Macmillan Nurse

[edit]

We need to explain the term 'Macmillan nurse' since many people will have met one. My understanding is that they are found on the staff of the larger UK hospitals to provide support to patients and their relatives who are undergoing cancer treatment. However, it's my present understanding that some/many of these nurse-specialists are no longer funded by the Macmillan charity, but use the title to identify their support function. This page was basically an Ad. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.22.201.1 (talk) 07:06, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bob Linuxlad (talk) you suggest above that we need to explain the term 'Macmillan nurse'. A new section has been added below explaining the work that they do. Hope that covers it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Francesmawson (talkcontribs) 10:20, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Seems a shame we don't have a page on him, the founder of this great organisation. Any sources appreciated, as I'd love to create the article. Kingkong77 (talk) 20:18, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thnx. There's the Pimlico page, so this seems like a good place to start. I'll see if my library has this bio dictionary Kingkong77 (talk) 12:42, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changes

[edit]

This page was basically an Ad for this organisation - I have fixed that. ~DG. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.22.201.1 (talk) 07:07, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To me it still reads like gratuitous self promotion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.131.69.71 (talk) 19:52, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Macmillan nurses

[edit]

Macmillan nurses assess complex needs, give advice to other healthcare professionals and support people with cancer to understand their treatment options. They are trained in pain and symptom management, and psychological support. Macmillan nurses specialise in cancer types or treatments including chemotherapy, breast cancer, paediatric care and palliative care [1]. Macmillan lead nurses are senior nurse managers, helping shape the future of cancer and palliative care services in their area [2].

As of June 2013, there were 3,942 Macmillan nurse posts across the UK, both in hospitals and in the community[3]. Macmillan nurses must have five years’ experience, with two years of more spent in cancer or palliative support. Apart from the nurses working on the Macmillan Support Line, most Macmillan nurses are employed by other organisations, for example the NHS, and their posts are funded by Macmillan for a set time. The NHS, or other partner organisations, then take on the long-term funding although the nurse continues to be called a Macmillan Nurse. The nurse will still be supported by Macmillan including through provision of funds for their education and development. [4]

This is pure WP:COPYVIO! If rewritten, it needs more references and some trimming, but essentially worth adding. Johnbod (talk) 16:53, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Johnbod This has been rewritten, trimmed and now incorporates more links and citations.
Not done Nothing changed for now. Portions of this are still copy/pasted from the Macmillan site. Also citations from the organization which is the topic of the article are discouraged (though sometimes necessary). Any chance Macmillan nurses have been discussed in some independent source? Maybe a news article or academic article about UK health? Thank you for your contributions; I'm happy to discuss this further. Ajpolino (talk) 16:10, 20 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fundraising

[edit]

Fundraisers for Macmillan Cancer Support include World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, Brave the Shave and Go Sober for October. Macmillan were charity beneficiaries of the ITV Text Santa campaign in 2015 along with Save the Children and Make-a-wish Foundation.[3] 109.231.192.149 (talk) 15:13, 22 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Right to be forgotten?

[edit]

Is there a right to be forgotten for the section: Previous controversy over fundraising methods? (unsigned)

From 2018? No. Johnbod (talk) 16:15, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A further three years on, I think the answer should be Yes. Headhitter (talk) 10:26, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
