Commuting
[edit]The section on the railway says "and commute to nearby towns such as Wigan, Ormskirk, and Preston". Wigan is clearly a commutor destination, and especially before the curves at Burscough Bridge were lost so was Ormskirk I suppose, but are Southport and Manchester (with direct connections) not more likely destinations? Is there any reason for picking these three towns?--NHSavage 20:40, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
Village or small town?
[edit]Surely the references to Parbold as a 'small village' are out of date? Today Parbold is a small dormitory town. It has two churches, two primary schools, a library, a purpose-built community hall, a telephone exchange, and a bank, in addition to those facilities already mentioned. - I suppose it depends on your definition of a town. Traditionally of course it was somewhere with a market which to the best of my knowlege it has never had. I would agree it is not a small village but with a population of less than 4,000 and without any large shops it isn't really a town. It doesn't have a large supermarket, any major chain stores or a secondary school. OK it has a bank but I wouldn't use that as a definition. When would you sy it stopped being a vilage? The bank has been there for decades (possibly a century!), similarly the churches and it had at least one school since the Victorian era as well. --NHSavage 10:36, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
- I have researched and thought about this some more. Firstly I have never heard of Parbold referred to as a town (and I lived there for 16 years, my parents still live there). Secondly, the wikipedia page on Town states: "In modern usage the term town is used either for old market towns, or for settlements which have a Town Council." Neithter is true of Parbold. I have therefore changed the page to reflect this. However as its population is bigger than that of Exeter in 1400 [1] I have changed it from small to large town. size is very relative!--NHSavage 21:02, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
Parbold is a Village and can not be considered a Town.
