Joseph T Varnhagen was a golf course superintendent who was involved in the construction of Oakmont CC in Pittsburgh. He came to Detroit and managed the construction and perhaps made some modifications to the design work done by Hugh Alison. There is an article in the Plum Hollow 50th anniversary book that was written by his daughter that goes into some detail of his role in the process.≈≈≈≈

Varnhagen[edit]

This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered.

At the Teahouse, COI IP editor 107.5.117.168 has requested changing the name "T.A Varnhagen" to "Joseph T.A. Varnhagen", based on his obit. While it does say he was a "builder of golf courses", it doesn't mention this specific golf course, and neither does the course's official website (though it mentions Colt and Alison). I can't find a reliable source (that is not circular) that connects Varnhagen with this course. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 03:54, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This would place Mr. Varnhagen at 57 years old when Plum Hollow was built, which means that theoretically it could be him.
However, the Plum Hollow Country Club states that architects Harry Colt and Charles Hugh Alison designed the course there, so one could say that they are the ones who "built" this golf course.
Being a builder of golf courses in Michigan at the time of its construction is not nearly enough verification that this particular builder was involved in this particular construction. I think it's best to omit the name altogether, as there is no direct reference connecting the two.
