Birthyear

Veronica's death certificate at findadeath.com lists her birthyear as 1922. Wikipedia, as well as IMDB list the year as 1919. So, my question : can a legal document contain false information? Which is the correct year? — Hotwine8 03:35, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

She is listed on the 1930 Census in Brooklyn, New York as being 7 years old; therefore, she was born in 1922. — Stutzey 21:35, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

A death certificate is a legal document as to facts pertaining to the death, not to the birth. As a genealogist I frequently come across death certificates containing incorrect information about the date of birth. However, in the case of Veronica Lake's death certificate, it appears to have her correct year of birth: 1922. — Walloon 14:19, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

The first sentence of the bio says: Veronica Lake was born .... on November 22, 1919, and not 1919 as some biographies have previously stated. It is clear this is a typo. I suggest changing "not 1919" to "not 1922". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.191.176.194 (talk) 02:51, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Veronica was born in 1922, and not in 1919. The 1930 Census supports her birth year, her death certificate show 1919 as her birth year, and even her mother stated in the 1983 biography that she had to add on 3 years to Veronica's age so that she could get work in Hollywood. Hence, she was a minor. In her obituary, it says that she added on three years so that she could get work. On the 1920 Census, her father is SINGLE and living in Pennsylvania. What more information does one need? Her parents were married in 1921 too. It says that on the 1930 Census that they have been married for 9 years. stutzey23:07, 1 June 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stutzey (talkcontribs)

1930 U.S. Census

The information about Veronica Lake in the 1930 U.S. Census is already in the endnotes to the article. I have also included the name of her mother (Veronica) in the body of the article. — Walloon 16:53, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

I am a genealogist myself. — Stutzey 14:46, 8 August 2006) (UTC)

Someone keeps putting 1919 back in the sentence so that made it a typo. It was correct before all the changes. Stutzey (talk) 23:09, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Who keeps deleting her son, Michael De Toth from the article? His birth IS Andre Anthony Michael De Toth, because it is mentioned in the book Peekaboo, and it is listed in the California Birth Index. Those are facts people! Stutzey (talk)stutzey —Preceding undated comment was added at 16:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

The link to "The Hour Before Dawn" leads to a 2000 music album, not the '40s movie.

I created the album page with no idea that there even was a movie of the same name. I only found out when I looked at the "what links here" for the album. I'll change the link and see if I can figure out how to put a disambig at the top of the album page.  — AnnaKucsma   (Talk to me!) 15:20, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

50 or 53 when she died?

There is some uncertainty as to her birthdate, alright; but there is inconsistency in the article where, by the dates in the beginning and the chart, it is said that she died at 50, and later, on the section of her final days it is stated that she was 53. Someone must correct this and give a uniform age, or explain the uncertainty over her age and birthdate. Nazroon 06:29, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Veronica was born in 1922, because on the 1920 Census for Pennsylvania her parents are not even married yet. Therefore, 1922 is her correct birth year. Her 1973 obituary states that she was born in 1922, because she had to lie about her age and say that her birth year was 1919 because she was a minor during that time and she would not be able to work in Hollywood. It states that in a biography about her when her mother was interviewed. stutzeyStutzey (talk) 23:54, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Every now and then, someone comes to this article and changes Lake's year of birth from 1922 to the erroneous 1919. The IMDb continues to carry 1919, which probably leads to the tampering here. — Walloon (talk) 06:26, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Imdb.com is incorrect. Someone is going to have to get a copy of Lake's birth certificate to prove the site is wrong if that is possible. StutzeyStutzey (talk) 20:52, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Trivia Section

Would it be possible to incorporate this line from the trivia section: She reportedly worked as a waitress in a White Coffee Pot restaurant in Baltimore during the early 1960s.

into this paragraph: A reporter found her working as a barmaid at the all women's Martha Washington Hotel in Manhattan...In 1966, she had a brief stint as a TV hostess in Baltimore, Maryland, along with a largely ignored film role in Footsteps in the Snow.

