Bungie mention

Call me a rabid fanatic (Businessweek once did, to my great satisfaction) but shouldn't Bungie Studios at least be mentioned somewhere in this article!? Sippan 20:31, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

Absolutely. And as a note to passers-by, the Halo movie is actually in production, so the VfD notice is sort of old'd. For now, this project is 100% confirmed and is being made, and is technically no longer speculation (again, assuming the project doesn't suddently disappear for some reason, which is why the page can't be finalized yet). Special Effects

Whats with the special effects?I think they will do that duplicating thingamabob like LOTR.Probably using it on the Flood and Covenant.--40k carnage 22:14, 12 July 2006 (UTC)40k carnage

Director

Has George Lucas has even been rumoured to direct the Halo movie? Thanks, Steph 20 February 2005

No. [gspawn is logged out]
From what I have heard, the posting on IMDb a while ago that Uwe Boll was to be the director was actually a joke. If this is true, it might be worth mentioning in the article. (67.175.99.33 22:31, 4 June 2006 (UTC))

Ive heard Peter Jackson is the executive producer,though i can't say about the director.I'll take a wild guess, hmmmmmm,Steven Speilberg?--40k carnage 22:07, 12 July 2006 (UTC)40k carnage

Steven Speilberg is doing Interstellar, so he would not have time.

Location

There is a rumor that halo is going to be made in NZ, is it true? cause then I could get a part as a grunt!!!!!!!--210.55.84.99 23:55, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

  • I was just about to ask-why on EARTH did they assume New Zealand? Just because LOTR was filmed there does not mean Halo will be. And, I think they've already chosen the parts. But, if anyone knows why New Zealand was assumed as the filming location, please tell me. I thought that it might be computer-rendered location or a giant studio set out like good ol' Blood Gulch. Taylor 10:39, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
    • Peter Jackson and WETA are basically located in, prefer to run out of, and generally operae in New Zealand whenever they can. Plus, as LOTR demonstrated, NZ has a lot of locales perfect for epic works. Works for me. [gspawn is logged out]

I sure hope that it will be mainly CG like Final Fantasy Advent Children.

Actor

Kevin Allsworth was leaked a few months back as the lead role of Master Chief in the Halo film. A recent website has arose on Bungie message boards that either sheds some light on the name or is a very elaborate hoax. http://www.angelfire.com/indie/oracle1

Alex Proyas

Two points for the first person to find a post a link to a confirm/deny article regarding Proyas' involvement. Gspawn 13:50, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Promotional photograph

I do not think that the promotional photograph that has been edited into this article is official. It may be, but no source is provided. From what I can see, it seems to be a man posing in Nightmare Armor; they are well-known for replicating the MJOLNIR armor worn by the Spartans, including the Master Chief. I felt this needed to be pointed out, as it is not sourced and, as I said, appears to be a photograph of a man posing in Nightmare Armor. –Wlmaltby3 07:32, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

I've removed the image. --Coredesat 22:08, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
I assumed it was a confirmed sighting of one of the deliverypersons involved with the script. If anyone could find one of those, it would be a great early addition until official promo material hits the internet. gspawn 20:27, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Speculation

With a movie that will require a lot of CGI, as well as post production time, I doubt it will be released as early as "mid-2007" and I also doubt with the special effects required that the $75 million budget will be sufficient. Just my take. What about you guys?

Shouldn't have been allowed

While I'm a fan of the Halo series, I beleive a movie should never be made about Halo. At the most a TV series. While I don't strongly detest a movie, I beleive that the people can't be trusted with a storyline as fragile as Halo. I couldn't even trust myself. Its just something that is to hard to put to screen, and the likely hood of stuffing the movie up, like cutting bits of the story out, its to greater risk I beleive. So no to a Halo movie I say.

