I see that Sgt. Peppers by The Beatles is under Downloadable content, but the reference doesn't say anything about The Beatles. Is this false info or what? Compatibility Chart

Split soundtrack into its own article?

As the soundtrack continues to grow with DLC, and as the release date approaches, it seems that we should follow the lead of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and split the soundtrack into its own article for the sake of brevity. I've added the appropriate template to the article, but I'd like to build consensus before making the move. Thoughts? Oren0 22:21, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

That was done AFTER the release of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock to help ease the need to check 2 different articles for vandalism and non-verifiable information being added. Sure the list will grow (especially with downloadable content), but until the game is released, it is alot easier to kept the main article and soundtrack together. lightsup55 22:27, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

I'm gonna have to agree with lightsup, I didn't like this move with either of the previous guitar hero games and having the chance to fight it now, I will. I think this might be okay after the game is released, but until then (even though all songs have been announced) it is a convienience for people looking for game info to not have to redirect to another article for pertinent information. It's not uncommon for people interested in music games to check out the set list prior to release. It is easier to get a sense of the game as a whole with everything kept in one article. After the game is released, then it will be more appropriate to move the set list to another page where it will not be seen as easily. Also, there may be a tier listing or the like that, unlike GH3, there's been no word how it splits out. It only makes sense to break out to a list of songs when we know how those songs are presented to the user to make the article as useful as possible. --MASEM 14:08, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
The tiering system has been released (see IGN's video preview) and it's complicated enough that I anticipate we won't delve into it at all for fear of WP:GAMEGUIDE. In a nutshell, there are cities with set lists, some of which are just lists of songs, some are local bands, some are secret, and some are single songs. Set lists/cities don't necessarily have to be done in a specific order, and they're a problem for us because songs are repeated in several set lists. I think it would be overkill to list every song that's in every set list in every city. The only real distinction I anticipate we'll make is between regular and bonus songs, but we do that already. I still don't get the argument about people visiting the article to see the list of songs, because they'll do that after the game is released as well. But since there's consensus against splitting for now I'll remove the split tag from the article. Oren0 18:00, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

As I posted in a recent discussion section, I think the information in this news release warrants a split. There's more information about the downloadable content now than needs to be in the main article, and it'd be nice if it was in its own article rather than not on Wikipedia at all. I don't understand why you would need to wait until the game is released to split the information... if the information is bulky enough that it deserves to stand on its own in an article, then that should be that. Is it possible/permissible to split the main article into smaller pieces. All of the paragraphs in this article are a little lengthy. I am suggesting an article for the playlist, a seperate article for the DLC, and an article for each of the different peripherials. As the article reads now it is just too thorough. I like to feel like I'm seeing a lot of real estate when browsing.

No, this is not a good idea. While we do use Summary style to break larger articles into smaller ones, the breaks have to leave articles that should stand on their own. The soundtrack itself qualifies, but the other parts you suggest really don't work out well: an article for each instrument is way overkill, and even a separate article for the instruments would make them lose their context from the main article as well as having the main article lose something. DLC and other soundtrack aspects are explained in more detail on the songlist page, but these are just summary points. The development seciton, now that the game is out, is where some trimming can be done, as we don't have to talk about such-and-such news prior to release, and now can focus that on what was known as the game got closer to release. --MASEM 06:34, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Now that GameSpot has revealed the pricing structure and release dates of the downloadable content tracks, there's a lot of relevant information that would just look like overkill in the main article. Drums and Mic

no one has said anything about the mic and drums being compatable with PS3, Xbox, PS2, and the computer verion. will you have to buy one for all the versions or will one work for all?Krazy lover boy09 14:29, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

The microphones are just standard USB mics that should work on any platform. The drums probably will not be compatible across multiple platforms, since each has a custom joypad in the middle and each is mapped to different buttons for gameplay purposes (it's the same way the guitar works). The Xbox 360 Guitar is not wireless

In the table its says wireless but i thought they said the guitar was wired for the xbox 360 version.

I don't have a source, but I did play the demo at my local Best Buy. Just like Guitar Hero, there is a Quick Play option so that you can play by yourself. However, the Quick Play option in Rock Band allows you play a song by yourself using any instrument (guitar, drums, or microphone). Possible Shortages

Saw an article this morning from home about Best Buy shortages - some people showed up at midnight to get nothing. It was on "Addict3d" I believe. I can't access the site from here at work though to send the link. I also don't know if that type of thing is Encyclopeidic or not. A note though: I tried to find more and this and noticed GameStop said pre-orders will be filled, but no other sales until 2008. Also, there seems to be some sort of alliance that has formed with EA and GameStop...maybe leaving Best Buy in the dust with very few copies of this game...and maybe future games? Just a geeky conspiracy theory, wanted to get this info out in case it's relevant. The reason for the so-called "shortages" are as thus: Harmonix was playing the market. By which I mean, they released few units of Rock Band. By releasing few units, they could drive up demand, and at the same time, see how well their units sell and see how much they can('t) cash in. If the release is a success then they will have regretted not releasing more units, but if few of the special editions are sold, then they would not have lost quite as much money upon release. After all, you're selling this 30-pound box for $170... if it doesn't sell well and you sent out a lot of units, there'd be no chance at a Rock Band 2... or any future endeavors by Harmonix for that matter. It is only 10:00 AM (at least in the East Coast of the U.S. that is). Besides, Wikipedia is NOT a forum or message board. If you are looking for a forum or message board, go to RockBand.com and click "Community" OR the Rock Band forums on ScoreHero.com.
Oh and "released date" just doesn't sound right to me for some reason. Just worry about whether or not the article say something like "Rock Band is a future game to be released..." or anything else that is future tense, which I believe has already been done by someone else.

