What is the difference between cities and towns in France??? olivier 11:01, Feb 26, 2004 (UTC)

I really wonder what the author of this page meant by distinguishing cities or towns ? It's totally meaningless... Phido

I propose to replace this list with Category:Cities, towns and villages of France, unless anyone has any objections. -- ChrisO 15:53, 11 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to make "Cities, towns and villages" a subcategory of the category "France?" Like so: Category:France:Cities, towns and villages Kevyn 21:09, 11 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Possibly, but it's a bit late in the day for that... however, it's possible to achieve the same thing by adding Category:France to Category:Cities, towns and villages of France. A bit unorthodox perhaps, but the programmers seem to have anticipated it, fortunately. :-) -- ChrisO 21:40, 11 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Are cities and towns outside of Metropolitan France included on this list? Thank you. — Instantnood 09:12 Mar 1 2005 (UTC)

I actually do not find this list to be very helpful for several reasons. There seems to be no overriding criterion for inclusion on this list; many very small towns are included, whereas many much larger cities are excluded. Furthermore, someone searching for the name of a city gets no approximate location since its department or region are not given. It would probably be more efficient to delete this page altogether and replace it with the List of cities in France over 20,000 population (1999 census), which is a comprehensive listing of all French communes over 20,000 population (and excludes all those smaller), and gives their location both by department and region (including overseas departments as well). I agree that the current page is useless. olivier 12:42, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree too. What would be most helpful would be a list of cities by decreasing order of population. That would also serve to focus our efforts slightly when choosing which articles to work on. Much better to work on a page of a city with 100,000 inhabitants than one with 100! Do we have such a list anywhere?
If we do that, then for the "exhaustive" list of communes, the existing lists of communes in each département should suffice. Stevage 12:58, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, perfect: fr:Grandes villes de France. Stevage 13:00, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
