I think that Mr. Atkinson, who is undoubtedly one of the most prominent figures in British comedy, deserves a little more than this glorified stub. One of these days I will get round to it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by N^O^el (talkcontribs) 07:59, 24 January 2005 (UTC)

Cars

Already mentioned is Rowan Atkinson's fast car habit, and having run a long-term car for Car magazine. Rowan is currently running an MG Xpower SV for Evo magazine [a British publication] and writes monthly. This would seem to fit in with the article well, plus would be useful for fans of Atkinsons who wish to read about this, but was deleted when I added it. Any objections to it going back in? -anonymous

Photo

Can someone find a better more recent photo of him as himself, not Mr Bean? The current one is over 10 years old. There was a better one recently but someone deleted it. TR (talk) 07:13, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Blackadder most notable role

Changed his most notable role from Mr Bean to Blackadder. Whilst he is well known for both, blackadder in the U.K. at least is better known.

The fact that it is better known in the UK does not make it his most notable worldwide81.132.242.154 15:01, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

BIRTHPLACE

CAN SOMEONE CLARIFY HIS PLACE OF BIRTH? MOST INTERNET SOURCES CLAIM NEWCASTLE?? ANY SOURCES?

birth place

Consett, Co Durham, England acording to another page:) lol

(: eddie :)

- Generally, famous people from Consett are credited as having come from Newcastle (Anthony from Big Brother was from "Newcastle" according to the Channel 4 site). It's a simple fact that if most people read he was from Consett they'd be clueless. - MARC

That's true, although the media fail to realise "Anthony" doesn't have a geordie accent as it's so far from Tyneside. Then it seems that everyone from the NE is a "geordie". Whilst on the subject shouldn't it be listed as Consett, x miles NW (I think) from Durham city. After all, Durham is its closest city isn't it, certainly within its own county? It is in Co. Durham, whereas Newcastle is in Northumberland/Tyne and Wear - depending on whether you accept the existence of T+W. Durham is also a reasonably famous enough city - at least across Europe.hedpeguyuk 10:51, 11 Jun 2006 (UTC)

Parsimonious?

From the Spitting Image song "Never met a nice South African": "I had lunch with Rowan Atkinson when he paid and wasn't late" [1]. Could be an addition to the comments about his personal wealth?

Aspergers Syndrome?

I recently noticed an online discussion thar raised the possibility that Rowan may have Aspergers Syndrome. Is it something that has been asked of Rowan? I'm not certain if it's true, but the symptoms mentioned seem to fit certain aspects of his comedy style and personality. I remember Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie publically commenting about their personal dealings with forms of mental illness, so I wondered if Rowan has commented on this. He could certainly bring attention to it if he is a sufferer. Just curious. --24.47.147.176 03:18, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

He doesn't act like Mr. Bean in real life!!! lmao ---anonymous

No he does not, but he is a suspiciously goood actor. Mr Beans humour is soft, gay (stupid), bad taste, and absolutely fabulous. How do you even introduce an Army helicopter in a nativity scene? And before that a butcher truck turned up to drive away some sheep. Then Dr.Who turned up. Bad day indeed, and how does Jesus suppose sleep that night?

Even when he dishes out on everyone and is called Edmund, there his humour is bad taste. He can say Good thing I landed on something soft. It was me. Then Atkinson can say that was a good thing. In one charachter, he can be competitive, and then stand asleep in a very nachholeptic manner. He could not make that one up. A second character likes the song "does your mama know". Is this done in good taste? --85.164.222.45 (talk) 01:01, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

short film or episode

{{spoiler}} Sometime in the 80ies I saw in TV a 30-40 minutes independent episode or short film, where Rowan Atkinson is told by a doctor that he has only a few hours left to live. So he goes out and tries to enjoy what is left of his life. In the meanwhile the doctor finds out that he had mixed up some papers and actually it was someone else that would die soon. So there starts a countdown as the doctor races to find him and let him know of his mistake. On the last few seconds he sees him across the street, but traffic being thick Rowan can't hear him, so he attempts to cross the street and on time 0:00 a car hits him. I have never since seen or heard of this very good episode or film again. Does anybody know more details about it (even title would help). Hoverfish 21:47, 29 September 2006 (UTC) -- Got it! (How nice to answer it myself, actually). Thanks IMDb! It's called Dead on Time (1983) and it seems to have disappeared indeed. Hoverfish 22:33, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Ph.D

