This article was nominated for deletion on 24 February 2008. The result of the discussion was keep.

World Literature[edit]

The page (and most of the other decades in literature pages) make no reference to being specifically about English language literature, yet not a single novel of the 70s was written in another language: in teh 70s alone where are Garcia Marquez. Peter Handke, Gunter Grass, Michel Tourier, Marguerite Duras, Kenzaburō Ōe… the list goes on and on… this is a staggering piece of provincilism unless this whole series of nested articles is retitled English Language Literature — Preceding unsigned comment added by Terribleman (talk • contribs) 23:05, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WP:OR[edit]

Pretty much sums it up. The Afd vote was keep but there's no way this article meets Wikipedia guidelines nor is it ever likely to unless it were about literary criticism of the 1970's. As it stands now it's just an essay and unreferenced laundry list of (mostly) American books written in the 1970's.Awotter (talk) 05:28, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bravo[edit]

This is the first and only article of this type on Wikipedia. Such articles are common in the real world (surveys of literature on a period basis) but Wikipedia's technicalities make it nearly impossible to pass the sniff test. About the only way to approach it would be to collect 4 or 5 surveys and then amalgamate them together - but then it's still POV because it's a limited selection of opinions. At some point Wikipedia has to live with the fact that art criticism is all opinion, yet it is also established non-controversial common knowledge. Some people have a problem with that dichotomy. Categories[edit]

The main sections this article seems to classifying the major works of the decade into either fiction or nonfiction. However, many of the books themselves are either misplaced or mislabeled, constantly reference nonfiction work in the fiction section, and vice versa.

Someone with the knowledge of the works themselves, as well as the time to do so, may want to order the works into their correct sections.Shint (talk) 08:05, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article's title[edit]

I understand this may cause "global problems" with similarly titled articles in Wikipedia, but the title "1970s in literature" is misleading: I, and I suspect other readers, may come to this article expecting portrayals of the 1970s in literature, whereas in fact it is (and surely should be titled) "Literature in the 1970s", or alternatively "1970s Literature" (which is how this article is linked, for example, from here). Any other thoughts? Or should we consider moving this under a new title? Alfietucker (talk) 14:06, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
