announced earlier this year that Halo + Halo 2 has sold 14.8 million units, and now 20 million of all 3 have been sold. It is assuming that Halo1+2 hasn't sold ANYmore since then? I think the "as much as 5.2 million" needs to be fixed with a source that gives an actual number, when those sources are available. I just find it awkward and misleading. There's no doubt that Halo 3 is selling well, but you shouldn't give numbers that are that iffy 'as much as' -LN3000 08:02, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

Personally, I just think the image we have now looks plain bad. But beyound that, it does not accurately represent the product. The Xbox 360 no longer includes a Media Remote, and the grey trim ontop is now flat grey, not matte.

I'd take some pics of my model if I was any good at it or had a green screen, but I can't. I'm sure there's some Wikipedian who could help us out with a freely-liscenced pic. PyroGamer 19:01, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Original Research on planned solutions in Technical problems section?

Referring to this line;

Microsoft moved to the 65 nanometer manufacturing process (from 90 nm) for its Xbox 360 CPU in the autumn of 2007 with its "falcon" motherboard revision. Xbox 360's with the new falcon motherboard are expected to arrive in the shops somewhere in December 2007. This will reduce the amount of heat the console produces, meaning it can run cooler, which might alleviate some hardware issues.

I'm coming from the History of consoles section attempting to clear up some citation issues, and one of them involves the 65nm manufacturing process of the CPU. The history of consoles article mentions that the 65nm CPU should clear up things like the RROD and what not. What I'd like to know is whether anyone has found any news articles specifically mentioning that it might alleviate the hardware issues? As it is it feels like OR as I can't find anything that even mentions the possibility. Chan Yin Keen | Talk 05:25, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Units sold sales table needs to be removed

The second sales table about units sold really needs to be removed and the first table about units shipped should be renamed to units sold. There are a few good reasons for this. The first being that the citation for the current units sold table is a little sketchy. It states a number that is .4 million less than a widely accepted number that was from july 2007 while it also says that it includes numbers from september. This really does not make sense, how could sales have gone down from july? The second reason it should be removed is because it is very redundant. As it was explained to me very clearly over at Talk: History of video game consoles (seventh generation), sales is the same thing as shipped when information comes from company financial statements. I would have a hard time explaining it all so here is the comment that explained why sales is shipped:

In a company statement sold usually means to distributors or large retail chains, it does not indicate sell through to consumer. Due to things like price drops many times sold does not actually indicate that the manufacturer has even been paid for the product (this is why when a price drop occurs retailers don't generally lose the difference in price, they simply take the dropped price off of what they owe the manufacturer based on their remaining inventory). In the case of using financial statements, sold means shipped not sold to consumers. I'm going to edit my explanation a little further to clarify. Here is an example of when sales don't mean sales but shipped. In a company statement shortly after the launch of the Ngage Nokia announced that they had sold 400,000 units. Their definition of sold meant they were available to purchase in retail channels the actual number sold to consumers was shockingly low (under 20,000 worldwide at that point). MysteriousMystery 3:40, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

The source seems to use financial statements to some degree as it says. It is hard to be sure exactly how the numbers were compiled since all that I can view is a translated version that is disjointed and the fact that the person says he used numbers from many different sources which he could have mixed and matched as he saw fit. For all of this the second table needs to be removed and the first needs to be renamed.--Kyle(talk) 05:30, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

i live in singapore and i am getting an elite for somebody for xmas. it has already been purchased and i was looking on the outside, it says "go big" but no where does it say anything about being bundled with a game. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.156.66.110 (talk) 08:52, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

i had a look on www.xbox.com.sg and the other two models come with games but not the elite, so the article should be changed to make clear that not all countries have this on their elites. and on a side note does anyone know why there is no built in wi-fi on the elite because that is really dodgy the elite should come with everything. 202.156.66.110 (talk) 12:28, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Backwards Compatibility

