[edit]What was his middle name? I see sources saying "Augustus"; here it's listed as "August". Wondering, -- Infrogmation 19:14, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Why was the Brooklyn Bridge removed from the article? That article states that he was involved; if he was, it's a well-known bridge that should be mentioned here. If he wasn't, someone needs to update the Brooklyn Bridge article. Lord Bodak 19:39, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
Re: Infrogmation's question on the middle name-- I get 8600 hits on "John Augustus Roebling" and 675 hits on "John August Roebling". It is possible he used both forms. I am inclined to change the article name to the Augustus form, due to the prevalence-- also, Britanica uses Augustus. Any arguments against the move? -- Mwanner 21:32, August 16, 2005 (UTC)
- In German, his name is Johann August Röbling, which is probably the source of the confusion. We should move it, but note that his birth name was Johann Röbling. --Jpbrenna 21:53, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
How many (corresponding) hits with just John Roebling?? What if he never used his full middle name in American only used the initial (as is actually the habt in US). In that case, the heading apparently should not contain the focus of the quarrel: it should be John A. Roebling. Remember the WP rule: the name version the person was best known as. His memorials & foundation certainly speak for the heading John A Roebling. 217.140.193.123 19:41, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
- I like that solution, although "John A" gets slightly fewer than "John Augustus" (7210 v. 8560). Plain "John Roebling" gets 8890. With a redirect from other variants to the article name, I don't much care whether it's John Roebling or John A. The problem with "John August" is that it's just wrong (well, basically, in English). The advantage to "John A" is that we can do it ourselves, 'cause "John A" is presently just a redirect. "John Roebling" has a two line edit history, so we'd have to go through Requested Moves.
- I had submitted a move request to "John Augustus Roebling", which I have now cancelled. If anyone feels strongly that the article should be "John Roebling" instead of "John A. Roebling", I'll submit a new request. Otherwise, I will do the move to "John A". Mwanner 21:25, August 26, 2005 (UTC)
- OK, going once, going twice,... tomorrow I'm moving it to John A. Roebling. Mwanner 02:20, August 31, 2005 (UTC)
- For what it is worth, the historian/curator of the D & H Canal Museum calls the man "John Augustus Roebling". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2jrvyY2hsM Since the engineer is a German immigrant, has nobody searched passenger manifests for the man's entry? The departure manifests, in German, would have his name listed in the way that a German would. An image of his entry line from the manifest would be a nice adjunct to this article.
- Röbling arrived too early to be included in the "Germans to America Passenger Data File, 1850 - 1897" found on the National Archives site. I also tried the Castle Point database, but the search function is not working for me today - only data garble is returned. Somebody with a membership to Ancestry.com can easily do this search for you. I do not currently have a membership. Yours, Wordreader (talk) 21:50, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- LATER THAT SAME DAY: This Röbling biography says "The August Eduard [a passenger ship] docked at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 3, 1831." Therefore, Röbling would not be included in the Castle Point database. https://www.immigrantentrepreneurship.org/entries/john-augustus-roebling/#_edn10 Ah, well, Wordreader (talk) 22:37, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
Wire rope
[edit]He didn't "invent" wire rope - see that article.
Vandalism
[edit]Someone vandalized part of a sentence under "Legacy", I have backtracked through older versions and it is in every version. What is this? Does someone know the correct information to revert this?
- I fixed it. Someone copied a chunk of the earlier text along with a piece of nonsense. --Tysto 18:27, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Date of birth
[edit]Seen on his grave at Find-A-Grave, it says 1800. Lincher 21:54, 22 March 2006 (UTC
That is a goof by someone named Parsons. If you look at the stone it says 1806. JaxmrcleanJaxmrclean (talk) 22:38, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
Oil paintings
[edit]Doses anyone know of any oil paints from the 1800 that were painted by John Roebling or by J. Roeblings Wife? I have one dated 1851 signed J.Roebling The oil is of a young boy 2-5 yaers of age. I think it may be of Charles Roebling. Charles was born 1849 and the painting is dated 1851. If any one can help me with my search it would be helpfull. "Honors" section
[edit]I think the "honors" section isn't written in proper english. Not being a native speaker myself I wouldn't like to change it. But I think that someone who knows english better than I should take a look at it. 91.50.46.24 (talk) 18:52, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
- Done You were correct, and I've fixed it. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 18:59, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
New Source
[edit]The German Historical Institute in Washington, DC has published a short biographical article on John A. Roebling that can be found here: http://www.immigrantentrepreneurship.org/entry.php?rec=37 Immigrantentrep (talk) 15:53, 30 May 2013 (UTC) In my opinion this source document, written by Frank Caso, is unreliable. Change.
[edit]Under Honors, I found "In the sixth-season Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode "The Tattler," it's revealed that Jake and Gina attended John Roebling High School." I moved this line to the In Popular Culture section. Thank you, Wordreader (talk) 19:49, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