===Trivia=== (Moved from Main Article)

  • She was of Danish and Irish descent.
  • She was reportedly only 4 feet 11 inches (1.50 m) tall (although some accounts place her height two or three inches higher). According to Celebrity Sleuth magazine, Lake said her "measurements" were 33C - 21 1/2 - 33 1/2.
  • She learned to fly in 1946 and piloted her small plane from Los Angeles to New York in 1948.

A comment on this: I saw that this page was added to the "female aviators" group, and wondered why. Seems like it should be either mentioned in the article that she was a pilot, or she should be removed from this group? To me, "aviator" implies that it was more than just a dalliance for her. Unclevinny (talk) 15:52, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

She had her license and was capable of long distance solo flights. This makes her a "Female aviator" in my book. I've added this to the article with a reference.--Phyllis1753 (talk) 16:43, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
  • She appeared as herself in Variety Girl (1947), Duffy's Tavern (1945), Up in Arms (1944) (uncredited, in pin-up photo), Star Spangled Rhythm ("Sweater, Sarong & Peekaboo Bang" number) (1942), The Eyes Have It (1942), and Hold Back the Dawn (1941).

Danish?

Something doesn't add up here. According to IMDB her father was Danish but according to the article he wasn't. Assuming that we are more accurate than IMDB she should be removed the category of Danish-Americans. EconomicsGuy (talk) 09:19, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Disregard that. I'm an idiot who didn't read the footnote properly. I'll just go stand in the corner now... EconomicsGuy (talk) 05:51, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Don't feel bad. After reading your first post earlier today, I checked the U.S. Census records of Veronica Lake's parents, and then added the footnote and changed the article text. I also corrected her year of birth from 1919 to 1922. — Walloon (talk) 05:55, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Earlier census records list Lake's paternal grandfather as German (see the 1910 U.S. Census, for example). Perhaps they started listing "Denmark" instead of "Germany" on Censuses after anti-German sentiment during WWI. Lake's paternal grandmother is listed as Irish on all censuses, though. Death in Montreal/Montpelier?

This is an intriguing story, especially in light of its singularity. Is the one source provided sufficient for it to be presented as truth? I find it a bit fantastic and therefore a little troubling, sort of like the similar story about John Barrymore's body. Not to say it isn't true, but a blog seems a little iffy as a sole source. Thoughts? Monkeyzpop (talk) 04:23, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Lake did NOT die in Montreal, at least not without huge cover up. Even the sourcing blog here notes that, "Every biography of Lake reports she died in Burlington, VT". Well, that's because, she did. He death certificate is on file there as is the funeral home where her body was held. Montpielier is 45 miles to the south of Burlington, and 100 miles south of Montreal, so why drive it there? There is very little in Montpielier. A death in Montreal is unlikely. 166.217.106.229 (talk) 07:22, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Crappy Sourcing

For the record Lenburg, Jeff (2007). Peekaboo: The Story of Veronica Lake is a horrible poorly researched book. The stuff on wikipedia seems okay; but the problem with that book is he relied heavily on her mother as a source. Veronica hated her mother, and quit speaking to her in the early 40s. Her mother was the typical scary crazy stage mother, and she even had the gall to sue Veronica who was about to give birth to her last child because she had stopped 'support payments'. Veronica was heavily in debt at the time because of her husband's spending and a lack of films.

A copy of Veronica The Autobiography of Veronica Lake by Veronica Lake is probably the best source at the moment. Frankly a new biography is long overdue. Other than that I'd recommend newspaper articles and census info. But frankly Im not going to research for Wikipedia. That's someone else's job.--75.51.184.65 (talk) 09:19, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Peekaboo

Although the phrase "Peekaboo hairstyle" seems synonymous with Veronica Lake, I think it should be explained. Certailny, when I googled the phrase, a good 70% of the results were related to Lake in some way or another--TimothyJacobson (talk) 20:01, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Pictures

She is indelibly associated with the "peekabo" hair style, and yet neither of the pictures with the article shows it. Find and add an appropriate picture? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.21.65.42 (talk) 15:17, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Totally agree. Not having such a picture is ridiculous. 173.21.54.229 (talk) 14:24, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

I'm moving the "in popular culture" section to here as it is completely unreferenced and contains some speculative and non-notable entries. I think we'd be better off with a Legacy section that discussed Lake's cultural impact in prose.

