Footy Show[edit]

I question how they could possibly have appeared on the Footy Show on the 18th of May when it is still only the 15th...

Time Line[edit]

FIRST PARAGRAPH: but Beaconsfield mine collapse occurred on April 25, 2006 in Beaconsfield, Tasmania, Australia. Of the 14 people who were in the mine at the time, 11 escaped immediately following the collapse, one was killed, and the remaining two were found after five days nearly a kilometre below the surface. These two miners were freed on Tuesday May 9, 14 days after they were first trapped."

I don't understand the wording in the first paragraph of the article. There were 14 miners involved, of which 11 escaped. That leaves 3, one of which sadly died, leaving the two that were trapped. In the second sentence it says that the "remaining two were found after five days" meaning they were trapped for five days after the eleven immediately escaped, however, the last sentence says they were trapped for fourteen days.

From what I have read, the figure is fourteen days, so how can they have been "found after five days?"

BlueKangaroo 00:01, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE: I see now they were found using a remote controlled device. Maybe this paragraph could be clearer. BlueKangaroo 00:03, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Guinness World Records?[edit]

Does anyone know what the longest time is that anyone has survived being trapped underground? rossnixon 03:10, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've been wondering that myself.--Drat (Talk) 07:23, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See Wunder von Lengede. But I don't know how long the guys have been in there at Beaconsfield. Lukas 03:18, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Today (Monday 8 May) is day 13 at Beaconsfield if my calculations are correct. -- I@ntalk 03:47, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • In the Courrières mine disaster in France in 1906, a group of 13 survivors were rescued 20 days after the explosion (survived by eating a horse!). I'm unsure if that's a record though. -- I@ntalk 03:44, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
According to that article, another survivor was found 4 days after the other 13!--Drat (Talk) 07:08, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seismic Event?[edit]

What is the most common Australian English term for "seismic event"? I find the term "seismic event" to be somewhat inorganic.--ttogreh 00:12, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Earthquake. --Scott Davis Talk 00:15, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure that this was an earthquake as at least I normally understand it though. The earth movement is related to mining activity. From the Sydney Morning Herald of 26 April "The rock fall followed a 2.1 magnitude seismic event which geophysicists said was almost certainly caused by activities at the mine." We wouldn't normally call that an earthquake or would we?--A Y Arktos\talk 00:33, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In the New Zealand media the collapse has been generally attributed to an earthquake. Not to say this is correct, but just giving our take on things. From everything I heard the earthquake was not mine-related but I may be wrong. PageantUpdater 00:37, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This article in the Hobart Mercury from 28 April also implies that the seismic event was mining related.--A Y Arktos\talk 01:06, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If it's any authority (???), Channels 7 and 9 this morning (Tuesday 9th 11am, shortly after rescue) on Melbourne TV have stated that it was NOT an earthquake - just instability due to the mining itself.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 144.132.10.58 (talkcontribs) 11:16, 9 May 2006 (UTC+ 10 hours)

Perhaps, "a shift in the earth" or something a little less wordy? "Seismic event" is just so dry...--ttogreh 21:12, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

For the record, I logged on to this page at 11.07am AEST (Tasmanian local time) to find all of the information removed and replaced with the slogan "WIKIPEDIA IS COMMUNISM!" and a hammer and sickle. Don't you love how idiots have a problem with the idea of info for the people by the people? Anyway, I rectified this by simply copying all of the info on the edit page and pasting it back in. I've also saved a copy just in case our loser has any more bright ideas. Hope this helps if you see any more rubbish that needs fixing.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 144.132.10.58 (talkcontribs) 11:13, 9 May 2006 (UTC+ 10 hours)

This article is today linked from the In the news section of the Main page, increasing both visibility, and vandalism. Such is life. The vandal referred to above has since been permanently blocked from editing. I've got the article on my watchlist, as I suspect other admins have, just in case any further vandalism attempts occur. -- Longhair 03:24, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That vandal is one of the (if not the) most prolific vandals on Wikipedia. Best to just revert the vandalism and ignore the pleb. Remy B 06:17, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tense[edit]

Some of the sentences have yet to be switched to past tense, but i figure that the people working on this will do this as the final timeline comes about. I don't have the specific info to know whether what was planned acutally happened. Just a reminder. Samadam 03:14, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I had in mind to do a rewrite in a week or two after things settle down. Likely still to happen:
  • media blitz from the two men
  • a government enqury
  • determination on the future of the mine
  • Bill Shorten to run for Prime Minister (sorry, I couldn't help myself)
I@ntalk 03:39, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another route?[edit]

Is there any more information on this "other route" they mentioned: "Mr Gill also yesterday confirmed that a rescuer - acting on his own initiative - had gone close to the trapped pair nine days ago by taking another route." [1] --Astrokey44 06:53, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thats interesting. I haven't seen that reported anywhere previously. - I@ntalk 08:36, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I heard it on the tv last night but only found that one result on google news --Astrokey44 11:51, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just found [2] and [3]. Perhaps this route is where the tube went through? --Astrokey44 12:07, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It was in the Telegraph today, if you can believe that august institution. - Ta bu shi da yu 13:31, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What I heard was that when they were blasting the second tunnel and heard the men, one of the rescuers managed to make navigate and make contact through a section of the rubble.--cj | talk 12:10, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Essentially the other route was through the tunnel where the rockfall occurred (and where voice contact was first made with the miners). Apparently this was considered unsafe and so a new tunnel was dug below the trapped miners and rescue was made. I wonder whether the rescuers believe in hindsight that this other route (a few metres) would have been preferable. The ensuring safety on the other route would have taken time, but given the time taken in the chosen route (due to the unexpected hardness of the rock) this might have actually been quicker.--203.108.164.237 01:26, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hindsight is a wonderful thing! -- I@ntalk 07:04, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Current Event tag[edit]

