Splendid article

Congratulations to everyone involved in this. It was a real pleasure to see something so informative and well-put together on the main page, instead of the usual rubbish about computer games or sportsmen or pop culture figures. I enjoyed reading it very much and it has spurred me on to find out more about such Antarctic expeditions. World War I

The United Kingdom declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914 and the expedition left Plymouth 4 days later. I know little about conscription in WW1, but was there a reason why the crew weren't recalled for war duty at a later date when conscription was implemented? Was it because they were too hard to contact? Or did the government see national morale boosting value in the continuance of their expedition? Conscription wasn't implemented in the Empire immediately upon declaring war for the simple reason that no-one knew how long or how serious the fighting would be. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.150.10.189 (talk) 10:13, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Re: Personnel - Hypothetical "Men Wanted" advertisement

I saw this image of the hypothetical advertisement in an unrelated story on Ars Technica. While it could be a fake, it doesn't have the air of a fake. The URL implies it's something to do with the Smithsonian (magazine), which is a source I would tend to treat as reliable, barring any contra-indications. A question for font experts: Is the font used in the clipping any use in narrowing down candidate newspapers?. Philh-591 (talk) 20:48, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

If anyone is in a position to look up a Smithsonian Magazine archive in a library, the URL also implies a date of 9 Oct 2013 or 10 Sept 2013 for an article about Shackleton, depending on whether the hinted at date is in US American order or not. Philh-591 (talk) 20:59, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

Sorry for wasting your time. The Smithsonian Magazine article turns out to be an article scotching the idea that there was an advertisement, with this image as an illustration and notes that exhaustive newspaper archive searches have turned up nothing. Also I notice that the image uses the American spelling of "honor", which I suppose is a hint that it's not for real. Philh-591 (talk) 21:09, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
