Cantonese and Minnan Pronunciations[edit]

Don't really understand why the non-ambiguity of these pronunciations is mentioned for a province where these dialects are not spoken 104.35.33.10 (talk) 08:54, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Title shouldn't have tone marks[edit]

I think it's not a good idea to move an article to pinyin with tones, cause no other articles are named this way. And it's harder to find them.

I think it is OK。
You must either use the third tone mark or just spell it correctly in PinYin. Both provinces are spelled Shan Xi but 'Sha an Xi' is pronounced Shan third tone and Xi first tone. Shan Xi is pronounced both first tone. You should not add a vowel since this is not 'proper' PinYin. Personally, I don't care and it allows the English speaker to more easily differentiate the two. It is not proper usage of Pin Yin. There is no just thing as Sha an Xi province. The PinYin word Shaan Xi has three monosyllables.

I don't care what is decided but it is confusing to those who speak both Mandarin and English and to those from China.

If it is embedded in the culture already then we can disregard my comments.Jobberone (talk) 06:30, 21 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As a result[edit]

During the Mongol rule in the thirteenth century, Shaanxi became a provincial unit. In the ensuing years, wars and famine had decimated and depopulated the province. As a result, large populations of Muslims, or Hui people, emerged, as evident today.

Umm. That “As a result” makes no sense. Decimation and depopulation is neither necessary nor sufficient for conversion to Islam, or indeed to any religion. Changing. 89.62.106.137 21:49, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Feudal Dynasties[edit]

I know that in China, most history books refer imperial era of China as Feudal dynasties. But it is a little bit too Marxist. Actually, it may not even be Marxist since it was Guo Moruo who came up with this term. Personally, I don't think Feudal is the correct word here. --128.122.52.204 (talk) 23:30, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Provinces without Pinyin Romanization[edit]

The article asserts that

This makes "Shaanxi" the only name of Chinese provinces that has not been romanized according to pinyin rules.

but Inner Mongolia is officially named "Nei Mongol" and not "Nei Menggu". Hence, Shaanxi is not the only such province.DependableSkeleton (talk) 12:07, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Inner Mongolia is not a province, but an autonomous region. —Xiaoyu: 聊天 (T) 贡献 (C) 15:52, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In other words, a province. ;) — LlywelynII 13:01, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am writing to report a link on the Shaanxi page that needs correcting:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaanxi

The link is in the section on TOURISM.

Here is the link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulou_and_Zhonglou

The article discusses things to see in Shaanxi, but this link is to bell towers in Beijing. I think the link is supposed to be to some bell towers in Xi'an. Thank you. SFSUSU.

Gwoyeu Romatzyh-based spelling[edit]

[copied from wikt:Talk:Shaanxi]

Is there a source for this claim? It seems that Sin Wenz also uses two a's: Shaansi. Suzukaze-c (talk) 23:50, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"landlocked," PRC?....[edit]

The first sentence of the intro had emphasized that this province was "landlocked." While technically true, this strikes me as rather odd to emphasize in the first sentence of the intro of an article about a sub-national entity. The [Colorado]] article, for example, doesn't mention the state lacking a coastline, and I don't believe any of the articles on US states mention it in their first sentence. Being "landlocked" is more relevant for sovereign independent states than subdivisions thereof. The article's text had also specifically described it as part of "the People's Republic of China," even though the common name, and indeed to location of the relevant Wiki article is simply "China." So I've changed this as well. -2003:CA:872F:268C:F4D1:7329:A842:E715 (talk) 12:56, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
