SHAW.—John Luis Shaw, born In Central City, Colo., Sept. 5, 1870,* died at Loma Linda, Calif., July 22, 1952. His parents were Seventh-day Advent- ists when he was born, and he was baptized at the age of 14. He entered Battle Creek College when 16 years of age, graduating from its scientific course in 1893. After graduation he was called to Union College, Nebraska, as dean of men. and teacher. Before beginning work at Union College he was married to Bessie L. Owen in 1893, who died in 1939. He later taught in Claremont Union College, South Africa. Returning to the States for a General Con- ference session in 1901, he wa_s ordained to the gospel ministry by Elders Daniells, Prescott, and Spicer and asked to go to India. Here Bessie and Horace were born to Elder and Mrs. Shaw. He was editor of the Oriental Watchman in Bombay, and in charge of the field of India from 1901 to 1912. Elder Shaw was in poor health during much of his 12 years' service in India because of the heat and stress of the work in that rapidly developing field. On his return to America he served as principal of the Washington Foreign Missionary Seminary, and from there came into the General Conference in educational work and later as one of the Mission Board secretaries. In 1922 he was elected treasurer of the General Conference, in which capacity he served until 1936. During the years of his retirement his health continued to decline, and he and Mrs. Shaw took up their residence in California to be near their children. Elder Shaw served for a time as chairman of the board of the College of Medical Evangelists during this residency. From 1938 until his death, Elder Shaw was a patient in Loma Linda Sanitarium. He is survived by his daughter, Bessie Ramabai, wife of Dr. Everett Stone, of Riverside, California; his son, Horace John Shaw, professor of speech and homiletics at Emmanuel Missionary Col- lege; two grandchildren; his sister, Mrs. Emma Eames; and his brother, Horace G. Shaw.

Karmatar School (India)

Our school was opened at Karmatar, March 5. We decided to start a school if ten pupils could be found. The number was found, and we now have a school of twenty, including teachers.

Karmatar is a beautiful, quiet place one hundied and sixty-eight miles from Cal- cutta, and a more desirable location for a school would be hard to find. The campus on which the building stands, is well supplied with different kinds of fruit trees; sucli as. lemon, orange, leechee, and mango. The fruit of the mango is very delicious, and is said to be the king of fmits in India. The school is composed entirely of board- ing students, nearly all of whom are Euro- peans or Eurasians. With the limited amount of room, it is well filled. It will not be possible to take in more pupils until the facilities are increased.

Sr. Thekla Black has charge of the school, and Sisters Orr and O'Connor are the teachers. We are very sorry that Sister Orr's time is taken up in school work, as she was sent to this field to work for native women ; but our teachers are so few that we have to do this until a school teacher is sent to this part of the Orient. We hope we shall not be kept waiting long.

The opportunities for educational work among the natives, are abundant. The peo- ple are fond of learning, and many of them have very bright minds. In memorizing, they surpass Europeans or Americans. They are also very clever in mathematics. The most popular series of arithmetics used in English schools was compiled by a na- tive.

The people in this country are sadly in need of practical education. All the schools, with few exceptions, teach theory only. Among the thousands of pupils that take their degrees, there are many who know nothing outside of books. Because of their impractical education, many walk the streets to find employment, and have to resort to the work of servants to gain a livelihood.

We hope to connect some industries with our school, ,so that useful labor may be taught as a fundamental branch of educa- tion.
