Pronunciation

Launceston _is_ pronounced lawn-ston, after living in the town for many years, i'm quite sure it is correct, although I admit many do pronounce it 'lawn-son' Benbread 19:40, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I too am from near Launceston. Pronouncing it with the 't' is as incorrect as pronouncing Greenwich as 'Green Witch' or Worcester as 'Worse ester'. It is indeed the pronunciation used by many outsiders, but it is also just plain wrong. I've amended the article to reflect the common pronunciation as against the Cornish pronunciation. -- Necrothesp 19:52, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I have IPA-ified the pronunciation. --Angr/tɔk mi 28 June 2005 06:32 (UTC)

I'm from Cornwall and I have many friends from school that live in Launceston, but come to our school in Camelford. The correct pronounciation by many cornish natives is "Lan-son", however most people from up country call it Lawn-son. Peterwill 13:05, 2 Aug 2006 (UTC)

In launceston, there is a variety of ways of pronounciation, as stated. Lawn-ston, lawn-son, lan-son and laan-son are all commonly used and are all widely recognised as possible pronounciations. Some residents even simply say lawn-sess-ton, although this is very unusual and not really adknowledged. Lawn-ston and lan-son are the popular pronunciations and it simply depends on which you prefer. I believe that officially it is lawn-ston, but traditionally, it is lan-son. Robinrocks 13:23, 21 Sep 2006 (UTC)

Well, I have always know it as Lan-son, and all my family are cornish. The only people i know that pronounce is lawn-son are people that have moved down here from upcountry. The only reason some may say it Lawn-sess-ton is because that is how you pronounce the place Launceston in Tasmania, unless wishing to use their abbreviation: Lonny, or Launny as the abbreviation is usually written. Tasmania is an island State of Australia. The earlier style of pronounciation comes from the name Stefanson, which wouldn't be pronounced Steff-awn-son, would it? it would be Staff-Ann-Son. Go to Launceston Castle. It has it all there. Peterwill 20:22, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Grew up in Bude (which I pronounce b-you-d and never bewd). However Launceston I pronounce Lawn-ston if I'm not speaking with an accent and Lanson if I'm feeling local ;o).
Also I'm sure I've seen it spelt Lanson in local press occasionally. --82.110.109.210 13:27, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Grew up in Cornwall (Treknow, then St Austell), Laan-son was the preferred pronunciation, especially among native Cornish people. I'm 75 per cent sure that old police traffic cones, predating the merger of Cornwall and Devon constabularies, had 'Lanson' written/printed on them. DuncanHill 13:32, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps even a redirect from Lanson would be useful. Another fault in this article is the block of restaurants/takeaways: a link to a commerical WS would serve better and someone with local knowledge could write up the economic activity (e.g. newspaper, market, industrial estates, etc.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Felix Folio Secundus (talkcontribs) 08:14, 10 February 2009

It is a "one horse town" but unfortunately the horse died many years ago. The residents are a fairly miserable bunch, consequently the town enjoys little or no social ammenities.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.100.250.218 (talk) 16:59, 16 August 2008

Well, whichever way it's pronounced, the first sentence in the lead has become overlong and very convoluted. So I'll re-structure the lead dreckly to clarify and simplify – but not alter – the information. This will also bring it in line with the other WP:Cornwall places articles.
FWIW I pronounce Launceston with a round 'a' and no 't' ... nearest spelling would be Laan'sn or Larn'sn which is how I hear it pronounced by Cornish people. However, when I'm up country I tend to go with the non-Cornish pronunciation which is generally Lawnstun. (It's a bit like Redruth I suppose – to most of England it's 'Red Ruth' but in Cornwall it's r'Druth.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andy F (talkcontribs) 07:11, 15 April 2010

I grew up in Tavistock, across the Tamar in Devon, in the 1960s. People there called it "Lawnst'n". But we knew that its inhabitants called it "Laans'n". Maproom (talk) 14:06, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Transport

I note this section tells you about a train station which is no longer open, but neglects to mention where the nearest station actually is located. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.18.108.100 (talk) 16:27, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Distance from the border

I live in Launceston and can tell you that the town is only half a mile from the ford over the Tamar the old crossing into Cornwall. However approaching the town from Holsworthy the town is about 2 miles from the river. Please correct the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.12.116.198 (talk) 16:19, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Economy

The detailed list of businesses is probably inappropriate in an encyclopedia.----Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 14:14, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Pictures of the town

These would be worth adding to the article which is mostly text at present.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 10:35, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Railways / clean-up

I have expanded and clarified the material about railways. I've also tagged the article for cleanup as I think it needs a bit of trimming in places, copy-editing, and the sections need re-ordering into a more logical hierarchy. Andy F (talk) 08:21, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

St Mary Magdalene's church

A picture of the church would be really useful but Commons does not have one.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 06:56, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Wiki Cornwall ratings

A puzzle to me is some of the ratings. If my home town of Penzance is rated as of High-importance how is Launceston only rated of Mid-importance. Launceston had a mint, Norman castle and town walls, was the county town with courts, prisons, etc. a Parliamentary Borough, the guardian of one of the two main routes into Cornwall with consequently one of the oldest bridges over the border. Bodmin is also of Mid-importance yet Newquay and St Ives are of Top-importance. Before the artists arrived the only thing notable about St Ives was the pilchard! Jowaninpensans (talk) 19:48, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Ah, now that's got to do with the priority assessment guideline of WP:Cornwall. I've continued my reply on your talk page. Cheers, Zangar (talk) 22:54, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Dunheved

Does anyone have a citation for the use of the name "Dunheved"? Howard Alexander (talk) 22:15, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

I have just found Dunheued in a Domesday Book transcript. Is there a citation for the mint in St Stephen or Dunheued? Is theer any reference to the Dunheved name before 1086? (In the Old English language it would be Dunheafod.)

Is 'Dunheved' really a *Saxon* name? Saxon occupation of Cornwall was minimal, and the name sounds fairly clearly Cornish/British, not Saxon. OK the period before 1066 is often referred to as the Saxon period, but it seems inappropriate to use that terminology in Cornwall. Not many OE speakers around in Launceston in the eleventh century! 82.71.104.222 (talk) 09:00, 28 July 2013 (UTC) bunn

Coat of arms

The coat of arms is referred to in the section Launceston, Cornwall#Civil War, but there is no image to it. Perhaps a reference could be included. —Mcstove (talk) 10:30, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
