Christian Anarchist?
[edit]is he a Christian anarchist?
Yes he is. 137.81.40.170 (talk) 22:43, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
He's also a kind of Christian Socialist, perhaps even Marxist, though he probably would be reluctant to use those terms himself. In the President book, he condemns capitalism and the American Dream as un-Christian. When I have time I'll post something to the article about it myself, as he makes it such a prominent part of his philosophy.DesScorp (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 22:27, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
I haven't read enough of Claiborne to quote him, but anarchism is not socialism/Marxism. Rather, it critiques the power of the modern state in either capitalistic or socialistic forms. The alternative, small economies created by groups like Simple Way are an embodied, nonviolent rejection of the state. Also, as a Christian, I doubt if Claiborne would agree with Marx's philosophical materialism or the idea that class warfare is inevitible and a welcome way forward. He is a pacifist influenced by the anabaptist tradition, which places its hope in the Lamb's war - the nonviolent and inbreaking Kingdom/Commonwealth of God. That said, he does place more emphasis on critiquing capitalism, given our context. But that does not make him a Marxist. .... For more on Christian anarchism http://www.jesusradicals.com,

My understanding is that he is a Christian Anarchist. He definitely is quick to point out the ways that capitalism creates poverty and works contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ, and I know some of the circles he is at least moderately involved with are Christian Anarchists.

I would argue that Claiborne is neither an anarchist or a marxist. While his texts and talks carry political overtones, he advocates Christians transcending government. In the same sense that he doesn't advocate for a given politician or political agenda, I don't think he'd advocate for the disassembling of government. Claiborne's predominant agenda is about Church, not government. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.155.230.21 (talk) 19:55, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
Transcending goverment IS anarchism! Though if you mean to say that he is more concerned with the Church than with any polical theory, I think you are right. My main point was that he is not a Marxist, and his approach is most consistent with anarchism. 131.238.31.40 (talk) 05:59, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Guys this is getting dangerously close to violating WP:Forum. Eastshire (talk) 18:03, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
This article needs an overhaul. It is filled with mistakes and information that is not cited. I took out the word "liberal" under controversy because it is misleading and is not cited or supported. (joey (talk) 15:34, 17 October 2008 (UTC))

emerging church
[edit]I challenged a recent edit to the reception section.
In April 2010, Shane responded to criticism about presumingly being associated with the emerging church. He stated he felt falsely labeled and that the emerging church language seemed "utterly unhelpful." He noted however that indeed, "there is a new evangelicalism that loves Jesus and wants to change the world," and that he'd rather focus on celebrating this new movement.
I don't think this belongs in the reception section. I don't want to get "fights" over the emerging church started in this article. However better worded it could go into the biography or a new section. Challenging my removal with "Then take out Shane's thoughts on traditional churches, capitalism, socialism" is the wrong way to approach this. Basileias (talk) 03:15, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