Now that the miners have been rescued and the "operation" is over, should the current event tag be removed? --JOK3R 16:15, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think so. Remy B 16:41, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was about to take it down, but then noticed it still listed as the top line article on the Main page In the News section. -- Longhair 17:18, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the current event tag since the event (the resuce anyway) is now almost a week old. -- Longhair 03:51, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IPods[edit]

The news link (13) that is referenced for the miners getting IPods does not include the additional detail that the Foo Fighters were loaded onto the iPods received by the miners. I have not heard that on any newscast, though the fact that both men (not just one, as the article says) were fans of country music was mentioned often on NPR and other newscasts. I think the detail about the Foo Fighters being on the iPods intended for the miners needs to be deleted unless another reference can be found that specifically says this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.101.103.133 (talkcontribs)

Brant Webb was into rock music. Todd Russell was the country music fan. Both requested different music. And you cannot assume that Foo Fighters was the only music on Brant's iPod.Kransky 00:14, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • To my knowledge, nobody has assumed that the only music was the Foo Fighters, but to make it clear I have amended the text to say "included", rather than "with".--A Y Arktos\talk 01:59, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Foo Fighters new album[edit]

This is rather interesting... THE NEW Foo fighters album has a song on it dedicated to the miners..and so i assume it was likely they were on the iPods... see [4]. "Ballad Of The Beaconsfield Miners"

include in section on the main page?

Map[edit]

Is there no better map than the one at the top of the article? Only in the hi-res is it clear enough (and the average reader may not bother going that far). It would be good if there could be a closer version of the top part of Tasmania showing Beaconsfield with an inset showing its location as per the whole island. PageantUpdater 19:45, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's a bit busy, isn't it. I'll try and do one tonight: a plain map with an inset of northern Tasmania showing the location of the town. --Canley 03:30, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vehicle name[edit]

Where did "Interchangable Tool Carrier(IT)" come from? it gets only 2 results on google. Most sites reported the vehicle as being a telehandler or teleloader ("a 7m-long Merlot telehandler" [5] ), which I think is Telescopic Handler. --Astrokey44 04:54, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Interchangeable Tool Carrier is the "thing" that's used by vertical aircrafts to board passengers from what I have heard iThink4u 15:50, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The acronym is used completely without expansion at the end of the third para. Can someone who definitely knows what it means please expand it appropriately? Ta --Huge Bananas 01:41, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The 'IT' refers to Integrated Toolcarrier which is a common piece of equipment used in the mining industry. Caterpillar are the most common producer and essentially they are a loader with forks on the front - a more robust forklift. A telehandler is a lower profile version that can extend it's boom to get higher up into the backs (roof) of the drives. The correct full name is Telescopic Handler but this is shortened to telehandler. The newspaper article has misspelt the manufacturers name - it is 'merlo'. I haven't heard that the piece of equipment was an IT, I've only heard mentions of the telehandler. Also from the news reports on TV you can see telehandlers being used on the surface at the mine, so there must be a good probability that they are used underground.--Ctbolt 06:54, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've changed it from 'IT' to telehandler.--Ctbolt 07:04, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Need to work quickly[edit]

All of you who are watching this page... we need to work quickly to verify all of the references from the recent news coverage of the events while they still appear in the results from Google News. I am currently working my way through all the references that appear on the page and trying to make the story accurate. It is important that we keep to what we have sourced rather than our memories. Happy editing all! MyNameIsNotBob 11:10, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It shouldn't be too much of a problem if they do expire, as a Factiva search for "beaconsfield" from the day of the collapse to today should turn up everything that was written on the subject in any newspaper in Australia, and that'll be around permanently. Rebecca 08:02, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And of course there's always Google's cache... -- PageantUpdater 08:09, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Most newspapers keep the old links to their articles now dont they? Ive seen stories from CNN for 1997 [6] --Astrokey44 10:41, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Fairfax websites tend to keep their articles, but a lot of the news.com.au sites drop articles after a few weeks with some remark about copyright — possibly only articles they bought from overseas. --Scott Davis Talk 08:13, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great Escape referneces[edit]

So who knows how to fix the references to the Great Escape special that aired yesterday? Right now they're all pointing at each other. --Susurrus 01:37, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, fixed that now. --bainer (talk) 05:01, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Failed GA[edit]

I failed for a couple of reasons, there is a significant list of to do items still listed on this page. Also the this is a still a warm current event and there is still significant details being released. I notice that a number of redundancies have been offered to workers at the mine, not mentioned in the article. Brant and Todd are currently in the US doing the talk show things not mentioned in article. Gnangarra 15:48, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Brant and Todd's Excellent Adventure[edit]

As amusing as it is, I'm not sure that link to the "Brant & Todd's Excellent Adventure" mock-up movie poster belongs on this as a serious article. The statement that is "a mock-up movie poster was released" implies some sort of official status and that's obviously not the case. I'm going to remove it from the article. --Canley 08:39, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Expired Links[edit]

Many of the links to stories in News Ltd publications have expired. This happens with News Ltd stuff on a regular basis. I'd suggest that in future such relevant information is perhaps quoted and sourced in the body of the story so the information is preserved.
