Ormond or Ormonde

[edit]

In their articles on Archibald Douglas, 1st Earl of Ormond Vian in the DNB spells the title Earl of Ormonde. Lee in the DNBIE and Paton in the much more recent ODNB, spell the name Earl of Ormond.

As that was just one article I searched the online edition of the ODNB and a search on Earl of Ormonde returned no entries while a search on ODNB returned thirteen results:

  • Boleyn, Thomas, earl of Wiltshire and earl of Ormond (1476/7–1539), courtier and nobleman
  • Butler, James, first earl of Ormond (c.1305–1338), magnate
  • Butler, James, second earl of Ormond (1331–1382), magnate and justiciar of Ireland
  • Butler, James, third earl of Ormond (c.1360–1405), magnate and justiciar of Ireland
  • Butler, James, fourth earl of Ormond [called White Earl] (1390–1452), magnate and administrator
  • Butler, James, first earl of Wiltshire and fifth earl of Ormond (1420–1461), magnate
  • Butler [Bocach], James, ninth earl of Ormond and second earl of Ossory (b. in or after 1496, d. 1546), nobleman
  • Butler, James, first duke of Ormond (1610–1688), lord lieutenant of Ireland Click here to see image
  • Butler, John, sixth earl of Ormond (d. 1476/7), magnate
  • Butler, Piers [called Red Piers], first earl of Ossory and eighth earl of Ormond (b. in or after 1467, d. 1539), magnate and lord deputy of Ireland
  • Butler, Thomas, tenth earl of Ormond and third earl of Ossory (1531–1614), nobleman Click here to see image
  • Butler, Walter [called Ualtéir na bPaidrín, Walter of the Beads and Rosary], eleventh earl of Ormond and fourth earl of Ossory (1559–1633), nobleman
  • Douglas, Archibald, styled earl of Angus and Ormond (c.1609–1655), nobleman

So as the older DNB has been superseded by the ODNB, I am moving this article to the spelling used by the ODNB --PBS (talk) 17:01, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
