The language of this article sounded a little too ... I didn't know ... so I went looking, and, sure enough, the article is a verbatim copy and paste of the Mayor's official biography on the city website.

I had initially tagged the work for relying on one source, because I saw only the one link added at the bottom of the page. However, now that I have seen the source, something needs to be done a little more quickly. The City of Huntsville claims copyright to its website. http://www.hsvcity.com/ . Thus, the City Council would have had to have voted to authorize this copyrighted material to be used on Wikipedia, and if that has happened, please revert what I've done and put a reference to the authorization on Talk. To the contributor of this text (or whoever wants to revert it): please note the copyright is CITY property, not the mayor's. She can't authorize its use, and neither can her staff. It takes a City Council action.

What I have done is try to piece together a stub-quality article from a few sources I ginned together quickly. I know the net effect of this is to remove a lot of material that reflects positively on the Mayor, but copyright is copyright. I am all for having any of the material restored in a manner that does not violate copyright. Since I see where the contributor has a limited history of Wiki contributions, mostly adding this text, I will add a couple of quick pointers:

  • Obviously, you are going to have to take a few minutes to put anything from the Mayor’s website in your own words, to avoid copyright problems.
  • Everything you add to Wikipedia needs to be sourced, and preferably not from the Mayor's own sites. Please look at the Wikipedia policy on sources at WP:SOURCES - but just for a shortcut, I think anyone would be OK with an article from The Huntsville Times that sets out the fact you want to include. Just cite the article title, and the date and, if possible, the page.
  • Remember that Wikipedia wants the article as a whole to have a neutral point of view. WP:NPOV. This refers to tone as well as substance. "The Mayor helped bring the Acme factory to Huntsville" is OK. "The Mayor's brilliant leadership helped bring the Acme factory to Huntsville, securing jobs for voters who need to be grateful" is not. If you are a staff member or similarly close to the Mayor, you may want to look over Wikipedia’s policy on this at WP:AUTOBIO and WP:COI.
  • If you need a quick reference as to how to do all the links, formatting, etc. that an article needs, look at WP:CHEAT
