MTA Edits

My Plan For our environment and society wikipedia page project, I plan to edit and make multiple additions to the "environmental migrants" wikipedia page. In doing so, I will focus on presenting more information regarding the true definition of "environmental migrants." In doing so, it is my intention to provide the reader with a working definition of "environmental migrants." I plan to present some further predictions made about "environmental migrants." Additionally, I plan to provide the reader with more resources in conducting further research. Furthermore, I hope to tighten up the article and make it an easier and more informative read for the learner. Lastly, I will conduct more research on popular culture surrounding "environmental migrants" in hopes of finding more modern forms.

The following are multiple sources I choose to reference in conducting my wikipedia page edit (these could be subject to change):

Edits Implemented In concluding our environmental and society wikipedia project it is my objective to briefly describe my implemented edits on the "environmental migrant" page. In beginning my edits, felt the history of the concept of “environmental migrants” was not extensive enough. I added a working definition provided by the “International Organization for Migration.” I offered more predictions and attempts to enumerate “environmental migrants/refugees” section. Especially, in regards to Myer’s work, I preformed an extensive amount of research on Myer and his findings regarding Environmental Migrants and added these findings to the page. I also provided multiple new sources that provide further predictions about environmental migrants. Additionally, I provided further information to the “Environmental Migration in Asia & the Pacific and Areas of Risk” section. In adding more information to this section it made it much more coherent and informative for the reader. Furthermore, I made multiple additions to the popular culture section. In referencing the short documentary film “Sun Come Up.” Also, I preformed further edits especially in regards to grammatical errors and also ridded of information that I felt was unnecessary for the reader, as, I feel it is essential that a Wikipedia page be clear, concise, informative and accessible to the general public. Lastly, I added a multitude of new credible references for the reader to perform further research.

Severe problems with recently added paragraph

I agree that this article needs cleanup. However a paragraph added today by 59.154.17.6 seems to make things worse, not better.

The paragraph reads:

Evidence of increased extreme weather events has however been disputed by actual data, showing that the planet is in fact experiencing the lowest level of hurricane activity in 30 years [1]. In addition, an NOAA study has confirmed that any increase measured in activity may actually be due to increased detection ability, showing no increase in damaging hurricane or tornado activity, but detecting more lower level storm activity [2][3].

The references are:

Note that the reference to "actual data" is linked to a blog. Reference 3 is also a blog. Blogs are not, by-and-large, reliable sources.

But the main problem here is that the change in climate is misrepresented as a prediction of serious tropical storms such as hurricanes. That is a gross oversimplification.

There is also a problem with interpretation of sources. Note that reference 2 says:

The team also noted that the finding of no increasing trend in hurricane and tropical storm counts in the Atlantic is consistent with several recent global warming simulations from high-resolution global climate model and regional downscaling models.
"This new study is one piece of the puzzle of how climate may influence hurricanes. Although Atlantic storm counts overall have not changed, this study does not address how the strength and number of the strongest hurricanes have changed or may change due to global warming," noted Knutson.

So according to the sole reliable source the new findings are consistent with current predictions of climate change. The only source cited is being misinterpreted so as to say the exact opposite about climate change of the paragraph it is supposed to support. --TS 15:33, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
