Youngest officer
[edit]Removed this part about the 1916 Rising - "the youngest officer to serve there". O'Sullivan was not the youngest officer, Seán McLoughlin was. Conghaileach (talk) 11:15, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- I put this back. Gearoid was the youngest officer. I will source all of this. It's stated in numerous newspaper articles, books, etc. Also, it's family lore. User:Jonihnj--Joni Scanlon (great cousin of G. O'Sullivan) 02:57, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- Family lore is all very well but it is not acceptable on Wikipedia. Can you provide a source from one of these numerous newspaper articles, books, etc. Snappy (talk) 09:03, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Seán McLoughlin was born in 1895 which would clearly make him the youngest officer to serve in the GPO, which he attended after the fall of his original base, he was also promoted to the same rank as James Connolly during his time in the GPO and so was also the highest ranking officer to survive the rising (higher in rank than de Valera) but of course, his rank was covered up in the immediate aftermath of the risng in order to save his life. I think that this should be amended to remove the claim as Seán McLoughlin can verifiably be shown to have been in the GPO, was clearly an officer when he arrived there and was promoted to the highest rank in the insurgent army while there. it was he who organised the evacuation of the GPO. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.0.4.122 (talk) 12:52, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
Sources
[edit]I probably have not sourced this correctly. The main sources I've used are newspaper obituaries published in the Irish Independent in 1948 and the book by Gabriel Doherty: Michael Collins and a Making of a New Irish State (1998 edition), which contained a chapter written by Gearoid's son, Fr. Gearoid O'Sullivan, Jr. Jonihnj (talk) 11:46, 8 October 2010 (UTC) User:Jonihnj
