Numbering?

[edit]

Is William the Pious also known as William III, possibly through the County of Auvergne, rather than the Duchy of Aquitaine? On the list of Counts of Auvergne, he is listed as sometimes being known as William III and in a brief mention in The Oxford History of Christian Worship, he is referred to as William III (he is only mentioned once in connection with the founding of Cluniac monasticism). If someone could clear this up, I would be very appreciative.204.52.215.69 17:27, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In a dictionnary article concerning Cluny [1], the main bestower and prima benefactor of the abbey is refered to as William III of the County of Mâcon and of the Duchy of Aquitaine. This is rather confusing. Why is he refered to as William III by some and William I by others ? From which source(s) does this misunderstanding comes from ? I'd also like some clarification. --132.203.171.13 (talk) 21:17, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