From what I've heard, I believe that Bungie has complete control over what happens in the movie. So if thats true, the movie might actually be true to the series. (The first paragraph under development suggests that Bungie has control, although it does not have a source.) ArgentiumOutlaw 20:38, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Who knows, it may be made into a trilogy. As mentioned above, cutting out parts of the story may prove detrimental to the storyline. Halo shouldn't be made into another mindless action film with CG.

Id like it better if it was a movie set in the Halo universe, rather than retelling a story. More than likely people will be annoyed by something that got removed/added, so if its a new story than there is much less to compare it to.

Release date

Because the article already states that the release date is unlikely, shouldn't the Release date in the sidebar be changed to 'TBA'? Opinions? Natas347 01:27, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Absolutely, and done. Although it's fairly certain it won't happen in 2007, there's no evidence at all to preclude 2009, therefore until there's at least some tiny bit of info on a potential window, default to TBA. Gspawn 22:12, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

It's funny that people have ignored this decision and slated it for a 2008 release on other parts of the page. I see no problem with leaving a 2007 release date, things could be going perfectly according to schedule for all we know... But anyway, if somebody wants to remove the dates in the article, I'm just pointing out that it conflicts with what's been decided upon here.--Roaddoggfl 01:34, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Threw another edit in there. Noting what other sources list as the release date as has already been done works fine. If people want to know what IMDb says, they can go to IMDb. But unless they can cite a source for the change, why should this article follow suit?--Roaddoggfl 23:10, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Denzel Washington

According to a report on Ain't It Cool News, in their AICN-Down Under section, Denzel Washington was visit WETA studios for some special effects help for his next directorial feature (The Great Debaters), and isn't necessarily confirmed to be starring in Halo.

I saw on "Attack of the Show!" yesterday that Denzel Washington was "confirmed" to be playing as Master Chief in the movie, and was wondering whether their confirmation was true.

As per the post, Denzel IS NOT STARRING in whatever role he's talking to Jackson about- he's directing. I have no clue at all where people made the jump to starring, but as you can see above, he is in fact DIRECTING whatever he's meeting Jackson about (if it's not 'Debaters'). And as far as I've seen, all reliable sources that actually "broke" this story unanimously called him director. Accusations that he was starring only began moving after. This whole section of the article therefore needs a rewrite- unless someone can find a "real" news story that said he was acting, and not directing... I'm chalking it up to overzealous fans. And yes, Master Chief is caucasian anyway, etc etc. So there's plenty of anectodal evidence to back this up as well. Gspawn 12:54, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
COuldnt he be playing the role of Sgt Johnson?

I don't know if it's true or not, but I certainly hope that Denzel Washington gets to play Master Chief. I don't care whether Master Chief is originally caucasian in the Halo novels. I just want Denzel Washington to play Master Chief, because he is an amazing seasoned actor, and that it would be very interesting to see something new in Hollywood for a change, instead of having the usual White protagonist save humanity so to speak. I'm always an advocate for racial diversity in the media, and if this movie casts Denzel as its leading protagonist, then I'm certainly going to look forward to it, as with many other non-white people who have been waiting for so long for things to change. Justin Alvarez Jr. 11:17, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

While Denzel is an excellent actor, it is my firm belief that, once Hellboy II is completed, Guillermo del Toro should direct and Ron Perlman should star as the Master Chief. del Toro is a superb director and did a wonderful job on the first Hellboy, while Perlman has been described over the years as playing some of the best "lovable thugs" in movies. He's also a great actor and, judging from most of his movies, has exactly the right demeanour to play someone like the MC. -Captain JD Sparrow

This is a forum for discussing how to improve the film article, not to share your opinions on how the film should be made. Please don't stray from the talk page's purpose. --Erik 15:14, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Removed an addition saying Denzel could play Sarge. As the section now says, the original story was that he was meeting due to a project he was directing. THEN fan sites tried to say he was playing Chief. And yes, chronologically, THEN sites started saying he was probably playing Sarge instead. After that failed, people broke down to claiming he was merely hired on as a producer or a writer. Should we add those too? Answer: No. 172.131.19.227 22:21, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

D. B. Weiss

Text currently in the article:

"The script for the movie was to be written by Alex Garland(1), but it was dumped, and writer D.B. Weiss, writer of Lucky Wander Boy is set to write a new one."

