Rationale for deletion of disambiguation page[edit]

Per the WP:Disambig page, "If only a primary topic and one other topic require disambiguation, then disambiguation links are sufficient, and a disambiguation page is unnecessary." Since the radio station call letters are the primary identification and the acronym for a role-playing game set in the Warhammer Fantasy setting is a secondary identification, a hat note is sufficient and requires no more steps than would a disambiguation page for people seeking the game. - Dravecky (talk) 07:14, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so I didn't have this page on watch and didn't see this before now. First, the so-called rationale given above is a confused mess:

That WP:Disambig quote concerns whether to have a full disambiguation page or just a hatnote. It does in no way say how a certain topic is designed the "primary" one, and in fact goes on to say "However if there are two topics for a term but neither is considered the primary topic, then a disambiguation page is used." The "Is there a primary topic?" section on the other hand suggests a few ways to test whether a topic is a good primary topic. Then, it goes on to say "If there is extended discussion about which article truly is the primary topic, that may be a sign that there is in fact no primary topic...".

So, the claim the radio station is the primary subject for WFRP and that the role-playing game is not, is your claim, and is in no way automatically backed up by Wikipedia policy. And it is this claim of yours that I contest.

So, lets check those tests. And then we'll see if there's any "extended discussion"!

Incoming wikilinks: They're all for the radio station.
Wikipedia article traffic statistics: I don't even know what to look at here. (I see the page has been visited, but not what the visitor expected to find?)
Google searches: The top 10 is exclusively for the role-playing game.

In other words, no clear consensus. Thus I propose that this change is reversed, that "WFRP" is considered to have no primary topic, and that a visitor looking for the role-playing game no longer is given a page on a local american radio station.

Oppose: WFRP is the primary identification for the radio station. That is to say, there is no alternate name for this station or this article. WFRP is merely one of two possible abbreviations for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay so WFRP is a secondary identification for this article. Popularity is only a secondary consideration in this calculation as any user entering "WFRP" to find the defunct role playing game would have to make an additional click whether this was a disambiguation page or the radio station article. Having the radio station article at WFRP, its proper name, decreases overall user "surprise" and eliminates extra clicks for the users seeking the radio station and is a wash for the RPG article seekers. - Dravecky (talk) 21:05, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WFRP → WFRP (FM) – I want to create a proper disambiguation page for this topic, including the game, the radio station, the USDA multi-peril crop insurance product, and possibly the Wildlife, Fish, and Rare Plants Monitoring Report, the Worchester Family Research Project and the Warm Fire Recovery Project as well. Support Disambig: Since WFRP Radio is a direct simulcast with no local programming, it is not notable under WP:NMEDIA. I recommend creating the disambig page and when you mention WFRP, direct readers to Family Radio, the parent network (and owner) of WFRP. - Neutralhomer • Talk • 13:33 on May 26, 2017 (UTC)

Support: If nothing else, a Family Radio station that has only been on the air for 12 years and serves a small market seems unlikely, at least to me, to qualify as a primary topic the way a larger, more-established station might, so if the need for a disambiguation page exists, this article should be moved to accommodate that. (The notability of WFRP radio is a separate issue altogether.) Granted, it seems some of the proposed entries don't appear to have articles at the moment, but I'm not sure how much of an issue that actually is. --WCQuidditch ☎ ✎ 02:06, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation >> Redirect and notability of WFRP-FM[edit]

This is written after the successful move of the radio station away from WFRP, which is now back to being a disambiguation page. My original plan was to extend that disambig with at least one more topic so it no longer falls foul of the "If only a primary topic and one other topic require disambiguation, then disambiguation links are sufficient, and a disambiguation page is unnecessary." clause of the DISAMB policy.

However, during the Requested move 26 May 2017 discussion above, somebody brought up the possibility of non-notability of this article. What I think I'll do pending developments in that area is instead to boldly replace the disambig with a redir to the role-playing game, and have it hatnote to here. If the community later decides this page's notability doesn't warrant a full article, the redirection is at least already done. If the community doesn't object to this, we agree the primary topic of "WFRP" is definitely the rpg. Thanks CapnZapp (talk) 23:38, 18 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
