Last Will and Testament of Doris Duke

[edit]

We wish to advise everyone that we (the Living Trust Network) have a copy of Doris Duke's Last Will and Testament posted on our website, which we believe is of interest to anyone seeking information about the life of Doris Duke. We have also discussed our desire to post a link to Doris Duke's Last Will and Testament with Wikipedia administrators [See User talk:Livingtrust], either under "references" or "external links." Last Will and Testament of Doris Duke. Wikipedia does not object to the link but has requested that we not put the link up ourselves since we are a commercial website. Instead, it has requested that we make it known that the Last Will and Testament is available, and anyone who wishes to add the link to the "reference" section or the "external links" section may do so. So, we solicite your help in adding the link set forth above. Thanks. Livingtrust 03:47, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

money she left

[edit]

The articlesays she left $1.3 to Issac Newton. Well, is that 1.3 million or billion? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.103.82.207 (talk) 14:11, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is one of those facts that either needs a reference or needs to be deleted. I looked up the will on the site listed under external links and could find no mention of any Newton, let alone Isaac. It is such an outrageous claim that is seems unfair to leave it there without some verification.Like2fly (talk) 23:25, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Putting on the Ritz

[edit]

I notice that one of the sections in this article is named "Putting on the Ritz". What is the meaning of that as the title of a section in this article?? 165.189.169.190 (talk) 20:47, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Remove un-sourced POV text

[edit]

I removed the following text which was un-sourced and appeared to be POV. If proper sources can be found it can be edited and re-inserted into the article.

  • Every day, she received stacks of letters from people asking for money. She and Barbara Hutton were known as "Poor Little Rich Girls."Doris was driven daily to a private school in a chauffeured limousine, and the maids who cared for her maintained photograph books of all her clothing so as to plan her wardrobe. She had private security guards to protect her from being kidnapped. She also spent time at her family's Rough Point mansion, a former Vanderbilt summer mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, where many of America's wealthiest families summered. Her debutante party was held at Rough Point. Doris and Nanaline Duke never got along.--Kbobchat 03:24, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

more text removed from article:

  • drove to the house where Tirella got out of the rental vehicle to open up the large cast-iron gate at the end of the driveway. At that point, Duke "accidentally" gunned the car, striking Tirella; then throwing the station wagon in reverse, she dragged his body, snagged by the front fender’s bumper, across the street, ramming him again, dazed and slummed over, against a tree. "Uncontrollably", the auto struck Tirella several more times in quick succession, leaving his mandible as a separate piece, recovered among the bloody debris by the local police- who, as a testament to “a certain efficient nature”, succeeded in their sweeping clean the scene of the event within hours. Within 72 hours even the somewhat mangled lip of that section of the cast-iron gate, which had been entirely unhinged and whisked away on a flatbed truck, had been removed, repaired, and re-installed, as if nothing had happened. Meanwhile, the local police department was unable to retain knowledge of the whereabouts of any crime or accident, and all evidence had been removed from Rough Point's entrance.[1]

Why does the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation link (in this article), redirect to the same article? Either there shouldn't be a link in this article, or there should be a separate article on the Charitable Foundation. recursive linking probably isn't the right thing here... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.179.123.10 (talk) 16:48, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pics?

Can't we have a close-up pic of her? There must be plenty that are public domain. 109.154.27.194 (talk) 13:14, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Accusations of murder

[edit]

The article makes no mention of the accusations, rejected, that she was murdered: http://articles.latimes.com/1996-07-25/local/me-27885_1_doris-duke

Net worth

[edit]

The Net worth section has this complex, ambiguous sentence that needs clarification:

Nanaline was a shrewd business woman, often compared to the "Witch of Wall Street" Hetty Green, and when she died in 1962, she left her daughter, then estimated to be worth $250 million, a fortune tripled what J. B. had left her.

Does the phrase "then estimated to be worth $250 million" refer to "her daughter" or to "a fortune"? Even when that is clarified by re-writing the sentence--preferably splitting it into two sentences--we still have a problem, as follows.

If $250 million refers to "a fortune", and if that's triple "what J. B. had left her", then "what J. B. had left her" would have been about $80 million or so. OK, that's in the stated range of his estate's value. But, he left that estate to both Doris and Nanaline. So, in the phrase "what J. B. had left her" does "her" refer to Doris, or to Nanaline--and how do we know how much went to that person?
If $250 million refers to "her daughter", then that number is mostly irrelevant to the amounts of Nanaline's and J. B.'s estates.

While we're looking at this section, what is the justification for using the abbreviation "J. B."? Presumably, it refers to James Buchanan Duke, but it seems too casual for an encyclopedia article. There is no foundation for that abbreviation in either this article or James' article; and the latter attributes a different nickname to him.

Another phrase that draws my attention is "What many forget to include in Duke's holding was her priceless collection of artwork". Whose opinion is that? It strains credibility to think that anyone with any business estimating the estate's value would overlook such obvious assets.

Eduardo Tirella

[edit]

This deserves a section of its own (and not in "early life"; she was in her 50s at the time). What's in the Vanity Fair article is barely summarized by what we have here. I will attend to this. Daniel Case (talk) 04:32, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
