Notability of High Schools

[edit]

The notability of High Schools has not been confirmed by policy; however, consensus has been created due to the outcome of AFD discussions. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Common outcomes#Education states that, "Most independently accredited degree-awarding institutions and high schools are being kept except when zero independent sources can be found to prove that the institution actually exists." Similarly Wikipedia:Notability (high schools) states that "Our normal practice is to retain articles on high schools. This is for pragmatic reasons, as there is almost always suitable sourced material available, and it is more sensible to consistently accept them rather than argue about each one to try to eliminate the very occasional school for which coverage is hard to find. This default acceptance allows editors to turn their attention to more productive tasks." Please note that both of these are essays, not policy, but seem to reflect consensus. Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article guidelines states that "articles that are about an elementary/primary school or middle school will normally be merged into the school district article they are associated with" while "School district and high/secondary school articles are usually kept, as they are almost always considered notable, unless their existence cannot be verified in order to stop hoaxes." In addition, a failed proposal to require individual notability for all schools, which also stated that High Schools would be considered notable if they exhibited "factors such as notable alumni, community importance, notable sporting and scholastic successes" and/or reliable coverage "based on news coverage of sports and academic awards, relative size, and importance to the community and region". I absolutely disagree that this is in any way established consensus and so I have added back the notability tag.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 05:39, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to point out two instances that first led me to believe that this was established consensus. This AFD for an elementary school contains text stating that High schools are normally taken to be notable. In this AFD, three editors explained to me that High Schools are notable. I think User:JamesBWatson once told me that high schools are notable, but I am not positive so I will inform him of this discussion. Ryan Vesey Review me! 05:50, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've previously had a question about the notability and sourcing practices of some of the projects, especially in entertainment. They seem to be very lax relative to core policy [1]. BeCritical__Talk 05:56, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Copying my comment from Jimbo's talk page. "What is the basis that every College/University deserves an article? There are many small technical colleges with little information. Check out Teacher's Training College of Kruševac. The high school in my town has much more information than that." Personally, I think the policy should be the same for both. Jim - Could you think before you type sometimes? Your pronouncements inevitably get super-user treatment. There have been 100s of high school afds since 2005, and probably 99% keeps. The essay announces general principles which lessen the AfD burden in this area and lead to a consistent wikipedia.--Milowenttalkblp-r 17:29, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Specific notability of this article

[edit]

I have added some information to this article which asserts notability, to avoid any belief of edit warring, can the notability tag be removed from this article? Ryan Vesey Review me! 06:01, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The information about the lawsuit makes this article close to WP:COATRACK as most of the prose of the article is on this one lawsuit, and companies (or in this case a school) are treated the same as BLPs. Secret account 06:37, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As the lawsuit information is currently a undue weight coatrack, I have removed it. A passing mension is acceptable, but not the entire prose other than saying its a school. Secret account 06:50, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't disrupt Wikipedia to make a point. A lawsuit of the nature I discovered is significant in the history of the High school. I am working to add more information. Ryan Vesey Review me! 06:55, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tell me how I'm disrupting Wikipedia to prove a point? The information about the lawsuit in which there is very little information about the school in non-independent sources, is a clear undue weight. Removing that information avoids any problems with WP:BLPGROUP in the future. A passing mention of the lawsuit is acceptable, but not half the article. I'm not under any agenda of any kind. Secret account 07:08, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is moot now, I have added more information and the lawsuit can no longer be considered coatrack. Ryan Vesey Review me! 07:22, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