There's a mention here that Rowan Atkinson may have a Ph.D. However this is not mentioned anywhere in the article. Can someone confirm this? JameiLei 08:47, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Private life/life saver

I'm surprised to see nothing about how protective he is about his private life, and that there's no mention of this incident http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/showbiz/1239279.stm when he took the controls of a plane from the collapsed pilot and saved his family - they may be no real confirmation (since Atkinson won't talk about it) but it's highly notable.

David 16:30, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

I too have read elsewhere that he is a very private guy (and potentially does not like his fans). I was suprised to not see the info listed here. 07:06, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Watching his work

I remember reading years and years ago an interview (either with Curtis or Ben Elton) which stated he never, ever watches anything he's done because he thinks he's pretty unfunny... Does anyone have any verification for this? (Actually, is it all that unusual for a comedian, I wonder?)

I thought he went to NPS as well. And I heard that he spent a brief period at the Newcastle Royal Grammar School, although there is nothing to suggest this on NRGS' wikipedia entry... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.111.220.6 (talk) 18:52, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Royal wedding

Does anyone know why he was invited to the wedding of Prince Charles? It does deserve a mention in the article..I just dont know how to put it...--Camaeron (t/c) 16:37, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

He probably had a cunning plan. Seriously though, do you mean Charles' 2nd wedding? GoodDay (talk) 17:09, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Ahh, when you said Royal Wedding I thought of Diana and Charles as that was the Royal Wedding, and made Diana a Princess. Can you please bring a reference here that he attended. Thanks, SqueakBox 17:15, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
He was invited to the wedding because they are friends - this was, in fact, mentioned when news broadcasts of the wedding were televised, and the cameras lit on Mr. Atkinson (as well as Stephen Fry, but I digress). It certainly stands to reason that they are obviously friends, since the wedding was fairly private, & therefore there was no other reason for him to be asked. So, how does one provide a reference to a news broadcast?? & yes, I, too, thought it should be mentioned and also am at somewhat of a loss as to how to incorporate it gracefully without just dropping it in unceremoniously. (And, just for the record, Charles & Camilla's wedding was a Royal wedding, because a) Charles is a Royal & b) Camilla is one, too. The Palace has just decided, for whatever reason, to propitiate all the Diana fans by not having her be called "Princess".) FlaviaR (talk) 12:32, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Firstly, a good segue might be Mr Atkinson's non-appearance on the cover of the comedy TV tie-in book Not the Royal Wedding (the only member of the team not present, he was replaced on the cover by... Prince Charles). Secondly, to cite a broadcast episode, you might try this Template:Cite_episode template. :o) ntnon (talk) 19:27, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Firstly, thank you for the template tip. Secondly, it may very well be the best segue in the Universe, but until you mentioned it, I did not know it existed :-) FlaviaR (talk) 05:24, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

This was the wedding when Fergie's daughters communicated by talking in to their blouses as to keep the noise down. Were they debating nice boys in the church? Were there any of those that were not related to them? A short while after the wedding, there was the Royal Ascot. Maybe they were discussing odds. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.164.222.45 (talk) 01:06, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

I can't find any sources proving that rowan crashed his veyron, so i will remove the crashed recently part. --90.213.246.160 (talk) 20:12, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it would appear to be a misattribution. "A" Bugatti Veyron crashed in March 2007, and due to its rarity some people assumed it to be Mr Atkinson's. However, this website says otherwise. So unless there's a more recent - and under-reported - crash involving Atkinson, this is a correct removal. :o) ntnon (talk) 19:37, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Gemma Atkinson

