Ipswich serial murders

Is it a bit too soon to include these as 'unsolved murders', I would suggest a 1 year period. Otherwise any murder where there is an investigation would quality as an unsolved murder. 86.143.145.227 10:10, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Jenny Abbot

I cannot find any reference to this murder. Does anyone know anything about it. Phildav76 13:11, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

As per Phildav's searching, I am unable to find anything that references this name. And an ongoing unsolved murder/disappearance of a 15 year old girl would make headline news. I have therefore removed it from the list as on the balance of probabilities it likely listed by a hoaxer. If anybody is able to find references, please re-list it. Discussion about original content of the article

This list serves no useful purpose and indeed barely anything links here. Should be deleted. lmno 22:05, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

The list seems to be sourced from a very out of date list on this webpage: http://www.crimezzz.net/serialkillers/U/UK_CHILD_murders.php The dates seem to indicate it originally coming from the mid 1980s.

The following have been solved:

  • Marion Crofts, 14, murdered at Fleet, in Hampshire, on June 9, 1981. Tony Jasinskyj convicted of murder in 2002 using DNA evidence.
  • Jason Swift, 14, murdered in Hackney, East London, on July 11, 1983. Sidney Cooke, Leslie Bailey, Robert Oliver and Steven Barrell convicted of manslaughter.
  • Mark Tildesley, 7, vanished from Wokingham, Berkshire, on June 1, 1984. Leslie Bailey confessed in 1992.
  • Barry Lewis, 6, murdered in Walworth, South London, on September 15, 1984. Leslie Bailey confessed in 1992.
  • Lynda Mann, 15, killed in Narborough, Leicestershire, on November 21, 1983. Colin Pitchfork convicted in 1988. He was also convicted of murdering Dawn Ashworth. Notable as the first murders solved using DNA.

Still unsolved:

  • All of the Jack the Ripper murders (1888)
  • Mary Money, (1905)
  • Brighton trunk murders, (1934)
  • The Jack the Stripper or Hammersmith Nudes case (1964-1965)
  • Lesley Molseed, 11, disappeared in 1975 within a few minutes, from a country lane in Delamere Road, Rochdale, and her body was found three days later on open moorland above the A672 Oldham to Halifax Road in Ripponden, West Yorkshire. Stefan Kiszko was falsly convicted of this murder in 1976, but his innocence was proved in 1992.
  • Sean McGaun, 15, murdered on April 7, 1979
  • Martin Allen, 15, vanished from central London on November 5, 1979
  • Vishal Mehrota, 8, murdered in Putney, West London, on July 29, 1981
  • Imran Vohra, 9, killed the same afternoon at Preston, in Lancashire
  • Chris Laverack, 9, murdered in Hull on March 9, 1984
  • Lisa Hession 14, murdered in Leigh on December 8, 1984

Ones in which Robert Black is a potential suspect:

  • Christine Markham, 9, missing from Scunthorpe 1973
  • Genette Tate, 13, missing from Aylesbeare, in Devon, on August 19, 1978. CPS is deciding on whether to charge.
  • Suzanne Lawrence, missing in Essex, 1979
  • Colette Aram, 16, murdered at Keyworth, in Nottinghamshire, on October 30, 1983
  • Patsy Morris, 14, missing in 1990

In the current list, there are a number of instances where only very local geography is used, eg Gertrude O'Leary - Stokes Croft, Real Tessier, The Empire Hotel, St Thomas. The addition of a town or county would be helpful. With regard to the Eve Stratford case, the English is tortuous to say the least, and needs tidying up. (Grammatical/spelling errors marked with a §)

Both cases where§ featured on the BBC Crimewatch programme in the UK in September 2007, where DCI Andy Mortimer appeared said§ to presenter Fiona Bruce that both murders were definitely sexually motivated. The cold case was in 2007 opened on new§ to try to find the killer and investigators says§ that they are sure the§ both women where murdered by the same person. The investigators say that the breakthrough in the case was because of new DNA technology which proves the two murders were committed by the same person[28][29][30][31][32]. Richard Whelan

Does anyone know if Richard Whelan's murder is still unsolved? This case was criminally under-reported by the media, and I'm having some difficulty finding up-to-date information about it. Last I heard, a man had been charged with the crime, but that was over a year ago and I've seen nothing since. 217.155.20.163 18:37, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Whelan was stabbed to death on a bus, in front of many other passengers, on Holloway Road, Islington on 29 July 2005. Anthony Joseph was convicted of Whelan's manslaughter and sent to prison. I don't know whether or not he is still there. Jim Michael (talk) 17:36, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Jack the Stripper victims

In the years 1959- 1965, it is stated that the victim(s) were killed by Jack the Ripper. As the ripper killings were in the 1800s, I think as slight mistake has been made here.

