Conformation Photograph
[edit]This page needs a picture of the conformation of this breed that goes above the characteristics/nicknames/origin box. (71.171.173.170 (talk) 18:16, 4 May 2008 (UTC))
- When there is a good one, we shall add it. Montanabw(talk) 04:14, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Seeing as i live Nearby a Hackney Pony breeder i'll work on getting a good pic for the breed artical Firesongponies (talk) 08:58, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
- We actually have some decent photos here, I didn't realize that the tag was still on. But improvements are always welcome, and I fear that those images of Free Willy look awfully professional and thus may have copyright issues down the road... Montanabw(talk) 04:38, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- The reason the tag was still there was that while we have lots of action photos of Hackneys being driven, we have no still shots at all, let alone any good ones. I've readded the tag with a more specific rationale. Dana boomer (talk) 04:53, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- OK, that works. I just am leery of having 16 blurry photos of grazing ponies uploaded! LOL! Montanabw(talk) 04:58, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, but we've got over 50 breed articles with this tag on them, and no-one seems to be in a big hurry to upload pictures of any of the breeds, so I don't think it's more of a danger to articles with the tag as to those without. It's a pretty obscure tag anyway, I think. If bad photos are uploaded we either delete them (bad copyright) or don't use them... Dana boomer (talk) 05:04, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

- Makes sense. But where is that list? I can never find it, it's not in the wikiproject cleanup page...? Montanabw(talk) 05:48, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
- All pages tagged with the template go into Category:Wikipedia requested breed photographs, but this also includes dog and cat articles. I go through it every once in a while to see if there are any that can be removed because of pictures that I or someone else put in the article. Dana boomer (talk) 13:40, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
Cobtail pony info, side-view photo(s)?
[edit]It might be a good idea to have a side-view photo up showing the tail & other differences between Hackney & Cobtail Hackney ponies... Same for information on the tail docking: which form is used (cutting hair or flesh/bone), how it came about/history, and any controversy over whichever form is or has been used. (Mentioning just what I wondered while reading that part of the article.) —Xyzzy☥Avatar (talk) 06:47, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- See tail (horse) and docking (animal) for info on the tail issue. Have seen no photos of Cobtail Hackneys, and it seems we are talking a style issue, not a separate breed. Montanabw(talk) 20:26, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

- The animal type is usually not included with a breed name (British Spotted, etc.), except when necessary as a bracketed parenthetical disambiguator (Siamese (cat)). An exception is when the formal breed name always includes type, for clarity reasons. In this case, the Hackney Pony is always called such, to distinguish it from its parent breed, the Hackney Horse. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ɖ⊝כ⊙þ Contrib. 10:00, 2 January 2013 (UTC) — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ɖ⊝כ⊙þ Contrib. 10:00, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
- PLEASE OH GOD NO NO NO! OPPOSE! OPPOSE! OPPOSE! OPPOSE! WikiProject Equine (WPEQ) has a longstanding consensus on the article naming conventions. We have several HUNDRED horse breed articles and this "to capitalize or not to capitalize" issue comes up over and over and over again. It has gone back and forth for years and never have all the articles been properly renamed when someone comes along and wants to change it again! First off, many breeds have the name "pony" added, some with caps, some without, and the Hackney horse is not its "parent breed" (at least, quite indirectly). If you do this, it will affect many of the 350-400 horse breed articles tracked by WPEQ and we have had a stable (pardon the horse pun) consensus on these for at least a couple of years. The consensus is that we use the (parentheses) disambiguator only for named horses (i.e. Secretariat (horse) and then we add "horse" or "pony" without title caps and without disambiguation parentheses to those breeds where the name alone either normally includes the word "horse" or "pony" (i.e. Hackney pony) or where the distinction is needed to prevent confusion with dabs (e.g. Shetland, New Forest, Dartmoor, Eriskay, etc...) We used to capitalize the word "horse" or "pony" if it was part of the registry name, but the caps police said we couldn't do that, so the current consensus is to only capitalize when it would be absolutely idiotic to not include the word "horse" or "pony" in the name (i.e. American Quarter Horse, which no one calls a "quarter" -- but people do call a Shetland pony just a "Shetland".) This is a HUGE question that creates too much drama every time it arises and if it MUST be raised needs to be run past WikiProject Equine and not piecemeal across multiple articles. Please, please, please, withdraw this here. I'm begging you! Montanabw(talk) 23:08, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose—I don't think breed names should be capitalized; they don't seem to be capitalized all that consistently in generalist sources, and Wikipedia usually doesn't capitalize such things. Also per Montanabw if " pony" isn't part of the "official" name of the breed then I think we certainly don't want to capitalize it, although glancing at some books it doesn't seem so clear that " pony" isn't part of the official breed name. (eg: The Official Horse Breeds Standards Book (Lynghaug, 2009) includes "pony" in the bolded title.) ErikHaugen (talk | contribs) 08:14, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
- Well, it's a part of the breed name for most pony breeds, but the MOSCAPS fight keeps going back and forth on this endlessly, so basically unless someone wants to request moves on every article with "pony" in it (I think at least 100 -- we have 300-400 horse breed articles) we just do our damnedst to stay with whatever the title cops want this week, sentence case or title case, except for the few articles where the result is ludicrous (American Quarter Horse, for example, is never an "American Quarter" - LOL) and as for the rest, that's a bigger caps war that we just want to stay out of. So many horse breeds are named after geographic locations that most will be in caps for that reason anyway. Not a fight I want to touch with a 10-foot pole, I saw it played out on the dog breeds page. Montanabw(talk) 22:41, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