While the joblo.com[1] article implies that Garland's script was dumped, the article it was reporting on at gamesetwatch.com[2] leads me to believe otherwise:

"He's currently living in Los Angeles, where he is writing the latest version of the screenplay for the Peter Jackson executive produced movie Halo, based on Bungie's best-selling game franchise (following on from an initial draft by Alex Garland)"

Sounds to me like he's building on Garland's work, shouldn't that reflect in the article, rather than take the word of an article likely written after an unsubstantiated assumption?--RoadDoggFL 06:53, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

He's building on the Garland script. Joblo.com is wrong, and wouldn't known, since they didn't actually speak to Weiss personally. The text has been changed to reflect the truth of the situation. -al 15:51, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Just a note, IGN has reported the same incorrect information based on unsubstantiated assumptions from the GameSetWatch interview. Simply a reminder, two wrong articles don't make a fact.--RoadDoggFL 22:03, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Good old IGN! No, RoadDogg, you've picked out the right meaning of the interview. Weiss was a little vague, but that's what he meant. -al 13:52, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Updatetacular

I made a few changes, summarized here. First, I fixed the Denzel bit, because again, I saw the first media for this hit the net, and it all said director, and then fansites shouted back actor for some reason. If I'm wrong, clue me in, but again I think it's probably just overzealous fans. Second, I updated the plot summary. I tried to make a "movie site" description covering the general gist of the story, as there's really no reason to think the final script would cover only the events of Halo:Combat Evolved, especially with a rewrite in the works. Elsely, I mostly scrubbed IMDb stuff. In case anyone's missing it, IMDb has basically been 100% wrong with ALL their updates on the flick, and I cut out any additional discussion of previous IMDb points because there really doesn't need to be any more talk- they were wrong. End'd. Gspawn 13:39, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Shooting in early 07?

"Jackson said Halo was likely to start shooting early next year – and it was possible Halo and Dambusters could be shot about the same time." You can read the entire interview at www.stuff.co.nz

US Bias

I added the globalize tag because saying that it is due out "Summer 2008" is biased to the Nothern Hemisphere. Please say something like first quarter, or an expected month because seasons are not the same everywhere. 203.109.245.204 10:36, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

(categorized this section) Couldn't you have just updated the page instead of adding a bias tag? It would have taken considerably less time and effort to change "Summer" to "Q1" than it did to put the tag on. And being as Bungie is an American company, it's not exactly bias to say Summer- that's how the news will be coming out from them- it's just forgetting to generalize seasons. 172.150.178.34 13:48, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Er, I quess it would be Q2? I always thought "second quarter" was weird, so I changed the bit to "mid-2008". I'm still not a big fan of that wording, but the bias tag is gone anyway. 172.150.178.34 13:54, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Suggestions for improving the article

I'd like to see this article revised to be more encyclopedic in nature. I've worked on improving other articles about upcoming films, and this particular article could use some improvement. Below are my suggestions for improving the article, if anyone wants to help me shape it up.

