Questions still arise as to the legality of Socorro County's acquisition of the communal property of the La Joya Land Grant. Some feel this was illegal, because the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ensured land grants would be honored and protected by the Federal Government. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided for non taxation of legal land grants. Since the La Joya Land Grant was given a patent by the United States Congress many heirs of The La Joya Land Grant feel the Land Grant was stolen from them. The land grant should have not been taxed by Socorro County to begin with. As for General Campbell's generosity; he donated the land to the conservancy to offset federal taxes that he owed.
