Kingdom[edit]

Even if this article is not merged into Kingdom of Mysore, its principal author needs to explain the presence of Mysore's titular rulers (the Wodeyars) during all of the relevant times. Magic♪piano 17:04, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've tagged this for someone with expertise in Indian history to have a look: please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject India#Sultanate of Mysore. Top Jim (talk) 10:19, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
My question was based on the observation that, during the claimed lifetime of this sultanate, there were almost always rajahs from the (Hindu) Wodeyar dynasty on the formal throne, including during the times when Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan ran the show. This was true (as far as I know, which is not in depth) until 1796, when Tipu Sultan didn't bother to name a successor to the rajah that died. However, Tipu himself was killed in 1799, when the British restored the Wodeyars to power. All of this implies to me that there never really was a sultanate, with the possible exception of 1796-99; probably not worth an entire article.
Since this article was IMHO created by someone with an agenda, the presence of the Wodeyars as de jure (if effectively powerless) rulers is a significant hurdle to overcome in furthering that agenda. Magic♪piano 14:49, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think this should be merged, or taken to AFD? Top Jim (talk) 14:54, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's a really good question; at best, I think it's a redirect. There appears to be at least some historical reference to Hyder and Tipu as sultans despite their lack of legal status (and the fact that Tipu's full name includes "Sultan"), so an argument can probably be constructed against deletion. (Their rule was not always recognized by their neighbours; I know of at least one treaty negotiation that was complicated by another rajah's refusal to deal with Hyder as a peer.) There's also a parallel discussion that happened here, the consensus thus far seems to indicate moving ahead with a merge would be appropriate. Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 09:02, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've redirected to Kingdom of Mysore#Under Haider and Tipu. Magic♪piano 00:20, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