  • Elvis Costello's song "Veronica" is arguably about Veronica Lake. The lyrics refer to her name, pinup status, and final days of poor health.
  • Barry Smolin's song "Veronica Lake" is about a sighting of a homeless Veronica Lake at Union Station in Los Angeles.
  • The Archie Comics character Veronica Lodge was partially named after Veronica Lake, who was in the midst of her early celebrity when the comic book character was introduced in the spring of 1942.
  • In 1997, the Academy Award-winning film L.A. Confidential paid homage to Lake's image and manner through Kim Basinger's starring role in an adaptation of James Ellroy's crime novel set in early 1950s Los Angeles. Basinger won an Oscar for her performance, which required her to deliberately resemble Lake. A scene included an image of Lake from This Gun for Hire screening in the background.
  • Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit was modeled on Veronica Lake and Rita Hayworth. Jessica also sports Lake's trademark peekaboo hairstyle.
  • The character of Ronnie Lake in the hit CBS drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is named after her.
  • Her character in Sullivan's Travels inspired "Miss Lake," a song on London-based French songwriter Louis Philippe's 2007 album, An Unknown Spring.
  • Billy Wilder's comedy The Major and the Minor has a scene in which the students of a girl's school - and their headmistress - all have peekaboo hairstyles. The boys in the scene mention "The girls at the school have an epidemic...They all think they're Veronica Lake".
  • In Alfred Hitchcock's suspense film Shadow of a Doubt (1943), the young daughter named Ann says her prayers before going to sleep... "God bless Mama, Papa, Captain Midnight, Veronica Lake, and the President of the United States."
  • Hellacopters recorded a tribute song called "Veronica Lake" on their latest album, Head Off! The song was originally written by the New Bomb Turks.
  • The spider in Bob Clampett's cartoon Eatin' on the Cuff puts on a Veronica Lake wig.
  • The Bugs Bunny cartoon A-Lad-In His Lamp features a lake called Veronica Lake.
  • Clips of Veronica Lake were used in Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, a 1982 spoof of film noir starring Steve Martin.
  • In the 2009 video game Still Life 2, a sequel to the 2005 game, Veronica Lake is the favourite actress of the game's villain. He is obsessed with her movies, especially The Blue Dahlia.

Mental illness?

The lede claims that Lake's career declined due to mental illness and alcoholism. The latter is referenced again later in the article, with references, but I can no further mention of mental problems or any reference for it. This should be sourced or removed. I was going to fix the dead link to "Out of This World (1945 film)" in the "Later career" section when I discovered the entire article is under extended confirmed protection for "biographies of living people." Veronica Lake is not a living person. I have been editing for 10 years but don't have 500 edits so I can't contribute anything to this article. I think the protection should at least be downgraded to "pending changes protection" or whatever status would allow people to make useful contributions.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Cantanchorus (talkcontribs) 20:25, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Death certificate available.

Constance Ockelman / Veronica Lake's death certificate is available to see at the FamilySearch.org website operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Death certificate. (You may have to register, but not to worry as it is free.)

The phrase "woman student" would be better than the use of the word "coed," which is outdated and sexist (even if that word is used to describe her role at the time). Men are as much coeds as women. As such, using the word "coed" only for women suggests that male students are the norm and female students are the exceptions or outliers (or even interlopers). At WP:OTRS Ticket:2015121110001052, the last husband of Veronica Lake, Stewart Lake, made a request that two documents and the following information be shared here.

update in February 2016 - Stewart Lake has provided an updated document and requests that this one be considered in place of the other.

