Links

Basically all station codes linked on this page (ABE, ABN and so on) are false links leading to TLAs, and should be delinked. — Itai (f&t) 13:58, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

Explanation

This list appears to be highly out of date, having some former stations and lacking some current stations. I will edit it with a current Amtrak timetable.--Railsmart 19:00, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Merger and table

Confusing station identification & listing of services

It seems like there is a range of treatment to stations served only by Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach or other contract bus services. Some are listed as Amtrak stations, while other bus stops are hosted by a business and are listed that way--"so and so mini-mart" or "such and such gas station". Still others are listed as "bus shelter" or "Greyhound lines" or "transit center bus stop", etc.

It seems to me the primary distinction is whether an Amtrak station is served by bus only, train only, or bus and train. The linked article can clarify the nature of the Amtrak service.

Also, I wonder in a list like this if its wise to list all the named Amtrak trains that serve the station, when the linked articles will do that. Should Chicago Union Station have a list of all the Amtrak lines that serve the station or shouldn't that be left to the article to carry that water--which it does in the station infobox. What do the users/editors of this article think? --Ltvine 04:25, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Ideally many of the details of this article should be included in the respective station articles rather than in this list. However, that will remain an "ideal" until all the article pages are updated. Also, many former stations do not have, and may never have, an article in which to include such details. In addition, most Thruway Motorcoach stops will never have articles either. Hopefully, the color coding has helped differentiate the between the stations/stops.

Use sortable table?

Would it be wise to redo this list as a sortable table, with columns for City, State, Station Link and name, Code, and notes? This would also supercede List of Amtrak station codes. It would be a nontrivially difficult undertaking, so I'd like to gauge support before launching ahead. Thoughts? —CComMack (tc) 02:28, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Such an undertaking would make this list more useful, but I'm still unconvinced that need it at all. We've got Category:Amtrak stations broken down into states, and we've got more-or-less complete listings on individual lines. Do we need this, either for our own benefit or for readers? For the readers: sometimes a flat list is better than categories. For us, categories don't include redlinks. I thhink a list is still useful. —CComMack (tc) 22:34, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

I've started the process of converting this list to a table, along the lines outlined above. I've added a "Ridership" column, using the FY 2006 data form the Amtrak Fact Sheets. And I'm noting, as I proceed backwards through the alphabet, which entries no longer appear in the latest Amtrak National Timetable. Presumably these entries will get shoveled off to the list of defunct stations section when I'm done with the main section.

Also, I've not been linking Thruway Motorcoach stops which lack articles; I don't know what the current consensus is on these, but I doubt the articles would survive if created. If someone disagrees with me, they should feel free to add the red links. —CComMack (tc) 21:32, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Unless there exists a specific reason other than it is a Thruway Motorcoach stop, most such stops should not ever have their own articles. For example, a stop at the local gas station (which is very subject to changing locations, the stop, not the gas station) should not ever have an article, but an article may be appropriate for a stop at a city's intermodal center or at a current or former train station. In those instances, the article would be about the intermodal center or station, with a side note that it is serviced by Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach.An Errant Knight (talk) 04:48, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Regional Rail Stations as Former Amtrak Stations

Some of the stations here, like the New Jersey Transit stations along the Atlantic City Line are former Amtrak stations, but I wonder about a lot of the others listed, like Rialto, California, which has a Metrolink station on the San Bernardino Line. That, and various Caltrans and North County Transit District, Metra, MARC, Virginia Railway Express and others. ----DanTD (talk) 21:57, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Okay, now I have more reasons to doubt the accuracy of this list. This link not only has a code for Rialto Metrolink station, but for West Corona, which is another SoCal Metrolink station. It makes me wonder if some of the stations listed were ever Amtrak stations at all. ----DanTD (talk) 15:25, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
Much of the confusion arises because Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach stops have a station code assigned--even though they may never have had any train service. In the cases mentioned, they may have had rail service, but not Amtrak train service. An ongoing review of Amtrak's timetables will continue to provide better clarification.An Errant Knight (talk) 04:55, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Updating Flag Stops

Page length

At the time of writing, this page is 574,949 bytes; that is far too long. What's the best way to split it? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:28, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

  • The services/train column should go too; there's no need to repeat that information here. There are also a number of duplicate entries; someone added things like "Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe—Norman" under A as a duplicate for "Norman." What a mess. Mackensen (talk) 14:53, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

For actually splitting the article, there are a couple possibilities. One would be to keep all current stations here and a create List of former Amtrak stations. Another might be to split off the bus stops, though such an article probably can't free stand because almost none of them are notable. I think we need to focus on paring down this list and making it sane before splitting the article. Mackensen (talk) 15:00, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Additional space could be saved by compressing City and State/Province into just City, moving that into the first column, and explicitly organizing alphabetizing by location. Wikipedia isn't a travel guide; we don't need "see also" entries for station names (many of which are notional). Mackensen (talk) 15:20, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

I've removed the owner, service, and notes columns. Unsurprisingly the page is now under 200K. Additional copyediting will bring that down further. Mackensen (talk) 19:38, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
