What's appropriate for an encyclopedia

[edit]

The opening sections for this article are nicely written and detailed, down to about the Demographics section.

I deleted a most of a paragraph that started with "Truckee's population has the potential to surge..." It violated various rules and guidelines. To understand why it's probably easiest to scan WP:NOT. Specifically, Wiki is not a place to anticipate the future (WP:NOTCRYSTAL). It is not a place for politically-motivated facts that are not given independent, verifiable, reliable citations (e.g., "Interestingly enough, while Truckee residents generally do not like the plan due to its potential impact on the environment.") (WP:SOURCE) (WP:CONFLICT).

I'd like to encourage the editors who are personally familiar with Truckee to examine the rules for adding material to Wikipedia. It's an encyclopedia. It's not a free site where local interests can say anything they want, nor is it a battleground for political views, nor is it for self-promotion. Wiki is paid for, and those are the rules the owners establish for using it.

The majority of the article, at this stage is quite appropriate, and compares favorably with some of the best Wiki articles on cities. For those wanting to "put the icing on the cake", have a look at the style guidelines (which are not rules, as such) having to do with linking words in the article. (WP:CONTEXT). The idea is to link those words and phrases that a typical reader might not understand, or to other articles with significant (and strongly related) information. So, for example, it's better not to link "square miles", "km", "married couples", or "income". The existing link to Chicago is probably not what's intended. Check links to make sure they are adding something useful.

Donner inaccuracy

[edit]

No one from Alder Creek ever attempted to cross the summit. Hence the claim "A portion of the camp also returned to the Alder Creek campsite" is wrong — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.24.13.217 (talk) 09:59, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Business and industry section needed

[edit]

Business and industry section needed. Tourism, skiing, etc. likely dominate, but I don't know. Acwilson9 (talk) 00:19, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I think a lot of information on the local tourism industry can be found on Google Books and local archives. Novemberjazz 00:59, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
