Standard[edit]

I've just created Wikipedia:WikiProject Telescopes, maybe observatories should follow same standard? --zandperl 17:58, 16 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Of course, not all observatories are astronomical. Some are meteorological. Cutler 21:39, 16 Feb 2004 (UTC)

types of observatories[edit]

Most of this article described one type of observatory --> astronomical, and that was scattered around the article. I consolidated it into one section and deleted redundant content or moved it into the sub headings. "Observatories still in use" seemed to contain redundant information so integrated and deleted. There was some info on Volcano observatories slightly expanded. The intro lists "Astronomy, astrology, climatology, geology, meteorology, oceanography and volcanology as disciplines for which observatories have been constructed". Looks like there could be 5 more headings for the 5 highlighted. Mr Floating IP 69.72.93.208 04:13, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An Observatory is an organization, not a location[edit]

It seems that an Observatory represents an organization more than a particular location. At least in Astronomy, you can find examples of observatories spread between different locations (e.g. the Gemini Observatory with two telescopes and two headquarters), or examples of locations with telescopes from many observatories (e.g. the Mauna Kea Observatories which unfortunately currently redirect to Mauna Kea Observatory). there is, one hopes, a List of observatories?Skookum1 (talk) 16:26, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
also they need not be assumed to be astronomical in nature; one I can think of is meteorological (Gonzales Observatory in Victoria, British Columbia).Skookum1 (talk) 16:27, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation needed?[edit]

There is at least one place in the world named "Observatory" (in Cape Town). Maybe a disambiguation page would be in order.....Captainbeefart 14:52, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added a {{for}} at the top. better? Modest Genius talk 14:52, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
that's not sufficient, there's Observatory Building, there's Observatory Inlet, variants on Observatory Circle (e.g. Observatory Circle Mounds, Observatory Circle (neighborhood), Observatory Circle, Washington, D.C., etc....I'm about to make the inlet, which is an important geographic item in my parts. Would someone else please make up a proper disambiguation for all, including the two "The Observatory" entries?Skookum1 (talk) 16:24, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Disambiguation is really not needed for partial title matches (wp:dab). 70.208.22.78 (talk) 05:21, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Misuse of sources[edit]

A request for comments has been filed concerning the conduct of Jagged 85 (talk · contribs). Jagged 85 is one of the main contributors to Wikipedia (over 67,000 edits, he's ranked 198 in the number of edits), and practically all of his edits have to do with Islamic science, technology and philosophy. This editor has persistently misused sources here over several years. This editor's contributions are always well provided with citations, but examination of these sources often reveals either a blatant misrepresentation of those sources or a selective interpretation, going beyond any reasonable interpretation of the authors' intent. I searched the page history, and found 20 edits by Jagged 85. Tobby72 (talk) 19:26, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's an old and archived RfC. The point is still valid though, and his contribs need to be doublechecked. Tobby72 (talk) 20:51, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Observatory, Greenwich[edit]

Is there reason why the Royal Observatory, Greenwich does not have a photo on this page? I mean it is a big part of observatory history. John W. Nicholson (talk) 03:17, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
