[edit]Hi. I'm new to Wikipedia and would like to know if I could use this website http://www.solar-geysers-cape-town.co.za/ as a reference. Please can someone give me some advice. Thanks Julian — Preceding unsigned comment added by Julianventer47 (talk • contribs) 13:52, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
How about progress? What progress has been made toward completion of this project? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.2.115.228 (talk)
- A lot of hot air. They didn't get a federal government grant, so their AGM included a lot of bluster about how this was better for the project as it removed the constraint of having to fit the terms of the grant.[1] --Scott Davis Talk 22:24, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
- There was never any possibility of completion of the original Solar Tower Buronga project. Some (not all) of the concepts contradicted the laws of thermodynamics. The main data is from a project (in Spain) several orders of magnitude smaller, which was claimed as a success despite being destroyed by a thunderstorm. The dates and scale of the project have been continually revised to be later and smaller. Andrewa 03:58, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
See also Talk:Solar Tower Buronga and if really interested, the page history has some fascinating claims, most if not all of them from the various versions of the EnviroMission website - which of course is not versioned so we can't now verify this. But try this one. (;-> There was also a claim that the temperature differential could be used to drive air-conditioning and thus increase the available electrical power by gathering more heat... we had a little discussion about what the Carnot cycle says about this, which I can't find just now. The latest news at http://www.enviromission.com.au/news/news.htm is now over a year old (6 December 2005). The cracks are appearing. Andrewa 02:03, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- There are December 2006 Company announcements on their website, so they're still updating it. I don't recall the air conditioning claim, but a lot of the Carnot cycle discussion is at Talk:Solar updraft tower/Archive 2#Carnot engine. It's also mentioned in Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2006-07-12 Solar Updraft Tower which never really got finished - we all just got bored and went somewhere else. --Scott Davis Talk 12:19, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
That's one way of putting it. I had already put too much time into it, and there was more important stuff going on that required my attention. Now it appears that things have moved on, EnviroMission lost out on a $A75 million ($US57 million) Australian federal government grant to Solar Systems, a competing Melbourne solar power company. Perhaps what should be done is reduced that Solar updraft tower dinosaur article to no more than one paragraph, saying that the project is going nowhere. JdH 18:08, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
- True, they are updating parts of the site. I suppose it's not the only website to have some neglected pages... Andrewa 09:46, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
- It's not like they've actually done much in the last year to announce. --Scott Davis Talk 12:41, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Energy from hot air?
[edit]None of these sustainable energy projects make much economic sense while cheap oil is still a stone's throw away. That may not be the reality, but it's certainly the perception for many. Not everyone is convinced that cheap oil won't return. Too much uncertainty with the future is probably the reason we don't see things like this taking off right away. As of July 2014 Enviromission is still ongoing in their attempts to commercialise the Solar Updraft Tower idea and have sold the rights to build towers to a Texan group and and are in ongoing discussions with a Middle Eastern investor and likewise in India. After the SCPPA solar tower was aborted (although it may be re-started in some form to the best of my knowledge) I think there was a shift away from owning and operating a tower towards licensing the idea to other developers in return for a share in the equity of each project. Enviromission is listed on the Australian stock market (EVM) and also on the OTC (Pink Sheets) market in the US as EVOMY — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.237.25.181 (talk) 23:23, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