Is Rock Band keysounded?

It's clear that the game features the master tracks. However, what is the format of the instrumentation? How are the songs tracked per instrument? Are the songs keysounded? Did the game move away from the Stepmania-like format, and fall more into the Beatmania style?

I know that way back when, it was one of those things on Red Octane/Harmonix's to-do list to implement keysounding. And since Harmonix finally picked up master recordings, did they go ahead and keysound the songs? Broken Accessories

I think there needs to be a paragraph in the criticisms section about cheaply made/easily breakable the peripherals are. There are tons of complaints about the guitars having broken strum bars and clunky buttons, while many people are having clunky/broken drum pads and their kick pedals are breaking in half. There are tons of people who are reporting demo guitars (you know, like the ones the put out for people to try the games at Wal-Mart and similar stores) that are broken and Best Buy has had to send many of them back.

There are also complaints about the fact that the Guitar Hero III controllers don't work for the PS3 version of the game, even though many reviewers said that they would be (although this might be a result of the fact that the XBox 360 versions do). Harmonix released a statement about this being Activision's fault because Guitar Hero III controllers don't comply with open standards like the Rock Band controllers do, and the fact that Rock Band controllers don't work on Guitar Hero III is because Activision specifically designed the game to only detect Guitar Hero III controllers. While this is certainly Activision's right to do so, it should be noted that this is a PS3 only problem as Microsoft requires all companies to use open standards and so these issues are nonexistent for XBox 360 users.

This is really important because there will not be individually sold guitars (or any other peripheral) until February, which means PS3 users will not be able to play with a full four players unless they buy two bundle packs.

There have also been complaints relating to the fact that Bands must chose a Leader that must play in every performance, causing problems with users wanting to continue progress after their bandmate has become otherwise occupied.

And finally, there have also been complaints about the fact that while playing in the Solo Tour mode or while playing Band World Tour without a full line up, the computer creates a random character to fill the role, rather than selecting (or allowing users to select) from the list of already created player characters. This has been criticized because often the computer makes a player that "just doesn't fit in" with the rest of the band, i.e. the players have created classic rockers but the computer members are punks or glam rockers, etc. Grant.alpaugh (talk) 11:10, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Most of these are complaints I have seen (the issue of the PS3 GH3 Controller not working is already cited under the peripherals section) but likely because yesterday was a holiday, there haven't been any major news reports that confirm what is only seen in forums, so we can't add those other details yet. I say add a part about the strum bars losing their effect due to heavy playing (happened to mine just yesterday), but the rest of the stuff that Grant stated has not been addressed by the public yet (sounds OR/his own opinion to me). Blacklist (talk) 19:35, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

I personally have had issues with the drums - songs like "Run to the Hills" have fast 16th notes and although I play the parts perfectly, trying both rolls and single sticking, the pads will NOT register a lot of the notes. I tried messing with lag to no avail. I had this issue on two different sets of the game on two different home theaters. Thanks for the reply!! I don't want to make this a mini-forum thread...but basically I've tried playing ultra hard all the way down to ultra soft...like pianissimo and fortissimo and everywhere in between. Playing ultra soft actually registers more of the notes. The encyclopedic note here is that there is a lot of talk on the XBOX.com forums about this issue with the drums not registering all of the notes, as well as the strum bar issue and the foot pedal breaking. I think the peripherals are just not uber-durable and there's a ton of types of hardcore players in the real world that they didn't take into account when testing. It's kind of sad that my drumsticks get more bounce off of my kitchen table than the drum pads. If I find any news articles on the peripheral issues I'll post here. I think we've done good on keeping this article up to high quality throughout the pre-release stages and followups - refs are formatted and look appropriate. "Music controller standard"

There is a lot of talk about the "Music controller standard" Harmonix utilizes in their hardware and software to make all Guitar Hero guitars compatible with RockBand, but not vice versa. What is this standard? Where can I find info about that standard?

An "open controller standard" refers to controllers mapping buttons in the same exact way (every controller uses ABXY the same way, etc). I don't know where you are getting the idea of cross-console compatibility, but controllers are pretty much specific to the console they were made for (and this is the way it has always been). Ignoring that it says March 6th, not March 8th, the site lists "An EA insider has confirmed to RewiredMind.com" as the source. That's a rumor at best.

Rock Band → Rock Band (video game) — WP:PRECISION recommends "adding a parenthetical (bracketed) disambiguator to the page name: for instance when both spellings are often or easily confused."   • Support Who actually cares about correctness of caps and lowercase letters when they use the search box? I certainly use all lowercase, which can prove to be problematic. I think it is extremely misleading and incorrect to rely on the capitalization of one letter to redirect to the correct article, when you could simply put a label at the end of the article title (i.e. (video game) ) to clarify what the article is about. Metacritics

Games #3-7 all have the same score. They are then sub-ranked alphabetically. Technically, they are all 3rd. And any score below 94 immmediately starts at 8th place..... which is why I said tied for 3rd. Y2kcrazyjoker4 (talk) 18:35, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

  • I think the stolen Rock Band copies should be included somewhere in the article, as it isn't every day that some thieves ambush a truck and steal all of the copies of the game.