There are those who wish to make it clear that he is no relation to Gemma Atkinson, one instance of this being "Contrary to some sources, he is not the father of former Hollyoaks actress Gemma Atkinson." This seems pointless to me, but if there is a lot of confusion over this issue and we therefore are to include this then perhaps we should find a reference for it. In the meantime I've taken it out. Grammar

In 2009, he criticized homophobic speech legislation, saying that the House of Lords must vote against a government attempt to remove a free speech clause in an anti-gay hate law. Confusingly, the source calls that law a "gay hate law". Homophobic legislation about speech? An anti-gay law? Or a gay law? It seems to be a law against homophobic speech, but what is that "free speech clause"? Is it a clause that restricts free speech if that speech incites homophobia, or a clause that restricts the application of that law to preserve the freedom of speech? I read the source but I don't get it. Too many garden paths.--87.162.0.50 (talk) 17:59, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Overemphasis on Mr. Bean character

I think it's fair to suggest that the article, at least through its images, overemphasises Mr. Bean. It shouldn't do. In the UK Atkinson is perhaps better known for Blackadder, or more generally as a varied actor-comedian. Bean is always going to be more recognisable around the world because the muteness of the character meant that the show was successful everywhere... but I don't think very many British people or more avid followers of Atkinson's work would regard it as his best.--Tomsega (talk) 13:52, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Stuttering?

It is worthwhile to see some actual footage of Atkinson speaking out of character. Regardless, even in character he does not have a "problem" with stuttering. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.176.137.11 (talk) 13:38, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

He doesn't have a problem with stuttering as he is utilising a technique to overcome it by visualising the problematic syllable before speech, hence the over emphasis on hard B sounds in "Bob". Tony Robinson explains this in Blackadder The whole Rotten Saga and BlackAdder Rides again. Resonanttoe (talk) 14:46, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

This quote "In October 2010, his Blackadder co-star Stephen Fry confessed on The Rob Brydon Show that he had contemplated asking Sastry out (she was a make-up artist on the series), but discovered she was going on a date with Atkinson and kept quiet. Fry was best man at Atkinson's wedding in 1990." Can't be right, considering the article on Stephen Fry mentions his homosexuality from an early age. Perhaps it was meant as a joke —Preceding unsigned comment added by 145.97.224.177 (talk) 16:39, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Genre

I don't quite understand why Atkinson is placed only in the physical comedy genre. Granted, an important portion of his work fits very well into the physical comedy genre (Like Mr. Bean), but another important portion of his work fits a more verbal comedy (Like Blackadder), and he is extremely competent at both. I would consider it both inacurate and a disservice to categorize him in such an incomplete way. --Nibor7301 (talk) 18:21, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

the article says the gemma is rowan's daughter . As far as I know , this is a false rumour . Unless anyone has proof that she is his daughter, i'll be removing that information from the article. :)Little.miss.sunshine (talk) 03:33, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

television advertisements

I have removed the table of television advertisements, as unsourced, and frankly trivia - they hardly play a significant part in Atkinson's career. I there are any significant advertisements (as shown through in-depth coverage in published sources), they can be mentioned in the article text. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:47, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

The adverts for Barclaycard were most definitely the most significant for Atkinson, and of course lead to the Johnny English films. They are mentioned in the history section of Barclays.com and are often picked up on every time any mention is made of Atkinson, Johhny English or (for lazy journalists) Mr Bean. Everything else advert-wise is surplus I agree. NKTP (talk) 20:46, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Alan Clark anecdote

Hello. I've never really done this before, so please forgive me if I do something wrong. I just wanted to really question the relevance of that Alan Clark anecdote in the 'Cars' section. As far as I can see all it does is make Alan Clark, whoever he is (I'm not British), sound like a bit of a dick. Certainly it reveals more about Clark than it does about Atkinson. I'm not going to change it or anything, but I do think it's worth considering getting rid of it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.147.150.70 (talk) 03:21, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Alan Clark was a politician. He also published a series of diaries, which according to The Alan Clark Diaries page document the downfall of Margaret Thatcher. How reliable they are in regards to Atkinson is open to debate; however the reaction from Atkinson according to the diary would be typical for him; he hates being recognised. Aeroplane family?

