What about the early records of Funkadelic in the 70ies. That was real funk rock. --194.114.62.69 10:18, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Funk rock = Jimi Hendrix , Funkadelic etc and has NOTHING to do with hiphop, hip hop stole everything from funk anyway.

Jimi Hendrix is Psychedelic Rock and Funkadelic is Funk/Soul, or even Psychedelic Soul. Learn your artists. BreakerLOLZ 05:14, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

kind of bogus[edit]

Funk is by definition influenced by funk-rock. This genre is bogus.--Urthogie 16:16, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What's Bogus is your knowledge..... Funk Rock is a Hybrid of Funk & Rock. The "Hybrid" can't influence one of the "Proponents", so that viewpoint makes no sense at all.Raresoul 10:44, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The genre may be bogus, but if the term is in use (which incoming links suggest it is), we can't delete the article just because we think the term shouldn't exist. We can't delete things because we disagree with them. NickelShoe (Talk) 17:18, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Then why not move it to wiktionary, if its merely a misinformed phrase?--Urthogie 20:20, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Is it about the phrase? It's about the genre. So, no, it makes no sense to move to Wiktionary. I could think that "hard rock" is a bogus term, that rock is by definition "hard". But that doesn't mean the article should be deleted. The term is already being used to describe something, and the article isn't about the term itself, it's about what it is used to describe. NickelShoe (Talk) 20:24, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Genres are not predestined slots in which to place certain types of music. Genres are created when new sounds arrive on the scene and the need for a different way of categorization is called for (within the main culture of that type of music). I think, personally, that the lines between funk-rock and funk-metal will forever be blurred due to the simple fact that a lot of the groups involved in this subgenre play both sides of the rock/metal fence. And, since 'rock' is the umbrella under which all of the included subspecies exist, it just seems like it might make more since to redirect the 'funk-metal' page to 'funk-rock', thereby keeping the link open and including all the groups on a single page; still allowing the possibility for further explanation and/or division on the single (funk-rock) page.--Chridall 11:11, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merging Funk-Metal with Funk-Rock is not right.[edit]

It's not very logical if you think about it. Rock and Metal are two different genres and to merge them is like merging hip hop with stoner music, it just isn't going to happen. Rock uses less guitar distortion than metal does and the Funk Metal bands I've herd are a lot heavier than the rock ones. xXSouthern SlayerXx 15:14, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The thing is, funk rock isn't even a genre. It's a mistaken phrase. Funk from the beginning was just Rock with soul and disco influences.--Urthogie 15:47, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Merging the so-called "funk metal" into this article does not merge rock with metal. Funk metal is filled with rock bands that carry few to none elements of metal. Prolog 14:25, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow. You are waaaaayyy off! The Funk style originated in the mid- to late-1960s when African American performers blended soul music, soul jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, new form of music, which pre-dated disco by at least 10 years! And Rock wasn't even an element of this new sound, which by the way was invented by James Brown ( "Poppa's got a Brand New Bag" is the first known Funk Record). And Disco had nothing to do with Real R&B or Funk. That was Generic MUZAK put out by Producers at Major Labels trying to cash in on the New York Discoteque underground Fad of the late 70's/ early 80's( which is a pre-cursor to House Music & some Electronica beats)..and shows like American Bandstand made that mess popular.( and killed a few R&B artists careers in the process)

Study the music & get to know the Genre; Know your musical History!Raresoul 10:37, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the bands mentioned on funk metal aren't even metal at all. E.g. Living Colour, RHCP, 24-7 Spyz, Extreme , Faith No More. Besides that both articles are merely stubs and FM is hardly worked on since its inception. Better try and make one proper article instead. The list should probably be moved away to a list of funk rock bands Spearhead 16:13, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think actually if we actually had to merge something, we should merge Funk-Metal with Funk-Rock, not the other way around. What Prolog said, is totally opposite of common belief. Metal definately isn't a separate genre from Rock. If music is more heavy in one certain genre, wouldn't that make it more part of that genre. --Iluvmesodou 08:44, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Funk is not Rock, Rock is not Metal[edit]

I would say that both Funk and Metal are sub-genres of Rock, and that Funk-Rock and Metal-rock are valid, but seperate things. Then there is also a hybrid Funk-Metal, which is neither Funk or Metal, but maybe a footnote on both. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Stuston (talkcontribs) .

Funk rock is a genre as of itself when the "rock" on-beat is combined with percussive "funk" off-beats, often provided by single, plucked guitar strings. I know because I was playing it in 1972/3 luther [1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by Robert Luther-Smith (talkcontribs)

Quote: "I would say that both Funk and Metal are sub-genres of Rock.."

Wrong. Totally wrong. Metal? Yeah, but not Funk. Nope. You're way off.

Funk is an amalgam of Soul, Gospel & R&B elements, where Rhythm & Grooves which emphasize the Bass & drums are prominent. Introducing a distorted Rock Guitar element into the mix creates a Hybrid now known as Funk-Rock, Pioneered by Hendrix & surfaced in some of the musical works of Sly Stone, Parliment-Funkadelic, the Stones, Bowie, EWF, Rare Earth, Santana, War, Stanley Clarke, Xavion, Prince, Praxis, the Police, Maroon 5, Chili Peppers, Rage against the Machine, Ohio Players, Mother's Finest, etc...too many to list!! Now see, All of the groups I named here have put out songs that exemplify the genre, even though that style is not what they're primarily known for... But a quite few "signed" bands do the Funk Rock thing exclusively. Funk Rock is a Legitimate Sub-cat in it's own right & has been around a lot longer than "Funk-Metal". Consistency[edit]

This article calls the genre both "funk rock" and "funk-rock". The article should be consistent in the use of one or the other. Also, is it normal to capitalize the names of musical genres? That seems somewhat odd to me. LowKarmaError 00:56, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Funk is not Rock[edit]

"Funk is an American musical style that originated in the mid- to late-1960s when African American performers blended soul music, soul jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony, and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. Unlike R&B and soul songs, which had many chord changes, funk songs are often based on an extended vamp on a single chord."

Hmmm, no suggestion of Funk being a sub-genre of rock. Read the Wiki articles kiddies. Now make a real Funk Rock article. BreakerLOLZ 05:12, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article should be improved or merged with funk-metal and funk-core, because it seems to be abandoned and it is unsourced and uninformative.Kgppra17 08:43, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Funk Rock is a Legit Sub-genre[edit]

Funk Metal? Never heard of it. But funk rock? Early examples of this musical blend started with Hendrix & then later some of Sly & the Family Stone's music, Graham Central Station, of course Funkadelic & Mother's Finest first albums...The Isley Brothers ( check out "The Heat is On & 3+3" LP's ), David Bowie ( "Fame" ) & the Stones ( "Miss You" & "Hot Stuff") all had heavy doses of both Funk & Rock vibes. The 80's blurred the line even further with groups like Sly Fox ( "Let's go All the Way"), Xavion ( "Eat your Heart out" ) & the musical experiments of Prince, The Time, Jesse Johnson, & even the Police's "Voices inside my Head", with that Heavy beat & groovin' Bass line...straight Funk right there!! And it's still around today-Know your Music. To say this genre is Bogus or should be Merged with some new Upstart classification like Funk Metal is akin to dismissing Hendrix as mere "Electric Blues"; it just ain't right! Know the music before you pass judgement.Raresoul 07:32, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merge[edit]

I merged funkcore and funk metal into this article. Prepare to be Mezmerized! :D 01:23, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