(From 12 December 2015)

Mr. Jacob Rogers at [email protected]. Advised me to edit the article with the correct facts concerning my deceased wife. I edited the article with the correct facts. And someone called Steve Strummer removed my edits and called me a pagewrecker. Mr. Rogers advised me to send an email to your address. And someone would help me to correct the facts or remove the page all together. ..... After we were married December 22, 1971. Please look up the article referenced above and you will see that the facts are all wrong. As you can see by our marriage certificate I am her legal husband. I edited the article. Then someone calling themselves Steve Strummer removed my edits. Calling me a pagewrecker. ..... She divorced him (previous husband) 09/12/1955. We lived together from 1955 until she became pregnant in 1971. We were married 12/22/1971. And we remained together until her death on July 7, 1973. I would appreciate any help which you can give me to remove the article completely. William Detlie was our daughter's brother who passed away July 15, 1943.

(from 15 December 2015) My name is Stewart Lake. I was Constance Frances Marie Lake's 4th legal husband. And I have a Court Ordered marriage certificate to prove it. I sent you a copy of our marriage certificate. I lived with this woman from July 5, 1955. To December 22, 1971 when we were married in California as evidenced by the photo of our marriage certificate. And our daughter Amanda Lake was born one month after our marriage. The corrections which I made was not research. I am the actual 4th husband of Constance Frances Marie Ockleman (A.K.A. Veronica Lake). I should know I am listed on the marriage certificate. I want my wife's information corrected or deleted. ...... My wife did not have a driver's license. Or any other means to travel except with me. Again my name is STEWART LAKE. I am listed on the marriage certificate the top. She is listed in 13A to 13 D. If you will read the marriage certificate you will see that our marriage was and is legal. Please understand my name is not William Detlie. William Detlie was our daughter Amanda's brother who died in 1943. And our daughter chooses to memorialize him by using his name. I am not mad at you Mr. Rasberry, neither Steve Strummer nor anyone else. My wife lived with me from July 5, 1955 until we were married on December 22, 1971. I do not want to file a lawsuit. I just want my wife's information to be correct. Is that too much to ask? ..... I interred her where no one can ever find her. She was my wife. And my entire life. How would you feel if you read false information about your wife's death? ..... Again I, Stewart Lake, am and was the 4th legal husband of Constance Frances Marie Ockleman. A.K.A. Veronica Lake. And proved my marriage legally in a court of law. Our marriage is on file with the California Department Of Public Health. Our marriage is filed with the State Of California. I could not burn my wife up. .... So that I could take her home and bury her in peace. Where no one can ever find her. Mr. Raspberry, I have suffered the loss of my wife for 42 years, 5 months, and 1 week ago today. And I suffer the loss of my wife everyday. If she had not passed away w/o would have been married 44 years on December 22, 2015. All I am asking you people for is to correct the information or delete it. I am her next of kin. I am her living husband. There is no relatives left of her except myself and our daughter. I know how famous she was. I was more famous than she was. Please note who my father was on the marriage certificate. Please tell them to correct the information. Or delete it. That's all I ask of you. I am not mad at you Mr. Raspberry. Or anyone else.

(from 15 December 2015)

I will give you my consent to attach the images of the marriage certificate and obituary to the article. As well as publish them. But you will need to enter the information into the consent form for me. Again I apologize. All I ask for is the truth to be told. A marriage certificate and obituary doesn't lie. .... Myself and our daughter sat with her mother Christmas day 1991. And again December 28, 1991. She asked myself and our daughter for forgiveness. .... I intended to take her to California and bury her. After her death. But we did not make it to the hospital on time. Please fill out the consent for me with all the information. I give you full authority for that. As well as to attach the images to the article. What we have spoken about is between us. But I give you the my consent to attach the images of the marriage certificate and obituary to the article. My name is Stewart Lake. And list it on the consent form, Stewart Lake, legal husband of Constance Frances Marie Ockleman Lake.

