Editor with COI - should I refrain from edits?

[edit]

Since disclosing that I am an editor with COI - one of my professional responsibilities is to promote Nine Below Zero - I feel an apology is due. I am new to Wikipedia and was unaware of breaching this policy. I did not mean to flout any guidelines. I do not intend to bias this page in a promotional direction and I can promise all editors that my intentions are to be neutral. My changes were merely intended to bring the page up-to-date, as I had a degree of knowledge I wished to share about the band's activities in recent years. Should I refrain from making further edits? LukeEdwardsFC (talk) 20:30, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I start off by assuming good faith, as WP:AGF. Unfortunately, there have been a rash of recent edits to this article, most of which appear promotional, and/or try to remove Gerry McAvoy from the band's history.
The initial edits, by User:Mickeymodern, expanded on the involvement by Mickey Modern in the band, removing Gerry McAvoy from bandlist, photos and mention of his retirement. These were reverted. You, i.e, User:LukeEdwardsFC (who may be the same editor, I haven't asked for a usercheck) made a series of edits which were very promotional in tone and again tried to remove a picture of McAvoy. You then admitted "I work in music promotion for NIne Below Zero and Dennis Greaves has requested the image be removed"
Clearly this is a Conflict of interest, whilst what the current band want included is immaterial - this is not their site, and we do not re-write history.
At 20.30 last night you posted the above question - which was fair enough, Wikipedia is a complex place and the rules take a long time to learn. However, at 21.14, before you received any answer, you removed the picture yet again. I have reinstated the picture - and explained that it was taken in 2009, anyone reading the article should realise that McAvoy has since left the band.
The fact that McAvoy is no longer in the band is irrelevant to whether is picture should be included (look at the article on say Pink Floyd - the first picture includes both Barrett and Waters, both of whom left the band). McAvoy was a band member for what? about 20 years? and this repeated removal, appears to be a continuation of the previous attempts to write him out of the article.
You have added a lot of material, none of which has been supported by any references. Wikipedia requires information to be Verifiable in Reliable Sources, please provide references for the information you have added - referencing can be confusing - please see Referencing for beginners. You could also help the article by providing a (non-copyright) photo of the current band, which wuld put less emphasisi in the photo including McAvoy.
To answer your question above - although editing the article yourself is not prohibited, you must be extremely careful. The guidelines suggest that any edit likely to be controversial, such removing any material, particularly any critical material, should be proposed on this page, so the edits can be considered by unconnected editors, who will carry them out, provided they are a Neutral Point of View.
Removing the photo again, is likely to be considered vandalism, and the page may be locked preventing future edits.

I have, yet again, had to revert COI attempts to re-write history by removing material on McAvoy - such as the fact that he has subsequently had a solo career, and that he appears in one of the photos. Arjayay (talk) 19:52, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And, yet again, the picture including McAvoy has been removed - this is beginning to look familiar. Arjayay (talk) 18:37, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Who is "Arnold"?

[edit]

He is mentioned with no prior reference as "Arnold". The article assumes we know who this person is. I don't. 185.126.160.29 (talk) 12:27, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
