Page layout years

There is a discussion on my talk page on page layout.

For most of the last three hundred years there is inconsistency and duplication between the year in topic paragraph, the "see also" box and what is on the year by topic pages. Prior to 1950 I am pretty convinced we can painlessly (except for sore fingers) delete all of the year in topic paragraphs and ensure that the material goes into a "see also" box, creating such a box where none exists. Post 1950, particularly from the "year in US television" link a lot of material has been added to this paragraph as highlights (sometimes making up most of the page content pointed at).

Personally I think we should still delete the paragraph, keep the box linking to the topic sites and move any particularly important parts of the year in topic paragraph to the main chronological list. This does involve undoing quite a bit of work which someone has done.

Therefore, unlike for prior to 1950 (where I've said no objection= I do it) for post 1950 I won't touch these pages unless a significant number of people agree with the change. (I am also unlikely to get the pre 1950 stuff done before summer unless the service speed improves dramatically). talk--BozMo 13:50, 7 May 2004 (UTC)

Using birth year

Should we include the birth year after the name under 'Deaths'? I don't think we should but if we do it should be consistent. Tkessler 03:27, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)

In the Deaths section of all year articles, it is standard practice for the birth year to be after the name of the deceased. Best name (talk) 01:21, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Notable?

The current version includes this phrase:

'October 24 - Arthur Hutchinson kills three members of Laitner family and rape their daughter in the Sheffield suburb of Dore.'

Is there really a notable enough event to list in the month's timeline for 1983? Hutchinson doesn't even have his own wiki page. I will remove it unless there are objections. Tkessler 16:58, Apr 4, 2005 (UTC)

December 24 - Cold temperatures break December records throughout U.S. east of Rockies. Sioux Falls, SD low temperature -23F with 60 mph winds. Avg. temp for December in Twin Cities was 3.5 degrees from another source. S.F. high temp on the 24th: -13F. Yea, memorably cold. What about people who are looking for the Jimi Hendrix track 1983 (A Merman I should Turn To Be)? Should a link to the Electric Ladyland album be included at the top of the page?

Annoyed about people adding their birthday?

To whoever verifies the content of this page, do you get annoyed when people edit the page to add their birthday or do you just delete the entry and it's not a big deal? Autonomous communities of Spain

In the article we can read: "March 1 – The Balearic Islands and Madrid become Autonomous communities of Spain.". In fact this is not correct. In that date was approved, so entered into force, the "Estatuto de la Comunidad de Madrid". An "Estatuto", in Spain, is law similar to a country constitution but with lower range than Spanish Constitution. In fact, all Autonomous Comunities already existed before their "Estatuto de autonomía" approvals. DC Williams

Arthur Rubin recently removed Donald Cary Williams from the deaths section on the basis that he isn't important enough. I reverted, he's reverted back, so I ought to provide some explanation of why I disagree with the removal of the late Professor Williams from this listing of deaths.

Within philosophy, I would assert that Williams is important. He named a current and growing field of inquiry—trope theory—and made seminal contributions to the discussion thereof. In philosophy, naming and demarcating a problem is quite important—it makes the problem distinct and expands our ability to think about it as an independent problem. His work has been cited by pretty much everyone who works on tropes or the problem of universals, including philosophers like David Malet Armstrong (Australian), Keith Campbell (also Australian), Fraser McBride (British), David Lewis (American) and J.P. Moreland (American), to pick a few random examples from my memory. While this is of limited interest to many, within the philosophical sub-field of metaphysics, his work is regarded as having been novel, important and significant.

I'd also argue that if we are to engage in nitpicking over some kind of notability or importance test on year listings like this, we probably ought to have some kind of more detailed and consensus-based standard that can be applied before stuff gets summarily removed. —Tom Morris (talk) 07:24, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Well, there is a stated consensus that a person needs to have international importance (which you seem to have justified, but which I haven't checked), and an implied consensus that the Wikipedia article needs to be better than a stub, which hasn't happened yet. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 22:18, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Collage

Error?

It says with no citation that 1983 was the year of the first mobile cellular phone call. But 1973 says, with citation, that the first handheld mobile phone call was made by Martin Cooper of Motorola in New York City on April 3, 1973.
