I'm surprised that there isn't any information on this company's new, sexist, outdated, and homophobic behaviour. This company has recently added a rule that basically says that all actors must play characters of their own sex and cannot play those of the opposite sex. Forget that this throws out hundreds of years of wonderful tradition within the theatre, this is just plain insulting. When are people going to begin making noise and protesting, and why isn't there any information about that now? It's important!

The above comments are evidently based on a misunderstanding of Samuel French Ltd.’s procedures. Samuel French has no objection in principle to amateur actors playing roles of the opposite sex, provided that the integrity of the play in question is not compromised. Indeed this may be appropriate in some circumstances, such as a girls’ school where there are no boys available to play the male characters . However, performing groups should be aware that some authors may take a different view with respect to their own plays and are legally entitled to do so.

What Samuel French does not permit without permission having been granted by the author is the changing of the sex of characters within a particular script. This is an entirely different situation from the one referred to above. For example if , say, Hercule Poirot became a female detective called Yvette Poirot or Mother Courage became Father Courage these would clearly be misrepresentations of the playwrights’ intentions and thus a breach of their moral rights under copyright law.
