Peer Review of NAM2301 Contributions[edit]

This author contributed the sections "Patterning" and "Mechanism" under the sub-heading "Bioluminescence" in the "Physiological Features and Adaptations" section.

The content added is relevant in the sense that it differentiates the Splendid lanternshark from others of the species.

This line should be explained further: "The bioluminescence spectra wavelength of Etmopterus splendidus is 476 nm, which is the wavelength of light in their environment" What does it mean to emit the same wavelength light as the light in the environment?

Organization can be improved in the listing of different photophore regions, perhaps just list with commas rather than bullet points. It throws off the readability of the article

Some of the sentence structure in the "Mechanism" section is choppy. Here for example: "The debate centers around the usage of coelenterazine and coelenterazine-dependent luciferase in the photophores of Etmopterus species. This is a proposed luciferin system"

The brevity of the "Mechanism" section makes it hard to understand the dynamics of the debate. Further detail about both sides of the theories for mechanism would be useful

"While many species alter the intensity of the light they produce in order to mimick the changes of surface light intensity, splendid lanternsharks - like other bioluminescent sharks - produce a constant light but change their depth to adjust how potential predators below them see the light" This is perhaps an explanation for what is means to emit the same wavelength of light as the environment, and as such should be moved up to the patterning section.
