This account omits all mention of the Egyptian conquest of Sudan by Ismail bin Muhammad Ali. This is an amazing omission in Wikipedia's coverage of Sudanese history -- it's just an incident that ended the dominant Sudanese kingdoms of the 18th century & made Arab culture predominant in the northern part of the country. -- llywrch (talk) 06:22, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Editing name in first line and infobox

[edit]

Hi Gou388, please do not change the first lines of the article to fit your preferred name while the current name of the article is something else. Your explanation here is debatable, and should be discussed on the talk page here so that you can reach a consensus with other editors. I will let other editors who have contributed to this article judge whether this would be an improvement or not. There is also process available if you wish to propose a change to the article's name, see Wikipedia:Requested moves.

I will revert your edit again, please do not reinstate it until there is consensus to do so; doing so would be considered edit-warring (I've left a warning on your user talk page already to more fully explain that). R Prazeres (talk) 22:48, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Turkish sudan?

[edit]

Can someone explain why its called Turkish sudan? From my understanding, the turks never held any sort of power in the sudan aside from it being part of the de jure ottoman egypt (although egypt at this point was fully independent.) If the point is to mark it as an ottoman possession then i believe that at the very least it should be changed to "Ottoman sudan". For instance, you don't see such words as "Turkish syria" or "Turkish algeria" instead it's always referred to as Ottoman. So anywho, I believe the name of the article should be changed to Ottoman sudan, but also show "Egyptian sudan" in the template alongside, again, ottoman sudan. Turkish Sudan was the historic name of the region during the time, despite being ruled directly by the Egyptian Eyalet. The naming here comes from Egypt being ruled by a Turkish-speaking elite (even though Muhammad Ali was Albanian). Turkish Sudan is the historic name of the region during that time, not Ottoman-Egyptian Sudan. However, I agree that "Egyptian Sudan" should also be included in the lead. Ottoman-Egyptian Sudan is not referenced enough compared to Turkish Sudan.