A comprehensive list?

This list would be useful if it were more comprehensive. There are literally hundreds of unsolved UK murder cases out there. David Clifford Taylor 19:55, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

More than 1000 according to this article. Many won't be particularly notable, so I think it's best to concentrate on those covered in secondary sources (i.e. not just police reports but coverage in the news media) --Pontificalibus (talk) 16:15, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

I reverted this edit because it was in bold (which I could have fixed), there were problems with style, spacing, and punctuation (which I could have fixed), and it was in the wrong row (which I found too complicated to fix). Mary Lazenby

A murder of a Mary Lazenby in Bethnal Green was included. I could find no trace of sources to verify this, so I have removed it. melanie road 1984

Melanie Road 1984 - the way in which she was murdered has been taken from crime watch reconstuction (45) information has been recorded incorectly. It has been recorded as -

Melanie had been sexually assaulted, beaten and strangled to death. In 2009, Melanie's murder was reconstructed on BBC's Crimewatch, but no new leads to the killer's identidy came to light and the murder remains unsolved.[45] whereas the crimwatch article recorded her death as - After sexually assaulting her, Melanie's killer stabbed her several times and left her in the street. She died through blood loss.

List of unsolved murders in the United Kingdom: Difference between revisions

A few days ago, I noticed that I had inadvertently used "Although" at the beginning of two sentences, which is inelegant.

I therefore substituted the first "Although" with "Despite the fact."

Deleting this edit and placing a comma - instead of a semi-colon, as grammatically necessary - after "murder," removes the point of that sentence.

I would therefore be grateful if my original edit could be allowed to stand.

Accuracy

The article claims to be a list of "unsolved known murders"; in it I noticed the names of Patrick Warren and David Spencer, two boys who went missing in 1996. As far as I am aware - and the article notes this also - no bodies have ever been found. I'm not aware that this has ever changed from a missing persons inquiry to a murder inquiry. Now, I don't want to make light of their disappearance, but this is not an "unsolved known murder" (my emphasis). There may be other cases listed here that are also still officially missing persons inquiries, I haven't looked at them all. As a long-running case, the boys' disappearance may be notable; they were also (I think, would have to verify) the first to be featured on milk cartons in England. Elsie Frost

Damien Nettles

I'm really not sure he should be listed here (1996) as it's rather more an 'Unexplained' missing person case than murder. This is a young man who disappeared after a night out in his home town and many unsavoury theories persist, including accusations of murder against a known person. In fact there is no body/ remains and it is theoretically possible he is still alive, although this is very unlikely. Hubert Chevis

Hubert Chevis (1931) should be removed from this list. The coronial court returned an "open verdict" on Chevis's death. Legally, if Chevis had been murdered the coroner would have stated so in his verdict. "Open verdict" by legal definition means that the court was unable to determine whether he had died by accident/misfortune, murder, manslaughter, or suicide. In legal terms his death was a "suspicious death".

Genette Tate

Surely Genette Tate's listing should be ported over to List of people who disappeared mysteriously as there has been no body and no conviction? I propose to delete this listing do this if there are no sensible objections as her disappearance is already listed on the relevant page for disappearances? The listing on this page states thusly:

13-year-old Genette Tate went missing at 3.35pm BST on 19 August 1978 while delivering newspapers. Her bicycle and sack containing the newspapers were found lying in the middle of the road, on a quiet country lane but her body has never been found and her abductor has never been brought to justice. --The joy of all things (talk) 13:56, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Interesting point. A body is not required to prove a murder, however, and a dead person cannot be convicted: Genette Tate murder file against Robert Black submitted to CPS. I think it would be a good idea for us to check whether the CPS have made any further statements. Keri (talk) 14:08, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
