Problems[edit]

At first sight there is no mention of population or area. This article should be at least three times the size considering the importance of the town. Vogensen 15:25, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think now the page is better. I thought the part of the university with its "republics" was especially interesting and unique. Vogensen 17:23, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Geographic Coordinates[edit]

On the article's heading, the coordinates 20°22′S 43°31′W are given for the city. Such place is off by 2.5 Km NNW to the "main street" of Ouro Preto (1.40 Km off to the West, 2.14 Km to the North). I know, because I was there.

The real coordinates of Ouro Preto are 20°23'08"S 43°30'13"W. However, when I try to correct this mistake, I find that it is utterly impossible to find the coodinates' numbers in the text.

Help! How can one edit Geographic Coordinates? (please?)

Ouro Preto as the most populous city of Latin America.[edit]

About this paragraph on the article: "The municipality became the most populous city of Latin America, counting on about 40,000 people in 1730 and, decades after, 80,000. At that time, the population of New York was less than half of that number of inhabitants and the population of São Paulo did not surpass 8,000."

The link to reference [5] for this claim is broken and based on this other article about Mexico city, the claim is probably wrong:

History of Mexico City - Wikipedia "There were estimates taken in the late seventeenth century, with the largest and most detailed census mandated by Viceroy Revillagigedo in 1790. In 1689, there was an estimate of 57,000 residents. An estimate for 1753 based on a partial census mandated by the Audiencia put the population at 70,000. In the period between 1689 and 1753, there were at least nine epidemics. The Revillagigedo census of 1790 counts 112,926 residents, a significant increase. ". Check references [61] to [65].

I think the original text should be changed to ""The municipality became one of the most populous cities of Latin America..." Edwinmhdz (talk) 17:03, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
