Flor's Nationality

[edit]

Just an explanation about why I changed it from "Livonian": Although Flor would no doubt have considered himself a Livonian first, Germans and Italians from a few centuries ago would likewise have considered themselves Bavarians, Prussians, Neapolitans, Sicilians, etc.- Italy and Germany didn't exist as countries. If we go by what was correct for people's times, we'll end up just muddling things for people who don't know the history (should we refer to Americans from colonial times as "English" or "British"?).

I ended up putting a bit of explanatory stuff in there, because Flor was ethnically German, but was born in Latvia, spent his career in Estonia, and would have considered himself a Livonian. I don't now of any concise way of avoiding all confusion, but this was my best shot. Chuck Entz (talk) 22:27, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
