UN Map

I'm not sure that the map image is public domain. The UN does place a copyright notice on its main website, though this is not the same UN website from which the image came. See WP:CP. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 9 July 2005 18:31 (UTC)

• I found another map of the subdivisions at the website of a different U.N. agency. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N. website contains an explicit copyright statement that appears to me to allow for public domain use of this black & white map. The map is posted at Image:EthiopiaRegionsBW.gif with the UN image copyright tag. I'll let someone else add it if they feel it meets the copyright standards and would be a useful addition. -- Jaded Thea (talk) 10:41, 10 July 2005 (UTC)

Harari

It appears that Harari consists mostly of the city of Harar. Does anyone happen to know why it was made a region, rather than a chartered city like Addis Ababa or Dire Dawa? I know Harar is much smaller than the other two in terms of population. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 15:12, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

My guess is that this is because the city is the home of the Harari people, unusual (at least in Ethiopia) in that they are an urban ethnicity. (Non-Hararis also live in the city.) -- MikeGasser (talk) 03:43, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

I figured that's why it wasn't simply part of the surrounding Oromia Region. Harari (the region) does not appear to be much bigger than Harar (the city) and its immediate environs. But I guess the 2 chartered cities weren't drawn up along ethnic lines like the regions, so that's why Harar wasn't a chartered city...? -- Gyrofrog (talk) 05:15, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Exclave within Oromia?

Does anyone know what the small area is in the western part of Oromia? As depicted in this map, it's the small area just south of Benishangul-Gumaz (which is labeled with "4"). It think it's approximately the same location as the city of Nekemte. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 19:26, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

If you follow the OCHA link in the article and click on the Benishangul-Gumaz section of the map there, it shows that there are two exclaves in Oromia. (We appear to have missed one). Both are part of Belo Jegonfoy woreda in Kamashi zone. I can't find an explanation through Google but http://www.dppc.gov.et/downloadable/map/Atlas/ET%20Admin%204-Benshangul.pdf backs up the OCHA map. A guess is that it is predominantly of whatever ethnic group is in Benishangul-Gumaz than the surrounding area, so was included when they created the new kililoch. - BanyanTree 19:41, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

To quickly answer the first question: Yeah, it's an exclave of Benishangul-Gumaz, and that was unfortunately not made too clear in the map. I should probably draw a line there or something.

Secondly: Yeah, with the low resolution it's difficult to see the second exclave, though you just barely can in the numbered map; if you look at my blank map, which is what I used for all coloring, labeling, etc., you can clearly see it: Image:Ethiopia regions blank.png. --Golbez 05:40, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Suggest merging the regional flags

I don't agree. Expanding both articles would produce two interesting articles, just like there is an article about U.S. States (U.S. state) and about U.S. state flags (Flags of the U.S. states). Of course those articles are much longer, but I hope the article about Ethiopian flags will become longer in the near future. NL-Ninane (talk) 14:38, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

• Oppose - Today I expanded the Subdivisions of Ethiopia article, which was quite stub-like, but it was clear from the start that it should describe the several levels of administrative divisions of Ethiopia. The Regions of Ethiopia article, on the other hand, only covers the Level 1 administrative division: regions. Subdivisions of Ethiopia is the only article which ties together and explains the relationship between regions, zones, and woredas. Also, the "Subdivisions of" article is a standard topic title for every country. See this standard navbar (they have these for all continents):