Perhaps this sort of thing is perfectly commonplace in biographies of absurdist British comedians, but it does look rather odd that the paragraph, "In March 2001, while Atkinson was on an holiday trip to Kenya, the pilot of his private plane fainted. Atkinson managed to maintain the plane in the air until the pilot recovered, and was able to fly back to the United Kingdom.", has been filed (for want of a better word) under "Marriage and children". Is this even very relevant information? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Torbjörn Björkman (talkcontribs) 20:50, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Sequel or Trequel

I've found several dictionary sites which state trequel is third in a series after a sequel so I think it would be better than saying a second sequel. Feel free to contribute to this discussion, the more the merrier. Have a Merry Christmas ChocolateRabbit 17:33, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for discussing—and for the self-revert. "Trequel" is a neologism. It's generally a bad idea to use neologisms in articles because many readers will have no idea of their meaning, so they're an example of unclear prose. Perhaps the word will become common. If so, we can revisit this. In the meantime, a vague reference to "several dictionary sites" is no evidence that the usage is common or generally accepted. Dictionary sites aren't good sources; dictionaries are. The only site you've specified is yourdictionary.com, an aggregator whose entry for the word is from Wiktionary, and that won't fly. Nobody else has an entry—not American Heritage, Merriam-Webster, Webster's New World, Random House, Chambers, Collins or Oxford. With no offense intended to our lexicographical colleagues in the next room, when a crowd-sourced dictionary is the only one with an entry for the word, that's not good enough for our purposes. @Rivertorch: Hi, I agree with your opinion, I think sequel or another sequel, is probably better than trequel, possible jargon that most readers may not understand, so having it as sequel would be easier for people to read which is obviously better than a word that is difficult to understand, so feel free to keep it as sequel is you think it's fine. 2016 interview on retirement of Mr. Bean

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2016-03-21/rowan-atkinson-i-will-never-wave-goodbye-to-mr-bean/

"Rowan Atkinson: I will never wave goodbye to Mr Bean The Bean and Blackadder actor says he would never retire any of his comic characters, even when more "serious" roles come his way"

This is in direct conflict with his 2012 interview. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ‎66.18.217.119 (talk) 00:06, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

In the “Early life” section, please change the link “The Queen’s College, Oxford” to “the Queen’s College, Oxford”. 31.74.39.7 (talk) 22:20, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. RivertorchFIREWATER 07:51, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
Done: our default style, as described at MOS:THECAPS, is not to capitalize in situations like this. @Rivertorch: on the contrary I think we would need sources to show dominant usage of a capitalized form mid-sentence, in order to make an exception. Not an RS itself, of course, but generally corroborative, our article on the college shows no such convention being applied.—Odysseus1479 17:31, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
No big deal either way, Odysseus, but as I recall (it has been well over a week) a quick search indicated that the "The" appears, and is capitalised, in official documents of the college. That was my reasoning, anyway. RivertorchFIREWATER 15:27, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

2001 flight incident

This bit is without doubt interesting and I would keep it, but it shouldn't be the first thing mentioned under "personal life" without any heading or context. As if this were somehow the essence of his private life. Please add a new heading at the bottom of the section and put it down there. Thank you. 2.203.201.61 (talk) 00:22, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

Personal life

The first sentence in the personal life mentions an event from Atkinson's trip to Kenya in 2001. Although it is interesting as a curiosity, is it realy relevant here? Nicolas Hermann FR (talk) 10:07, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

I just mentioned that as well. (Didn't see your post.) Apparently nobody's working on this article. Shame that it's protected then... I think it is relevant, but shouldn't be the first sentence. See below. If you can edit the article, I think you should. 2.203.201.61 (talk) 00:24, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

The article already includes (with proper reference):
His three older brothers are Paul, who died as an infant; Rodney, a Eurosceptic economist who narrowly lost the UK Independence Party leadership election in 2000; and Rupert.[2][3]
