Relation to Another Story?[edit]

While I have not read (or ever even heard of this story) I noticed that it seems to bear a striking resemblance to "A Very Old Man With Enormouse Wings" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Someone with more knowledge of the story than I might wish to write on this, for instance, who came first, was one influenced by the other? Also, there is a song by Loreena McKennitt with the same title, she gets the word from the Skellig Islands off the west coast of Ireland. Here Monks copied religious literature. Mabe this has something to do with the title? --Leif902 18:09, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The other thing that is interesting in Skellig is Almond's numerous references to birds. (Mina, Falconer road, Crow Road, Coot....) Was this done intentionally?

Birds figure in The Guardian's recent blurb on My Name is Mina (2010), the prequel on the shortlist for the 2011 Guardian Prize. Mina's journal describes "... her fears and hopes, especially for the fledgling birds she watches closely from her perch up a tree."

Plot summary[edit]

The plot summary was grammatically poor in an number of places so I decided to go about and tidy it up a little bit--Crimzon2283 (talk) 09:27, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Grace or Joy?[edit]

The name of the baby seems to be quite a hard desition over grace or joy, but they end up choosing Joy. =

Characters[edit]

I have cut this from the end of the lead section. [The source is a bulleted list, one item each line. --P64]

(quote) Characters •Mina •Skellig? •Mum •Dad •Joy •Mrs Dando •Miss Clarts? •Mina's mum •Leakey •Coot

Infobox data[edit]

1. Is this a paperback original?

Paperback original? i don't yet know. See the next section (#Editions). ...

2. Is it "followed by" Kit's Wilderness except chronologically in Almond's career as a writer? (I see that Tyne & Wear is the common setting.)

Series. Anyway should we identify a series comprising Skellig and My Name is Mina (2010), using series= and listing Mina as predecessor (because a sequel) or follower (because next published in the series). --P64 (talk) 16:38, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

followed_by means the next published book with related content, as in a book series. Today on my second pass I have replaced Kit's Wilderness, which seems to be unrelated, with My Name is Mina, which is a prequel. I have not revised either the infobox or the text to call this a series. --P64 (talk) 22:56, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 Done

3. Illustrator Adam Fisher. Three months later, I have manually reverted the specification of illustrator=Adam Fisher (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Skellig&diff=517218039&oldid=516163845 15:36, 11 October 2012‎ 86.168.96.206]).

  • If I skim correctly, none of 97 WorldCat library records specifies an illustrator as a creator; all of the numerous second authors who show up in the search report are translators. (That is not decisive. Some WorldCat records identify illustrators only in the details.)
  • ISFDB does not cover any 1998 edition.
  • Google adam fisher illustration skellig does not immediately hit a Fisher-illustration edition of Skellig.

If Adam Fisher (presumably Adam Fisher Illustration where I find no index or search engine) did illustrate any edition of this book we need a reference for that. --P64 (talk) 22:26, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Editions[edit]

After examining multiple listings at WorldCat and ISFDB, i do not believe they provide accurate identification of particular editions re ISBN, cover image, cover artist.

ref name=worldcat "Formats and Editions of Skellig". WorldCat. Retrieved 2012-10-14.</ref>
Skellig title listing at the Internet Speculative Fiction Database

I suspect that Hodder & Stoughton did issue multiple editions under ISBN 0-340-71600-2. Re the front cover images and artists I have merely named F.S. in the caption as cover artist for our image. I am not certain of any edition (imprint, isbn, or date) using that cover; not the first ed., according to a previous editor.

The retrospective Carnegie Medal citation implies to me that we have ISBN and cover image for the paperback in print 2007.

ref name=medal1998 (Carnegie Winner 1998). Living Archive: Celebrating the Carnegie and Greenaway Winners. CILIP. Retrieved 2012-07-11.</ref>

Even if I am right, this doesn't help much, as the first paperback may have remained in print.

--P64 (talk) 22:56, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I believe we now have a 1st edition image, according to the source this is "First UK Edition, First Printing. A true first edition, first printing (first impression) with the number "1" to the copyright page to indicate a true first print." GrahamHardy (talk) 19:45, 22 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Main Article?[edit]

Under the 'film' section, should it have a subheading that says something along the line of "Main Article: Skellig (Movie)" as it refrences an existing article? Wrosh (talk) 03:43, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
