Help reference this page[edit]

Robert J. Suker has obviously added a lot of family history to this page and although I have taken away the reference request due to filling in a number of unreferenced items with credible references it still needs a lot of work. Should I add the reference request back up or is there enough information to leave it off? Macr237 02:36, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Message to Robert James Suker[edit]

Robert if you are going to edit this page you need to cite references. For example the names and dates of his children were obviously sourced somewhere, cite that reference. Otherwise all your work will get deleted. Help us make a better article, register yourself, so we can talk to you and reference your work, please. -- Macr237 05:14, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added details of James Hannell's children from records of the NSW Births Deaths and Marriages registry. I have also tried to eliminate, what I understand by 'Weasel Words'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.237.43.108 (talk) 12:40, 18 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing[edit]

I am registered with Wikipedia.

I have limited ability on a computer, though I am learning slowly. I do not know exactly how to reference my sources, in a way acceptable to you, however, I am open to education. Most of the information I have submitted is from Family archives. I have many newspaper clippings and factual accounts in a box. Some reference material is available in a couple of very badly written history books. I also have a copy of my cousin's Thesis for her work in Genealogy, though her main work doesn't concern James Hannell.

Please help me to honour this man and his brothers' contributions to Newcastle. I understand why there are so many blanks in Wikipedia now that I have tried to supply information. One needs a degree from Oxford, I suppose? Bob.

Referencing is pretty simple. Just take a look at references at the bottom of your page. Also have a read of this article on Citation. I am not sure about how you reference personal archives (hopefully someone will come along and help), but newspaper articles are fairly simple. Take a read of Citation Templates, especially the ones for newspapers. Here is an example:

{{Citation | last=Cowdery | first=Oliver | author-link=Oliver Cowdery | title=Letter VIII | newspaper=[[Latter Day Sa… | volume=2 | issue=1 | pages=195–202 | year=1835 | date=October 1835 | url=http://www.centerp… }}

Which looks like this:

Cowdery, Oliver (October 1835), "Letter VIII", Latter Day Saints' Messenger and Advocate, vol. 2, no. 1, pp. 195–202{{citation}}: CS1 maint: date and year (link)

I hope this helps. Macr237 (talk) 01:48, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopaedic[edit]

You may have noticed I made some significant changes, to make the James Hannell page more encyclopaedic. I recognise that the original creators wrote this page because they want to share information about their ancestors - so here is the link to the previous version which will always be in existence if you want to refer to it as a family member: [[1]] You can also add things on this Talk page when you have fuzzy ideas about Hannell but can't accurately prove/cite it, and other's who are interested can engage here and may find more tangible information that can then go on the main published page. On the Talk page you can talk as casually as you like without a need to be encyclopaedic - you can even use weasel words here :) There is still some stuff in the main article I didn't quite understand, and some that doesn't have proper citations. Some old citations have broken because the webpage they used to link to has changed. So it still needs some work. Powertothepeople (talk) 15:37, 18 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