Should be 465, not 395

Who did this, and what do you possibly mean? Luigi6138 (talk) 22:26, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Can I use Xbox Classic games on the Xbox 360? --Jay Turner (talk) 18:33, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes, most (465?) of them. Luigi6138 (talk) 21:10, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
So I can put a Xbox classic disc in and it will work? --Jay Turner (talk) 17:19, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
If it is one of the 465 or so... Check List of Xbox games compatible with Xbox 360 to see if your game will work. Luigi6138 (talk) 22:18, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Well, actually the answer is sometimes no! If your Xbox is -not- connected to the internet (as is also needed for Xbox Live),and a needed "emulation profile" for the particular game you want to run was not available at the time of manufacture of the Xbox and so is not on it's hard disk already, then it is not as simple as is suggested above. You can read about the reason for this in List of Xbox games compatible with Xbox 360#How compatibility is achieved. Simply putting in a old Xbox game will not work if your Xbox 360 does not have the profile on its hard disk and is not connected to the internet, because it will then not be able to automatically download the needed "Profile". In that case you need to download this "profile" on your PC, and burn it to a CD, (or get it trough another source, such as a games magazine) to get a game to work. In actuality this "profile" just amounts to a "tweak", or even an addition to the built in emulator, to change it specifically for the game you want to play. This also means that you -have- to have a hard disk to store these emulator patches, and for other "household" items need by the game. Mahjongg (talk) 23:30, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
You can use a memory unit too. All you must be able to do is CONNECT TO XBOX LIVE, and have a SILVER (or Gold) membership. Luigi6138 (talk) 00:02, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
When I stuck in a disk it said I needed an Xbox 360 HD. --JayTur1 (Contribs) 21:24, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately I dont see how this relates to the article anymore... this is not Microsoft tech support... this doesn't relate to the article anymore. While I feel for you not being able to get your system to work but there are other places on the internet to get that information. (Fighting Zucchini (talk) 21:52, 4 February 2008 (UTC))
This information might be construed as aiding in the bettering of the article, as a hint that the section "backward compatibility" needs a reference to the fact that for backwards compatibility to work a hard-disk or memory stick is needed, plus a connection to xbox live. Possibly misleading statement

When I read the section on "Multimedia," I thought it meant that the 360 supports Divx movies as of the Fall, 2007 update. However, xbox.com only lists the Fall update as adding support for .mpeg4-asp files. Although Divx uses mpeg4 part 2 compression, this update did not add the capability to play .divx files. I am removing the comment that mentions .divx because it implies a feature that the 360 does not have. Thingg (talk) 01:52, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Xbox 360 Elite photo replace

I have a better picture of the the Xbox 360 Elite console that might provide a better view for users but cannot replace it due to the protection so if some user who can bypass the protection to put it up there, if they could please take a look and if it seems to be a better picture, replace the two pictures if you could, thank you. Done - it may need to be scaled better but as a thumbnail it's good for now until the copyright thing runs out - Beautiful so ur (talk) 12:33, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Done - it may need futher editing to be placed in the right place or for spelling errors but anyway, done. (At the end of the section Xbox LIVE Video Marketplace) - Beautiful so ur (talk) 12:21, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

XBL Users in the UK can also access the Video marketplace now, A friend of mine in the UK told me this. He seemed excited about it. 71.29.175.199 (talk) 19:48, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Yeah I know, but (depending on what you're talking about, e.g.films) the XBL Video Marketplace has always been available in the UK. Only after 10th December it was available to get HD films here. Trailers, etc. have always been available. - Beautiful so ur (talk) 16:13, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

XBL Silver members cannot access video chat

I have a friend on XBL Who has a Silver account and a camera and my friend Cannot use video chat Or send pictures, So that statement in the article should be Removed because it is Not true.

12/17/07

I always thought i could myself, i mean it wasn't blocked to silver members at all with me, i could go on MSN but i didn't have the Xbox 360 camera so I couldn't video chat. Having a 'friend' isn't the most reliable source, no offence, it's like no proof. For now it shall be kept - Beautiful so ur (talk) 16:15, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Sales Chart is Misleading

The slaes chart indicates the number of consoles SHIPPED not sold. This is misleading because it's very likely Microsoft has not sold all their xbox 360's. Please clarify.201.242.195.132 (talk) 18:28, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

That is how all of the consols -even other products- count sales this has been dealt with in the past.(58.109.31.47 (talk) 01:26, 19 December 2007 (UTC))

Mention Xbox Live in lead?

I noticed that the lead has a sentence mentioning Xbox Live and frankly, I think it is out of place there. I mean, we're talking about how the Xbox 360 was developed, and suddenly "It's Xbox live service...." and after that, it's like And now back to our regularly scheduled program... "The Xbox 360 competes with...." Also, neither the PS3 or the Wii mention their respective online services in their leads. (potential comparable sentences for the PS3 and Wii: PS3: It's PlayStation Network service allows users to download content such as game demos, arcade games, PS1 games, movie, game, and Blu-ray Disc trailers, and add-on game content. Wii: Its WiiConnect24 service allows users to download software updates for their consoles and classic games for the NES, SNES, TG-16, and other old consoles.) Regardless, I feel that both of these would be out of place, and I feel the sentence in this article should be moved out of the lead. (Actually, reading the lead reminded me of some exercises in my 5th grade English textbook where you had to find the off-topic sentence in a paragraph...) If you guys disagree, its not a big deal to me, but I thought I should ask here before I just move it. Thingg (talk) 03:14, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

actually to me it seems to fit perfectly into place, you see the its just stating some basic info about it and doesnt go out of place because it never really goes into more detail until it gets to its own section in the article Storms15 (talk) 06:47, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
