copyedit[edit]

It's the second paragraph mainly that needs a bit of a polish, plus what are the words(?) in brackets? If this is a failed representation of, e.g., Burmese text they should be fixed, otherwise removed. Mutt Lunker 00:33, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Akyab[edit]

Map fix[edit]

The map needs to be fixed. Sittwe is not in the ocean. Dylanvt (talk) 19:21, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dylanvt, thanks for the heads-up. Apparently, the coordinates of the pushpin map "Myanmar" are off. Thanks. Hybernator (talk) 05:26, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't seem to be[edit]

The article previously stated

In early 1825, during the [[First Anglo-Burmese War]], the British forces landed at Sittwe and stationed their forces by a pagoda, Ahkyaib-daw, which is still standing in the city.

Aside from the lack of sourcing for the British barracks or its relevance to the name, the rest seems entirely wrong. Wikipedia and a single review on Trip Advisor seem to be the only attestation that a place by this name still exists in the town. The town's main pagoda—occupying the site described by the British as the location of the jawbone pagoda—is the Lawkanandar Pagoda according to Google Maps and everything else on the internet. The article also needs the actual Arakanese and Burmese forms of the name, with the correct modern transcription instead of the 1840s one or the apparently made-up one we've been using. — LlywelynII 13:51, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