Thank you for being so nice and understanding. Just attach the images to the article. And I will be happy and satisfied.

Thanks.

Further request

The user above submitted a more particular request at ticket:2015121010003829. This user submitted some court documentation which stated that one person had been confused with another, and that the person who is the subject of this Wikipedia article had not been married to one person but was to another. Perhaps there was an impersonation, or mistaken identity, but whatever the case a document is provided private which clarifies the following:

  • Veronica Lake was not married to Carlton-monroe.
  • Veronica Lake was married to Stewart Lake.
  • Their children are Amanda Jean Lake born: January 22, 1972, and Stewart Dalton Lake born: January 22, 1972, died January 22, 1972.

The user requests that the Wikipedia article be updated to reflect this information. I think this is a special case meriting special attention because the person writing in claims to have been the victim of someone else impersonating them. Can someone assist? Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:47, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

This is a hoax

Bluerasberry You need to close this out as a hoax. The File:Constance Lake's 1973 obituary.jpg describes Stewart Lake as "famed mega recording artist and motion picture star Stewart Lake." I have been unable to find anything on the internet about Stewart Lake, so he couldn't have been such a star. The whole timeline in that is screwy. It says "Mrs. Lake and her husband" had been living in Stockton, California until 1960 when they allegedly moved to Brooklyn. Veronica Lake was born in Brooklyn. In the next column, it says they married in 1972. She was 50 years old in 1972, and not in good health. She would not have been giving birth to twins. She died in 1973. The fake marriage certificate says they married in 1971. Please see TCM bio of Veronica Lake. She was given the stage name of Lake by producer Arthur Hornblow in 1941. Veronica Lake published her autobiography in 1970, and this guy isn't part of it. The above request is a hoax. Close it out, please. — Maile (talk) 00:45, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

MAILE66 DOES NOT LIKE THE TRUTH

TO: MAILE66

You need to read things carefully. My father and mother lived in Brooklyn until my father was discharged from the military in 1960. They moved from Brooklyn to Stockton in 1960. They also used their address in Brooklyn on their marriage license in Stockton, CA to stop Constance Frances Charlotta Trimble Ockleman Keane from learning where they truly resided. They continued to use their rental home in Brooklyn as needed on trips. How does that grab you? Would you take a chance at being sued for using someones name and image in a book in 1970? I do not think so. That is why my father was not a part of Donald Bain's fiction story. And further more my father sued the entire entire entertainment industry in August 1980 to stop the use of his name, image, and voice. Which the Federal Court Judge in Los Angeles ruled and issued an injunction to pack up all images, recordings, and other things and destroy them. Due to my father's record label RCA releasing recordings which they agreed to never release in August 1973. Why do you think RCA went quietly away in 1980? BMG ate them up when they lost the case my father filed against them. That is why you cannot find my father on the internet as you claim. You are the hoax maile66. Do you want to go against Court Orders by Appointed Judges? We can go to court face to face maile66. And I will win. You cannot question Court Orders.

Yes, you people enjoy accusing people of things they have not did. My mother was 49 in 1972. She was not ill until after myself and my deceased brother were born. You know nothing about my parents. So leave them alone. Eveything which you people write is taken from some other source who faked stories by other people who know nothing about anything. Like CNN and MSNBC who continue to write and report fake news stories. Lookup fake news stories. The media loves to tell lies.

Now maile66 if you would like to face me in a court of law. We can settle this matter in no time at all. Turner Classic Movies derives their stories from what others place without documentation. Oh please do not forget when a court of law rules. It rules the court order forever. Our attorney has registered my mother with the Celebrity Rights Orginization. You cannot use her name and image without permission. Our attorney is well versed in people like you. And he enjoys going to court against them. If another false accusation comes from you. We will settle this in a Court Of Law. You had better read everything carefully again. I am also forwarding hardcopies of your statements to our attornies. As well as having them to forward copies to Judge Edwards and Judge Fowler.

Thank you kindly,
