[edit]I'm undoing 2 edits that put USA as A1 prematurely. It is still possible for Italy (although very unlikely) to be first if they win their next game and USA lose theirs (both with extremely big difference in the points). We will most likely have to put USA back in A1 after the next games, but not just yet... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alpha-Toxic (talk • contribs) 20:23, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
--- I had to revert this again. Please people, can't you wait a few hours until this gets official? it is not 100% certain yet that USA will be A1. Alpha-Toxic (talk) 22:45, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Quarter-finals
[edit]I just noticed that the quarter-finals section is wrong. It is not certain that A2 will play against B3 and B2 against A3. Those matches are chosen at random between A2,A3,B2 and B3 and there is even chance for 2 teams from the seam group to play in the Q-finals. I don't know what format to use for that part, so I will not touch it for now... Alpha-Toxic (talk) 20:34, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Just want to give a quick thanks Alpha-Toxic for fixing my ratio mistype. Also, when will we know when the A2/A3 seedings are? Navie05 (talk) 16:17, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- unfortunately I have no idea Alpha-Toxic (talk) 16:26, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

- Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's indoor tournament
- Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's indoor tournament
- Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's beach tournament
- Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's beach tournament
- Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament squads → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's indoor team rosters
- Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's volleyball team squads → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's indoor team rosters
- Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's team squads → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's beach team rosters

– "Volleyball" in the Olympic context seems to refer to both volleyball in general, and indoor volleyball specifically. I think we need to clarify this, and create a uniform pattern for the names of these articles. Since both indoor and beach volleyball are covered in Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics article, and the sports are basically the same, the prefix bit should be uniform, hence this proposal. When this issue is decided, we can go on with the older Olympics tournaments, which follow neither of the above name patterns. HandsomeFella (talk) 06:51, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
Support
[edit]Oppose
[edit]- Oppose; in common usage, the indoor game played with nine players on a side is "volleyball", and the outdoor game played with two players on a side is "beach volleyball". I do not support moving "beach" to near the end of the titles. Powers T 12:03, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Other
[edit]An alternative could be this:
- Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament
- Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament
- Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament → Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament
- Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament → Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament
- Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament squads → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's team rosters
- Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's volleyball team squads → Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's team rosters
- Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's team squads → Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's team rosters
- Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's team squads → Beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's team rosters
in which case the first four pages would not have to be moved.
Since "indoor" is not part of the page names for the indoor variants, and the name thus could be interpreted in a general sense, this solution would require a link from the top of the indoor pages to the beach pages, like this:or something similar. Or does anyone have a better suggestion?

- What is the advantage of using "roster" over "squad"? Powers T 15:31, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
- I don't know if there is a big difference. If there is, it's subtle, and possibly this: the roster is the list of team members, while the squad is the team itself.
- Moreover, there are other pages with this name pattern in wikipedia, see for example Ice hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics – Men's team rosters and Water polo at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's team rosters.

Possible snag
[edit]I knew there was a snag that I had stumbled across. This is cut and pasted from Brazil's participation in the 2008 games. How do we best present this if we keep the beach volleyball pages where they are?
Maybe like this:
It says "Beach volleyball" in the 3rd column, but the link still leads to "Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics", which is the generic page for both indoor and beach volleyball, and the rows don't sort together. But I guess it could still be acceptable.