  • Trim down opening paragraph and move extraneous information (such as script rewriting) to the Development section.
  • Index references in article by using Wikipedia:Footnotes and Cite news/Cite web templates (see Spider-Man 3 or The Dark Knight for how this is implemented).
  • Break down the Development section into specific subsections, such as Screenplay, Direction, and Casting.
  • Remove IMDb references and related information; IMDb does not meet WP:V, being user-edited (and not verifiable).
  • Purge Plot section unless citation can be provided that the story will be just like the video game series or the books; otherwise, there are individual Halo articles that a reader can read about the series in general.
  • Remove weasel words and/or unverifiable information from the article, such as:
    • "...the film will more than likely receive a PG-13 or R rating."
    • "The film is also unconventional in that Bungie Studios, the original developer of the game, retains significant creative control over the content of the film through Microsoft."
    • "These conditions meant that many of the major film studios weren't interested in the project despite the success of the video game."
    • "On September 21, IMDb removed the statement after creating controversy with die hard fans of the game series."
    • "In mid-December of 2005, perhaps in reaction to a update on Bungie.net..."
    • "Proyas has previously directed a few critically acclaimed movies including The Crow, Dark City, and I, Robot."
    • Remove whole following paragraph due to unverifiability: "As of May 6, 2006, the Halo movie title on IMDb was changed from The Fall of Reach to just Halo. Whether or not the title change was official or not is currently not known. In April 2006, IMDb listed Kevin Allsworth as a rumored choice for the lead role of Master Chief. Allsworth is not known to have any previous experience in the film industry. Lack of any information about him led many fans to believe that he is only a made-up person. In June 2006, IMDb also changed the release date to 2008, but as with other IMDb updates, there is no corresponding information to justify the change."
    • "Although it is possible that Washington's meeting could have been over directing the Halo movie, this is also unlikely, as Washington is already involved in some upcoming features, including The Great Debaters."
  • Please cite other information in the article that appears valid, but needs to be verifiable by other editors. I will review the article and insert citation-needed tags where necessary.
  • Information in "External links" can be disseminated to be part of the article's references and Footnotes section.
  • Clean up Infobox Film template (the only TBA that needs to exist is for the release date).

This article has potential to be well-written and well-cited. The information just needs to be re-worked and validated. Don't be afraid to be active about trimming or adding content in the article. Your help would be greatly appreciated. --Erik 09:20, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Do you ever wonder why

game-to-film adaptions are usually crap? Well, to me it's because these movies are made by directors, who change the plot, characters and pratically everything, for some reason. But worst of all, some of the ideas, are given to rookie directors. I think this movie should BE directed by Peter Jackson.

Pece Kocovski 11:58, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Please don't use this talk page as your podium. Wikipedia is not a soapbox. --Erik 12:23, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
It depends on the game/movie. Sometimes the directors just feel the need to rape the game's story, even if there's nothing wrong with it, for some stupid reason. For example, Doom sucked because it got it's soul ripped and they replaced it with moronic characters, bad lines, and a grand total of three types of monsters (one of which made just one appearence at the end, and the other one, the imp, didn't have any of the fireball throwing powers).

But usually it's done to a game that just shouldn't have a movie. For example, Mario Bros., the various fighting games, etc. have virtually no plot to them, the game is based solely on gameplay, not plot. To make a movie off something with no plot is just retarded. So, naturally the movie sucks.

film tied with upcoming untitled game?

is it possible that the film is directly associated with the upcoming untitled Halo game that Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh announced that they would be involved in? 69.119.252.174 05:53, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Hugh Jackman, Jude Law

I noticed that both of these actors were listed as performing in this film in the info box. As I personally have not seen any casting announced for the film, nor have I seen any after a search, I deleted the mention of the two actors from the box. If anyone knows otherwise and has sources, please feel free to correct my, uh, correction. --JerryLewisOverdrive 01:05, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

The Movie SHOULD Be Made!

(Eulric 23:15, 3 May 2007 (UTC)EulricEulric 23:15, 3 May 2007 (UTC))People say the movie will make The Halo Video Games look like a joke well they have made many movies off games that were popular like Doom. I know Peter Jackson is helping make the movie and his movie The Lord Of The Rings The Return Of The King did the best at the Academy Awards in history! Besides the game was based on the books if people said we should not have made a game when they were making it and stopped because they thought it would make the books look like a joke we would not have the greatest xbox and xbox 360 game ever made would we.
