KCAHTA "California Road" Markers (NW Johnson County)

[edit]

During Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area skirmishes between Kansas and Missouri raiders, the jumping off points for emigrant wagon trains shifted north from Gardner, Kansas. They followed the Kaw River ridges westward from the Shawnee Methodist Mission which was the same route John Fremont used from Westport Landing to the Wakarusa Valley south of Lawrence, Kansas.

The Kansas City Area Historic Trails Association (KCAHTA) carefully marked this National Historic Trail branch as the "California Road."

>> Frémont first met frontiersman Kit Carson on a Missouri River steamboat in St. Louis during the summer of 1842. Frémont was preparing to lead his first expedition and was looking for a guide to take him to South Pass. Carson offered his services, as he had spent much time in the area. The five-month journey, made with 25 men, was a success.<< Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_C._Fremont#Third_expedition
