Error[edit]

Canada is both #2 and #8? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.219.16.202 (talk) 16:55, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

Could we make the sources a bit clearer? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.130.54.210 (talk) 00:28, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New Discussion[edit]

A discussion has been started at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries/Lists of countries which could affect the inclusion criteria and title of this and other lists of countries. Editors are invited to participate. Pfainuk talk 12:25, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Any plans to update these rankings from five years ago? I've read here in Japan that smoking rates have dropped year after year...currently 21.8%; the lowest ever. According to the Health Ministry here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 180.22.53.2 (talk) 10:08, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the external links to the WHO site is a broken link throwing up a 404 page. And as mentioned above, would like to get a hold of updated data as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.177.69.15 (talk) 03:30, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also, note that Egypt cannot possibly be on the list in two different places. -Ph7five 151.64.144.15 (talk) 09:15, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

USA and Australia of top importance?[edit]

Neither of these is top or bottom of the table, so what's the big deal? APW (talk) 06:40, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's probably because a lot of people on the English Wikipedia come from the US and Australia. Major countries such as the US should have a mention in the lead. Jolly Ω Janner 03:39, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could anybody explain the differences?[edit]

In French Wikipedia, Greece leads the list at 3017 cigarettes/year/adult. But where does the different data come from? --Tobias b köhler (talk) 14:11, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Spain[edit]

Spain data would need to be adjusted to cover for all the fags Brits smuggle out of the country "when on holiday"...

Solomon Island info incorrect.. I used to sell cigarettes to them from Australia. What other stats are incorrect???[edit]

See above. That says it all. I could not believe the rankings. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DragonCricketer (talkcontribs) 21:28, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

India Infobox?[edit]

Is the India thing a typo? Don't want to remove it unless it's not supposed to be there. Thebombzen (talk) 07:32, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Article rankings do not match source[edit]

The rankings don't match the source where they're from. China is high but not number 1... should be fixed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.27.234.183 (talk) 00:37, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List error[edit]

The two top ranking Andorra and Luxemburg can not match to reality. More than 6000 annual cigarettes per individual tells us close to 20 cigarettes per day if everybody smokes. We know neither fact can be right: The fact everybody smoking or the fact average smoking close to 20 cigarettes per day. We also know these two countries are among the wealthier, which actually make them likely to have quiet low smoking rate. Can the explanation be cause the biggest part of sold cigarettes in these two small countries might be sold to tourists?, Leading to big error in measuring consumption per capita. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GJosepsson (talkcontribs)

Did you verify the source? That's what it says. If you believe it's unreliable, make your argument of why it shouldn't be used. — 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 (talk) 21:25, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Further to that, there's some wording in the article explaining why Luxembourg and Andorra are listed at the top. Tbh, if that's the reason, then indeed that's not an RS for this article, as the data reflects tobacco sales, not consumption. — 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 (talk) 01:04, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Move to List of countries by tobacco consumption per capita[edit]

Liz, do you actually oppose the move? Bc if no one opposes it, what's the reason to first propose it here in the talk page? Is that the WP way?

The reason for the move is that tobacco, not cigarettes, is the general term used in the article's RS. — 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 (talk) 01:01, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have an opinion on the title of this article. The title was changed from "tobacco" to "cigarettes" in 2009 and it's been stable for 12 years. I just think an article at a title for over a decade warrants a proposal for a name change. But since this talk page isn't very active, it might be better to bring it up at WP:RM instead. Liz Read! List of countries by cigarette consumption per capitaList of countries by tobacco consumption per capitaTobacco, not cigarettes, is the general term used in the article's sources. — 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 (talk) 04:51, 31 May 2021 (UTC) — 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 (talk) 04:51, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Further to that, tobacco and cigarettes are not synonymous. The data from the Tobacco Atlas does indeed state that it refers to cigarette consumption specifically, but the WHO data I added refers to tobacco consumption in general. So that's the actual reason to rename the article (unless cigarette and tobacco consumption data merit their own separate articles). — 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚 (talk) 06:25, 31 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Move reversion[edit]

Why did you revert the move, Vpab15? And even marked it as a minor change?! Did you not see we agreed on it here, and jumped through all hoops and loops of WP:RM to do it? — 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚  23:47, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Guarapiranga: See this discussion on their talk page for the background. Colin M (talk) 00:16, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. I don't mind either—I know of at least one other page in the naming format you want: Jewish population by country (though WP:NCLIST does say it is a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow)—as long as we don't stay back at square 1 with cigarette consumption, which is inconsistent with the WHO data I added. Hell, it's even inconsistent with the source of the old data on the 2nd table: the Tobacco Atlas! — 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚  00:43, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Map doesn't match the list[edit]

Belarus seems the highest in the map but 49th in the list, am I missing something here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.238.222.99 (talk) 16:50, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Merging with Prevalence of tobacco use[edit]

I think this could be merged with Prevalence of tobacco use. Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 16:21, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

sorting by country nam[edit]

Sorting seems of its not possible to sort by country in alphabetic order 83.97.81.249 (talk) 15:15, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sure it is. Just click on "Country" in the table. Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 13:36, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
