Children with Charles Martel?

[edit]

Both Charles Martel (see Legacy and Family and Children) and Bernhard indicated that she had at least two children with Charles Martel. I don't have any information one way or the other - can anybody out there provide references either way? ThreeBlindMice 02:46, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The source I quoted in this topic (Lexicon of Medieval Geneology), under her entry the various sources only refer to her son Grifo with one exception. From the book by Eduard Hlawitschka, Die Vorfahren Karls des Großen they quote or paraphrase the Salzburg Codex saying that only Grifo made a claim to Charles Martel's heritage and not the children who were clearly the children of concubines like Bernhard, Hieronymus, and Remedius/Remegius. This point was raised as evidence that Swanachild reigned as queen and not as a concubine.
From the same site, Schieffer Rudolf claims in Die Karolinger that the same three sons were from a secondary wife who apparently was named Ruodhaid.
Ernst W. Wies supports this in Karl der Große, where he describes the Pope accompanied by King Pippin and his 3 step brothers (all illegitimate sons for Charles Martel).
Eduard Hlawitschka goes on to say that recent work from L. Weinreich convincingly explains how Bernhard is a son of Charles Martel and a son of Carlomann or brother-in-law to King Pippin. The Genealogia comitum Flandriae I, MG. SS. also depicts Bernhard as son of Charles Martel though incorrectly the son of a queen. (Compare L. Oelsner, Jahrbücher des Fränkischen Reiches unter König Pippin, Leipzig 1871, page 425 Footnote 4.
So, at least German researchers agree that Bernhard is a son of Charles Martel, but I see no evidence for him being a son of Swanahild, other than the reference to the Genealogia Flandriae. That's my two cents. --imars 06:32, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you (or should I say Danke Sehr) for providing all this information (especially your references) and for updating the Charles Martel page accordingly. I have made the corresponding changes to the entry for Bernhard. ThreeBlindMice 06:11, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was happy to be of help. Let's just hope the information is correct, too. ;-) --imars 10:20, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, well, there is that :-). FYI - I just found this site http://mostyn.com/Genealogy/Father/Family/WC10/WC10_305.HTM - (click on the Spouses links) no idea if it is accurate or reliable. You might be in a better position to judge. ThreeBlindMice 19:15, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uncle Odilo

[edit]

This page says that her uncle was Odilo son of Gotfrid. Earlier in the article it mentions two possible fathers for her, Tassilo II and Theodbet, neither of which is a son of Gotfrid. The article for Gotfrid also does not mention any son that might be her father. I hope somebody with more knowledge of this history than me can clarify this Redriv (talk) 00:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC) Redriv[reply]
